WEDNESDAY MARTIN, PH.D.
STEPMONSTER: A NEW LOOK AT WHY REAL STEPMOTHERS THINK, FEEL, AND ACT THE WAY WE DO
Stepmonster
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

One in two women in the United States will marry or live with a man with children, according to projections by experts who study divorce and remarriage. Whether we like it or not, remarrying with children is a fact of modern life. And the research is clear: it's harder for women to be a stepparent than it is for men. Yet researchers have mainly focused on stepfathers and stepchildren, leaving women with stepchildren underconsidered. Who are these women? What motivates them? And are they really wicked? Stepmonster: A New Look at Why Real Stepmothers Think, Feel, and Act the Way We Do (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25), by Wednesday Martin, Ph.D., is an empowering, original, and realistic book that offers a completely new way of looking at women in relationships with men who have children. Rather than focusing on how such repartnering affects the child, Martin explores stepfamily life and dynamics from the stepmother's point of view, asking how remarriage with children affects her - psychologically, socially, and economically. Putting the stepmother in the spotlight, Martin contends that we have a "distorted sense of not only who women with stepchildren really are but also what they should be able to accomplish and how they ought to feel."

TUESDAY, JUNE 9, 6:30 PM
AN EVENING WITH FRANK AND
KATHIE LEE GIFFORD
THE GLORY GAME & JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I'D DROPED MY LAST EGG
Kathie Lee Gifford & Frank Gifford
Avon Theatre
272 Bedford Street, Stamford, CT

Carte Blanche - Free / Members-$10 / Nonmembers-$20
Tickets are now on sale at the Avon box office during showtimes, or call 203-661-0321. Wine & Cheese reception - 6:30pm; Program at 7:00pm

The Avon Theatre welcomes iconic NFL player, TV analyst and Hall of Famer Frank Gifford, along with his wife, TV anchor, actress, singer and performer Kathie Lee Gifford, as the two discuss their recent books -- The Glory Game: How the 1958 NFL Championship Changed Football Forever (Harper, $25.95), by Frank Gifford, and Just When I Thought I Dropped My Last Egg: Life and Other Calamaties (Ballantine Books, $22), by Kathie Lee Gifford.

The Glory Game: How the 1958 NFL Championship Changed Football Forever is a definitive account of the epic, sudden-death overtime 1958 NFL game played before a record-setting national television audience. Featuring the funny, emotional and startlingly clear memories of every living Colt and Giant-former rivals now joined in a select brotherhood- The Glory Game recreates the electrifying atmosphere at Yankee Stadium on December 28, 1958: the game-changing plays, fights, injuries and swings in momentum that eventually led to a Colts victory. This fiercely fought game would become a defining moment in all of the players' lives as well as a pivotal event in the history of the NFL.

Just When I Thought I Dropped My Last Egg: Life And Other Calamaties deals head on with issues of motherhood, career, marriage, aging (in front of and away from the cameras), and overcoming adversity-Gifford proves to us all that there is a whole new way to be fertile after 50. After all, it isn't only children that women give birth to-it's also inspired ideas, aspiring ventures and newly discovered interests. Heartfelt and hilarious, Gifford will make you laugh out loud as you reach for the phone to share these charming, quirky, and colorful observations.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Avon Theatre and D.A.R.T., a charity aiming to cure Niemann-Pick Type C Disease.

RICHARD BROOKHISER
RIGHT TIME, RIGHT PLACE: COMING OF AGE WITH WILLIAM F. BUCKLEY JR. AND THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT
Right Time, Right Place
Just Books
28 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Richard Brookhiser wrote his first cover story for National Review at age fourteen, and became the magazine's youngest senior editor at twenty-three. William F. Buckley Jr. was Brookhiser's mentor, hero, and admirer; within a year of Brookhiser's arrival at the magazine, Buckley tapped him as his successor as editor-in-chief. But without warning, the relationship soured and Brookhiser found on his desk a letter from Buckley unceremoniously informing him "you will no longer be my successor." Brookhiser remained friends and colleagues with Buckley despite the breach, and in Right Time, Right Place (Basic Books, $27.50), he tells the story of that friendship with affection and clarity. At the same time, he provides a delightful account of the intellectual and political ferment of the conservative resurgence that Buckley nurtured and led. Richard Brookhiser is the author of nine books, including George Washington on Leadership and What Would the Founders Do? He is a senior editor of National Review. He wrote and hosted the PBS documentary Rediscovering George Washington, and appears frequently on the History Channel and the Colbert Report. Brookhiser lives in New York City.

JOAN WICKERSHAM
THE SUICIDE INDEX: PUTTING MY FATHER'S DEATH IN ORDER
The Suicide Index
A Just Books' Event at Arcadia Cafe
20 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Just Books welcomes author Joan Wickersham as she explores a difficult and highly personal story in her newest book, The Suicide Index: Putting My Father's Death in Order (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25). Sixteen years ago, Joan Wickersham's father shot himself in the head. The father she loved would never have killed himself, and yet he had. His death made a mystery of his entire life. Using an index-that most formal and orderly of structures, Wickersham explores this chaotic and incomprehensible reality. Every bit of family history-marriage, parents, business failures-and every encounter with friends, doctors, and other survivors exposes another facet of elusive truth. Dark, funny, sad, and gripping, at once a philosophical and deeply personal exploration, The Suicide Index is, finally, a daughter's anguished, loving elegy to her father. Joan Wickersham is the author of the novel The Paper Anniversary. Her work has appeared in the Best American Short Stories series. An excerpt from The Suicide Index earned her the 2007 Ploughshares Cohen Award for Best Short Story. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

WARD JUST
EXILES IN THE GARDEN
Exiles in the Garden
A Just Books' Event at Arcadia Cafe
20 Arcadia Road, Old Greenwich, CT
Free and Open to the Public

Just Books is pleased to welcome Ward Just, author of 15 previous novels, including the National Book Award finalist Echo House, A Dangerous Friend, winner of the Cooper Prize for fiction from the Society of American Historians, and An Unfinished Season, winner of the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award and a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize. Just's Exiles in the Garden (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, $25), is a resonant story of Alec Malone, a senator's son who rejects the family business of politics for a career as a newspaper photographer. Alec and his Swiss wife, Lucia, settle in Georgetown next door to a couple whose émigré gatherings in their garden remind Lucia of all the things Americans are not. She leaves Alec as his career founders on his refusal of an assignment to cover the Vietnam War - a slyly subversive fictional choice from Ward Just, who was himself a renowned war correspondent.
