Greenwich Time's Letters To The Editor
Letters from Readers - Fomenting anger - The ultra-right is cynically creating unrest
To the editor:
This town Democrat gives a big "thank you" to state Republicans for putting forward an alternative budget, which reflects your philosophies and principles ("Tax hikes absent in GOP plan," Greenwich Time, April 17). I may not agree with the plan, but maybe this will provide a lesson for your brethren in Congress and the media on how things should be done in this country.
This has been a very sad week for democracy, filled with phony outrage and mock populism, stirred up by cynical manipulators, radio con men and alleged news organizations that are anything but "fair and balanced."
Give it whatever name you like, but ultra-conservative Republicanism was soundly defeated in the past two national elections. Power does not yield respectfully, and so the commentators, bloggers, partisan interest groups and, unfortunately, many elected officials who are in danger of being marginalized have employed slash-and-burn tactics. They toss around words like fascism, treason and revolution, and disrespect the real words and deeds of our Founding Fathers by equating current policies with tyranny....
....In 2009, who will be our Joseph Welch, the attorney for the U.S. Army in 1954? When confronted with the vile and unsubstantiated attacks by Joseph McCarthy upon an innocent man, he stood firm and accused the accuser thusly: "You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?" Maybe our own Connecticut Republicans will be the ones to show that cooperation and finding common ground are better than the shrieks and howls of an increasingly vile but I hope a less influential extreme right wing.
