Don't blame Democrats for financial mess
To the editor:
A letter in the Sept. 17 Advocate claiming that Congress, controlled by the Democrats for two years, has done nothing to control the runaway financial markets cannot go unchallenged. The Democrats control a narrow majority, but not a filibuster-proof majority, let alone one that is veto-proof.
In 2000, a Republican Congress passed legislation specifically forbidding by law any government oversight of certain types of financial institutions, the types that are currently sucking up tax money and sucking the air out of the economy. Small town, Main Street America may be the fantasy model of the Republicans, but corporate CEOs and CFOs are the heavy hitters when it comes to financing campaigns and lobbying. By and large they are not Democrats, especially not in the voting booth.
