The T-Mobile cell tower proposal for the Pinetum has dragged into the debate the Cos Cob residents, who have been forced to take action to protect the interest and well being of their families as well as make sure that the intent behind Col. Montgomery's generous gift of the Pinetum to the town of Greenwich is not forgotten.
Just like North Mianus residents are rightfully fighting to keep a cell tower away from their school kids, there are kids in the homes surrounding the proposed location for a cell tower in the Pinetum, not to mention the pre-school enrichment program that's scheduled to open in January that will be in the shadow of the proposed cell tower in the Pinetum.
Town residents should not needlessly be pitted against one another when, to the extent another cell tower is even needed, there are other less obtrusive alternatives. Mr. Tesei proclaimed during the last Board of Selectmen meeting that he considered and rejected other alternatives. As a town resident, I would like to know what are these other alternatives, to make sure that such critical decisions by our representatives are made in full view of the public and available for scrutiny. For example, do they include the pre-existing cell towers in town, or the cell tower that's been approved near the Post Road? Let's not forget, T-Mobile does not have an inalienable right to have its own cell tower in Greenwich.
Lastly, we should also not forget that the Pinetum was given to the town for the enjoyment of its residents and that Col. Montgomery's intent was previously tested when, in 1965, the town's attempt to construct a fire training tower was abandoned after the Montgomery family threatened to sue the town and take back the property for violating the intent of the donor.
