administration to add the demolition of the modulars and site restoration
to the 2010-11 capital plan, approved 7-0.
Monitoring Report: E-003 - Math
Prek-12 Math Coordinator, Truxtun Southworth and Greenwich High School
Math Program Administrator Barbara Collins presented the annual Math
Monitoring Report to the Board. Topics of discussion included middle
school achievement and time allocations for math, enrollment in AP
classes, math teacher retention and turnover, expectations for increases
in enrollment in higher level math classes at GHS with the implementation
of Algebra in 8th grade for all students, Hamilton Avenue School Math
achievement, and coaching. The report will return to the Board at their
December 17, 2009 meeting for action.
Science Curriculum Review Update
PreK-12 Science Coordinator, Sheila Civale and Science Review consultant,
Dr. Davis Moss from the University of Connecticut, presented an update on
the ongoing review. They presented a description of Inquiry, a "minds on"
as well as a "hands on" approach to learning, encouraging students to
notice, wonder, design investigations, journal, research answers to
questions and then present their findings. They discussed short and long
term targets for improvement in achievement and the timeline for the
review and implementation of changes. The report is available as part of
the Board meeting documents and on the Science Review Update page of the
web site at: http://www.greenwichschools.org/page.cfm?p=31
Report on Continuing Education
Director of Budget and Systems, Richard Calcavecchio, presented a report
on the Greenwich Continuing Education program, detailing a successful, 'in
the black,' first semester.
Report on Summer School
Summer School Coordinator Trish McGuire, Deputy Superintendent Ellen
Flanagan, and Director of PPS Mary Forde presented the report on Summer
School 2009.
Review of Use of Hearing Officer
The Board reviewed their decision made in 2008 to use a hearing officer
for expulsion hearings only when Board members are not available. Since
the Board's decision last year, a hearing officer was used at
approximately 15% of the hearings. The Board discussed their objective to
minimize the use of a hearing officer, that Board members should make
every effort to attend the hearings and use the hearing officer only when
absolutely necessary. The Board will act on this decision at its December
17, 2009 meeting.
BOE 2009-10 Agenda Plan
Reviewed and adjusted per discussion. The plan is available as part of
Board materials for each work session and regular monthly meeting.
Next Board Meeting
The next meeting is the Board of Education Budget Meeting on Tuesday,
December 10, 2009, 7:00 PM at Cos Cob School. There will be an opportunity
for a public hearing, followed by a Board discussion on the budget Q&A.
