Is there always fire where there is smoke? Former Stamford, Connecticut, mayor and gubernatorial candidate Dan Malloy is questioning fellow Democratic opponent Ned Lamont about a racial discrimination lawsuit that was brought against him and his company back in 2002. According to Malloy's camp, a black former executive at Lamont's cable television company had accused the multimillionaire and his company of mistreating him because of the color of his skin. Federal court records show that former Executive Vice-President of Lamont Digital Systems Inc., Ronald Keene, had sued Lamont's company eight years ago for $1 million in U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania, claiming that the cable television company "maliciously" fired him after being denied stock, bonuses and commissions from sales activity.
The suit claims that Keene was mistreated because of his race. Lamont's company denied the accusations; however, the case was settled in September 2003 just before it was due to go to trial. Both parties agreed to keep the details of the settlement confidential. Lamont's campaign manager called the incident a one-time matter, however, for people of color living in Fairfield County, in particular Greenwich, we remember back in 2006 when Lamont was running against Senator Joseph Lieberman for U.S. Senate and Lieberman attacked Lamont for being a member of a country club that was "not known for its diversity."
Lamont quickly quit the country club, claiming he was not aware of its practices and then later invited Rev. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to a breakfast meeting a Greenwich, a meeting that many blacks in Greenwich did not agree with. As a black person living in Greenwich, when I first heard about the country club incident I was highly disappointed in Lamont; however, I was willing to give him a shot this time around. But after reading about the lawsuit I am not sure I can. For more go to www.theoriginalgreenwichdiva.com
