Just last month, Major General Amy S. Courter, became the first woman to become the Civil Air Patrol's National Commander, the highest-ranking leadership position within the organization.
The Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force and is a nonprofit organization with more than 56,000 members nationwide. CAP performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions and was credited with saving 103 lives in 2007. A purely volunteer organization, CAP also performs homeland security, disaster relief and counter-drug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. Its members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to nearly 22,000 young people currently participating in cadet programs.
