He'd ride to the library every Saturday, before the doors opened, and spend the day reading film criticism.
As a boy he wrote to nearly every major critic. Only three responded: Pauline Kael, Judith Crist and Roger Ebert.
He was so nice," Lurie remembered. "He's the one critic who can convince me to see a film that everyone else hates. He has this ability to find qualities where others cannot."
Now Ebert has invited Lurie, a film critic turned film director, to bring his movie "Nothing But the Truth" to Ebert's 11th annual film festival, which opened Wednesday and continues through Sunday at the Virginia Theatre.
Lurie, who will be on stage with actor Matt Dillon, who plays a prosecutor in the movie, after the sold-out 6:30 p.m. Saturday screening, said he's grateful that Ebert is allowing him to show the film to 1,500 cinephiles. Most of them will not have seen the Lurie movie before......
