09/17/10 PRESS RELEASE: GREENWICH ARTIST AND TEACHER TO EXHIBIT IN FLORENCE, ITALY

Acclaimed local artist, Ellen Colcord, has been chosen to exhibit at a renown art gallery in Florence, Italy this fall.

Ms. Colcord offers a unique series of art classes to both adults and children at her studios in Greenwich and New York City.

Ellen Colcord, Greenwich artist and teacher, is the featured artist at an exhibition to be held at the Galleria Tornabuoni in Florence, Italy this fall. Inspired by a month long art retreat in the Costa Rican jungle this past winter, Colcord’s exhibition is entitled “Pink Ball in the Night” and runs from October 30 through November 15 in a 13th century palazzo near the Uffizi Museum. Colcord’s 50+ works feature a series of paper and mixed media paintings on wood panels and are abstract and metaphysical in nature.

“I was in the Costa Rican jungle off the coast of the Pacific Ocean and had a vision for “Pink Ball” while observing the planet Venus through my tent at night. It was unusually low in the sky and beautifully mysterious,” says Colcord a long-time Greenwich resident and professional artist for over 30 years. “My exhibition is based on a resulting book that I published of paintings and writings about that experience.” Throughout the exhibition a large pink ball (video) mysteriously enters the space and visits each painting to the otherworldly sounds of music orchestrated by Combo Nuvo.

Antonio Vanni, a curator from the Uffizi, first approached Ellen about doing a show this summer. As an artist who has studied and exhibited in Italy frequently over the years, Colcord has many professional and personal ties to the country.

“Pink Ball is a celebration of the metaphysical nature in Art,” says Vanni. “A transformative experience of the seen and unseen. The paintings in this exhibition take you to the outer limits of the artist’s imagination. Ellen Colcord is a Master.”

A former resident artist and committee member at the Greenwich Arts Council, Ellen holds Masters degrees in Fine Arts and Art and Religion from New York University and Yale respectively and completed a Masters Program in Painting at the prestigious Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino, Italy.

She has run a professional artist’s studio in Greenwich for the last sixteen years where she has produced work for such diverse groups as the Stuart Weitzman Corporation in Beverly Hills, CA and Laurel Tree Records.

She has also taught painting at The Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts in New York, The Aldrich Museum Workshops in Ridgefield, Connecticut and lectured at Sacred Heart University and Yale University on religious icons and spirituality. Ellen has had numerous painting and video exhibitions internationally.

Ellen teaches beginning and advanced art classes to both adults and children at her Greenwich and New York City studios. She particularly loves working with children of all ages.

“I like to work around a student’s interest. For example, if they like animals, they will learn to draw and paint that subject matter. We work from still life and from photographs and paint on stretched canvas.” Ellen focuses a lot of personal attention on her pupils, who may not get that kind of impassioned input from an art class at their schools.

Ellen believes that art can have a profoundly positive impact on children’s’ emotional/intellectual lives and self-esteem; “My students feel a great sense of accomplishment from their art and that makes me very happy!”
