Church band holds fund-raiser for homeless

Steeplechase, the Second Congregational Church band, will play a concert of 1960s music at the church Sunday, March 8, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to benefit Pacific House, a shelter for homeless men in Stamford.

Men from Pacific House will attend, and church members who volunteer for twice-a-month meal servings at the shelter will be recognized.

The public is invited. A light “60s” meal will be served. Donations are encouraged.

Steeplechase, composed mainly of professional musicians, will play folk music and selections from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. era. The concert will feature music by artists including Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Bob Dylan; James Taylor; Peter, Paul and Mary; Simon and Garfunkel; and Phil Ochs.

“Steeplechase is a band with a mission,” said the Rev. Robert H. Naylor, senior minister of Second Congregational Church and an occasional band member. “Feeling the call of the gospel, band members last year decided to focus on fund-raisers for social-outreach organizations. For example, Steeplechase has performed benefits for the Cos Cob Fire Department and Soldiers for the Truth.”

Mr. Naylor and Kreg Gotschall, a church soloist and a music teacher at Stanwich School in Greenwich, formed Steeplechase three years ago. Most members also play in regional bands. The group has offered concerts of music from the Beatles, the Allman Brothers, blues, rock and roll, the 1960s, and Christian contemporary music.

“People attending “People attending Steeplechase concerts have been pleased with the professional quality of the music,” Mr. Naylor said. “While many of the selections are secular, the band brings the joy and service elements of our faith to each concert.”
