03/23/09 What is going on???

To the Editor,

On Saturday night, one of the Darien High School nurse's was arrested for serving alcohol to minors. Her daughter, a junior at the DHS,invited what appears to be most of the junior class. The police showed up and did their job. Most likely the 50+ cars tipped someone off. Or was it someone puking in the bushes?

A few years ago, the Darien girl's varsity lacrosse coach got a "slap on the wrist" for drinking with some of her players at a party. The police were not involved and the story was put to rest very quickly. Who would want to peg THE COACH OF THE YEAR as anything but a talented coach?

Recently, in Darien, the Greenwich boy's lacrosse coach was arrested for his 3rd or 4th DWI. The Greenwich Superintendent removed the guy from his coaching position. That was the right thing to do.

I have no tolerance for parents who allow kids to drink at their homes supervised or not. These KIDS end up on the road with me, my family and friends. They may not have had a serious car accident, but it's inevitable. It's only a matter of time before some innocent victim ends up DEAD on the hood of their car.

Like Joey.

I bring this to the attention of the surrounding towns (Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, and Stamford)because it is a STATE WIDE PROBLEM reaching epidemic proportions. Most kids in high school drink, many drive shit faced, and some have the nerve to bring water bottles filled with vodka to class. Drink before, during, and after school? Are you kidding?

Looking at their parents, teachers, and role models, is there any doubt why this is going on? Are the adults involved reliving their adolescence? Were they complete losers then, trying to make up for it now? What is it? Do these parents and teachers think this is appropriate and acceptable behavior? 40 year olds drinking with 15 year olds?? What the hell is wrong with you people?????

Try this on... Anyone who looks the other way, is just as guilty as the people who drink and drive. When you are at the scene of a FATAL DRUNK DRIVING ACCIDENT, you look at someone whose life was cut short. Body parts strewn, twisted metal, broken glass, blood splattered on the road, and blood pools inside the vehicles. If that isn't enough, imagine the family arriving at the hospital morgue to ID their loved one. Do you get it yet???

And finally, if the Mayor's son, or a Senator, or a doctor, teacher, or coach DRINK WITH KIDS OR ALLOW THEM TO DRINK AND DRIVE, they deserve a little jail time where they can mull over the reality of their stupidity. Then go find another job. There are sharper people waiting to fill your shoes.
