10/06/08 PRESS RELEASE: Gemm Learning Launches ‘Gemm at Home'

Gemm Learning Launches ‘Gemm at Home’
K-12 learning intervention center launches home-based package

Greenwich, Connecticut – October 6, 2008 Gemm Learning, a Westchester-based learning intervention service and the largest provider of Fast ForWord software in the U.S., has announced the launch of its new home-based learning package, ‘Gemm at Home.’

Virtual learning is a growing trend. A 2008 report from the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University says eighteen states have full-time virtual schools. With students using computers to take tests and even classes online, offering a reading help program through the home computer is just one more way for already computer-savvy kids to learn.

‘Gemm at Home’ offers parents the opportunity to provide reading help for their children any time, day or night. This new package brings the learning center into the home and includes all of the tools necessary to run the program including pre-enrolled Fast ForWord software, headphones, tokens, tracking sheets and more.

The average youth (aged 5-18) spends about 5 hours a week participating in organized activities according to Joseph L. Mahoney, PhD, of Yale University whose research appeared in a 2007 edition of the Social Policy Report.

“With parents juggling already busy work schedules and their children’s extracurricular activities, being able to provide academic support in the home is an added convenience,” said Geoff Nixon, founder of Gemm Learning. “We offer the same levels of assessment and support as we do in our centers, but parents can schedule the program around their lives.”

For those who live near one of Gemm Learning’s Westchester learning centers or Connecticut learning center, parents can come in for a one-time consultation prior to starting the home program. Those who live a distance away can complete the consultation by phone.

“The consultation helps us determine if the child is a good candidate for the program and offers tips for maximizing the program’s effectiveness,” said Nixon. “It is important to use the program consistently and integrate parental support and an incentive program. We want this to be a rewarding experience for both the parent and the child.”

In addition to providing the pre-enrolled software, Gemm Learning offers prizes and membership in Gemm City, the center’s online social network, to encourage learning and reward initiative.

Online features also keep parents up-to-date on their child’s progress in the ‘Gemm at Home’ program. The team from Gemm Learning monitors each child’s progress daily, through automatically generated online reports, and remains in constant contact with parents to ensure optimal results from the program. Student Reports followed by an in-depth phone analysis of the child’s progress are also included.
