Glen Van Cura takes his time when he goes over bicycle safety and maintenance, knowing that a little preparation will make the ride more enjoyable.
"You have to plan things ahead," said the owner of Dave's Cycle and Fitness in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich. "You don't just pull the bike out of the shed and go."
That means, among other things, knowing how to change a tire, ensure its proper air pressure, lubricate a chain, adjust cables, pick the proper helmet, hydrate properly and pack tools and supplies for a long ride.
It is the kind of advice he gives his customers and community groups, such as some students at Stamford's Academy of Information Technology and Engineering, where he recently spoke in advance of a charity bike ride.
There are many opportunities to ride -- from charity events to competitions, to commuting or cruising through the neighborhood. It may be more commuters seeking to ease the sting of higher gas prices or to become more environmentally conscious. Others suggested with money tight some might be giving up gym memberships and looking for other ways to stay fit......
