09/25/11 Orthopaedic foundation to honor Martha Stewart

PRESS RELEASE FROM: The Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles

Greenwich, CT - The Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles (OFALS) seventh anniversary gala fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at The Harvard Club of New York City. The celebratory evening will honor Martha Stewart, who will receive the Leadership Award for Non-Profit Philanthropy, Russell Warren, MD, who will receive the Excellence in Sports Medicine Award, and John M. Bader, who will receive the Award for Embodying the Spirit of an Active Lifestyle. The menu will feature Celebrity Chef Michael Mina with wine pairing chosen by a world-famous sommelier.

The evening will begin with a champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner which will once again feature a bone-healthy menu. Guests will also experience a special performance by the perennial classic-rock favorite, America, who evolved in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized to the top of the charts with their signature song, “A Horse with No Name.” America celebrated their 40th-year anniversary in 2010 and continues as a mainstay on the domestic and international concert circuit and a cornerstone of 70’s Top 40 FM rock radio.

Honorees include Martha Stewart, America’s most popular guide to stylish living, and known for her company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, which consists of her Emmy-award-winning television show, numerous best-selling books and product lines and widely-read magazines. Committed to healthy living, she has donated millions of dollars to Mount Sinai Hospital for a center for healthy aging.

Russell Warren, MD, has been with the Hospital for Special Surgery for thirty-four years. Dr. Warren was surgeon-in-chief, has been the team physician for the New York Giants for twenty years, and has been named New York Magazine’s Best Doctor for many years.

John M. Bader, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Halcyon Asset Management, will receive the Award for Embodying the Spirit of an Active Lifestyle. He and his wife, Peggy, have been involved with guiding the Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles for many years. Both pursue active lifestyles: enjoying kiteboarding, among other sports, and reside in New York City with their children.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles, developed by Kevin Plancher, MD, a not-for-profit foundation whose principal mission is to promote, support, develop and encourage research and education concerning orthopaedic injuries and musculoskeletal diseases. Support will fund cutting edge research on new and minimally invasive ways to treat pain and keep individuals active. Proceeds will also provide hands on “Doctor for a Day” educational labs for middle school and high school students in the New York and Connecticut region. In the labs, the students will work directly with OFALS’ surgeons and learn how to mend broken bones on lifelike cadavers. This year, the gala will also support the addition of a chief scientific officer to further help OFALS in its mission.

Kevin Plancher, MD, MS, FACS, FAAOS, is a leading orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine expert with offices in Greenwich, Conn. and Manhattan. He has been named a Top Orthopaedic Doctor by Connecticut Magazine for the past seven years and New York Magazine’s Top Doctor for ten consecutive years. The Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles is based in Greenwich, Conn.
