06/22/09 Media Alert: Swm Across America June 27 Greenwich to Stamford Swim

SAA Logo
MEDIA ALERT

SWIM ACROSS AMERICA GREENWICH TO STAMFORD SWIM
SATURDAY, JUNE 27, 2009
Swimmers Make Waves to Fight Cancer
WHO: The third annual SWIM ACROSS AMERICA GREENWICH TO STAMFORD SWIM is making a big splash in the area in its fight against cancer with its swim scheduled for Saturday, June 27, 2009.

WHAT: There will be two open water swims - a 1.5 mile swim that starts at the beach at Greenwich (Tod's) Point with participants swimming along the shore of Long Island Sound, and a shorter half-mile swim (geared for swimmers ages 12 and older), that is also in Long Island Sound and leaves from the Rocky Point Club in Old Greenwich. In addition, Swim Across America is offering a pool swim this year at the Rocky Point Club for those who prefer to pledge their support in a pool. All swimmers end up at Cummings Point in Stamford, Conn., at the headquarters for the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT), which is the beneficiary of the swim and will use the funds raised to support a research grant for brain cancer with one of ACGT's research fellows at Harvard University.

ACGT is the nation's only non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to funding cancer gene therapy research. All Swim Across America participants and volunteers must register in advance at http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102619613408&s=42220&e=001qt3zyY98v8VzwzVXYbi-zTrI-MoXE8DY-LK-kpuVcgPnRKg7B--r-Qy6VRhwv_-thYXHCUrXVGweOFZwQ-Sij-NxA5fyVj0gUXf_oRCqcmPz7JwJCPYHxmkoMBUiprpM by clicking on the Greenwich Swim link.

There are numerous "teams" swimming this year in honor of friends and loved that are battling cancer or in memory of loved ones who have lost their fight to cancer. One team is "Team Max," which is in memory of Max Scotti, a seven year-old Greenwich resident and avid swimmer who lost his fight to brain cancer just this past April. Other individual swimmers and teams include friends, family and even cancer survivors, such as Karen Newman, a five-time all American triathlete who is swimming for the third time in a Swim Across America event. Karen is an Old Greenwich resident who is battling breast cancer. Swimmers come from all over Fairfield and Westchester Counties to participate in this event.

Several Olympic swimmers will also be swimming on Saturday and include Janel Jorgensen, Craig Beardsley and Brenda Borgh Bartlett. The honorary co-chairs include Olympic swimming champion Donna de Varona and her husband John Pinto, and John and Cindy Sites.

Riverside man gets four years in drunken-driving death

STAMFORD -- A Riverside man was sentenced to four years in prison Tuesday for an October 2008 drunken-driving accident that killed 20-year-old Joseph Borselio of Greenwich.

At state Superior Court, Judge Richard Comerford listened to impassioned pleas from Borselio's family to sentence Douglas Moore, 25, to the maximum jail time he could receive.

"It's outrageous to me," said Kayla Borselio, Joseph Borselio's older sister of the accident. "I wonder how someone can engage in such irresponsible drinking and take away someone that was completely happy with their life," she said while sobbing.

06/22/09 So You Were Thinking About Going Into Port Chester For Nice And Quiet Meal .....

Port Chester man's head is smashed into eatery window during argument

Lower Hudson Journal news, West Harrison NY

PORT CHESTER - A Port Chester man had his head shoved into a restaurant window during an argument last night, police said. A 55-year-old Port Chester man was charged in the incident.

Lt. James Ladeairous gave this account:

Pedro Antonio Donis, 55, of 79 S. Regent St. in Port Chester, approached a 22-year-old man sitting inside the Hollywood Chicken restaurant, 216 Westchester Ave.

An argument between the two men led Donis to push the victim, and the younger man's head hit and broke one of the restaurant windows.

The victim was sent to Greenwich Hospital for evaluation for head pain; he was not cut. Ladeairous had no update today on his condition.

Donis was charged with attempted third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief, misdemeanors. The mischief charge stemmed from the breaking of the $600 window.

Donis made $250 bail and is due in Port Chester Village Court on June 29.

The Greenwich Advocate? – Our Greenwich
By Frank Trotta
The other morning I noticed the masthead on the paper in the Greenwich Time box in front of St. Mary’s on the Avenue said “Advocate.”

The first thought that crossed my mind was “they are coming out of the closet” — that the Southern Connecticut Newspapers, Inc. company was admitting, finally, that the difference between the Stamford Advocate and the Greenwich Time was merely cosmetic — like the difference between a Ford Crown Vic and a Mercury Grand Marquis: same car, different grill.

Well, it turns out the Advocate in the green box in front of St. Mary’s was a delivery error. The charade of a truly Greenwich daily continues, at least for now. But the readers know, Greenwich Time = Stamford Advocate = Norwalk Advocate = Connecticut Post = Danbury News Times. .....

06/20/09 Media Alert: Greenwich Commons

http://commons.greenwich.org

There are more than 20,000 residences in Greenwich, and hundreds of
video and digital cameras. Citizens in Greenwich are video taping all of
sorts events around our fair community, and it is those videos that
Greenwich Commons wants to capture.

We are planning to collect all sorts of videos, photographs, and
narrations about Greenwich events, edit them together, and create a
Greenwich newsreel. Specifically, for the many, many events that happen
in Greenwich, we want to capture our local community and show it on
cable access. We will do the editing, all you need to do is provide
photos, narration, and videos to make this happen. Have some footage of
a parade? A fund raiser? A fair? Upload it to us, and let us bring it to
the big screen!

We will update this site to tell you what are deadlines for submission
are, when we hope to have the newsreel broadcast, and on what cable
channels. We ask you to read the Terms so there are no questions about
how all this will work. If you have a finished, edited segment, we will
accept those, too.

Please help us bring Greenwich to the screen so we can present our
diverse and exciting community to all our citizens.

DISTRICT HOSTS DR. BERNICE McCARTHY

Because Great Minds Don’t All Think Alike

(For immediate Release: Wednesday, June 17, 2009 – Greenwich. CT)

The Greenwich PublicSchools’ Advanced Learning Program is hosting a professional learning workshop for staff and acommunity forum with Dr. Bernice McCarthy, internationally renowned author and founder of AboutLearning, Inc. and the 4Mat System. The Community Forum will be held on Thursday, June 25,2009 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium at Eastern Middle School.

Dr. McCarthy is a prolific author who has drawn on the research of Jung, Piaget, Vygotsky, Dewey,Lewin and Kolb, to create an instructional system that progresses through the complete learning cycle, using strategies that appeal to all types of learners. This innovative approach, the 4Mat System, beganas a model for instruction with students. As the value of Dr. McCarthy’s model gained wide-spreadrecognition, the 4Mat System quickly spread from the world of education into the corporate andgovernment worlds. The model is based on the understanding that people perceive and process information in differentways and demonstrates how those differences have an impact on success in learning. At the community forum, attendees will enhance their understanding of how people learn, discovertheir own particular approach to learning, and assess their own strengths and challenges as a learner.

Attendees should be ready to:

• Hunch your favorite learning style preference

• Examine how you master the less comfortable parts of the learning cycle

• Experience the learning styles of others and why professions attract the same styles

• Examine the theory and research behind style and brain processing preferences

• Enhance your understanding of the Learning Cycle and how it works in organizations

• Explore potential uses of style knowledge and the 4MAT Cycle as a teacher, or trainer, orparent or leader/manager for your life work

Dr. McCarthy's clients include:
