In a major coup for the town's minority party, the Democratic ticket of Lin Lavery and Drew Marzullo outdid their Republican opponents Peter Tesei and David Theis in the money race during the third quarter, new fundraising reports show.
Lavery, a selectman who is opposing Tesei for first selectman, raised $65,965 for her challenge during the period from July 1 to Sept. 30, compared to $52,120 for the GOP incumbent, according to campaign filings with the town clerk.
Marzullo, who is facing Theis in the selectman's race, pulled in $19,040, including a $250 donation from one of the town's more famous residents, celebrity Judge Judy Sheindlin. Theis netted $8,210 in contributions.
Democratic Town Committee Chairman David Roberson was ecstatic about the numbers.
"It shows a lot of real excitement and people's desire for new leadership and direction in town," Roberson said. "I would say it's clearly a reversal of historic patterns...."

That’s a big difference, but the Republicans profess to be unconcerned. ”It’s all about getting people to the polls,” First Selectman candidate Peter Tesei told FWIW’s Scusie yesterday. “Our people have private transportation, the Democrats have to depend on public. And you should see the road work we’ve got scheduled for Election Day on those bus routes. And,” here he paused to close his eyes and fold his hands in gratitude, “we’ve worked out a deal with Mark Curtis and Splash – free detailing for every Beemer, Audi and Benz owner who brings in an ‘I voted today’ sticker. We’ve got it made in the shade, baby.”
