Facebook 'paid out $65m' to end lawsuit claiming idea for website was stolen

Daily Mail

Facebook paid out $65 million to two former classmates to end a lawsuit claiming the idea for the massively successful social networking site was stolen, it has been revealed.

Founder Mark Zuckerberg has been accused in the past of having stolen the idea for the website from his two college room mates who then set up ConnectU, a smaller social network.

Now the law firm that represented ConnectU have included the settlement amount Facebook purportedly paid ConnectU's founders in a newsletter.

Lawyers from law firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges represented ConnectU in a lawsuit that ended in a settlement in June last year.

In the law suit ConnectU's three founders claimed that Mark Zuckerberg agreed to finish computer code for their site while all three were studying at Harvard in 2003.

But they claimed that Zuckerberg repeatedly stalled before eventually created Facebook using their ideas.

Under their settlement, Facebook agreed to pay ConnectU $20 million in cash and 1,253,326 shares of common stock.

The stock was worth $45 million, based on the Microsoft valuation, but only $11 million under Facebook's own appraisal.

That means ConnectU received anywhere from $31 million and $65 million for settling the suit, depending on which stock valuation is used.

Facebook started in 2004, a few months before ConnectU went online, and now has 31 million users, compared with about 70,000 users for ConnectU, based in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Treasury Bills Trade at Negative Rates as Demand for Investor Haven Surges
Bloomberg
Treasuries rose, pushing rates on the three-month bill negative for the first time, as investors gravitate toward the safety of U.S. government debt amid the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

The Treasury sold $27 billion of three-month bills yesterday at a discount rate of 0.005 percent, the lowest since it starting auctioning the securities in 1929. The U.S. also sold $30 billion of four-week bills today at zero percent for the first time since it began selling the debt in 2001.

“It’s the year-end factor,” said Chris Ahrens, an interest-rate strategist in Greenwich, Connecticut, at UBS Securities LLC, one of the 17 primary dealers that trade directly with the Federal Reserve. “Everyone wants to be in bills going into year-end. Buy now while the opportunity is still there.”

The benchmark 10-year note’s yield tumbled 11 basis points, or 0.11 percentage point, to 2.63 percent at 4:48 p.m. in New York, according to BGCantor Market Data. The 3.75 percent security due in November 2018 gained 31/32, or $9.69 per $1,000 face amount, to 109 23/32. The yield touched 2.505 percent on Dec. 5, the lowest level since at least 1962, when the Fed’s daily records began.

The two-year note’s yield fell 10 basis points to 0.84 percent. It dropped to a record low of 0.77 percent on Dec. 5.

If you invested $1 million in three-month bills at today’s negative discount rate of 0.01 percent, for a price of 100.002556, at maturity you would receive the par value for a loss of $25.56.

‘Horrible Year’

Indirect bidders, a group that includes foreign central banks, bought 47.2 percent of the four-week bills, compared with 31.7 percent in the prior auction. Primary dealers bought 52.1 percent, while direct bidders such as individual investors purchased 0.7 percent.

“It’s been such a horrible year people want to show they have the good stuff on their balance sheets, not the bad stuff, but with yields already so low it pushes these even lower,” said Theodore Ake, the head of Treasury trading in New York at Mizuho Securities USA Inc., another primary dealer.

The rate on four-week bills peaked at 5.175 percent on Jan. 29, 2007. The government began issuing the four-week bills in July 2001, according to Stephen Meyerhardt, a spokesman for the Bureau of Public Debt in Washington. The bills are intended to reduce the government’s reliance on irregularly issued cash management bills.

Meyerhardt wasn’t aware of the three-month bill ever trading at a negative rate before.

Housing Slump

Treasuries of all maturities have returned 11.4 percent this year, according to Merrill Lynch & Co.’s U.S. Treasury Master Index. That compares with a 39 percent loss in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, including reinvested dividends.

Bonds have surged as the U.S. housing slump pushed up the cost of credit globally, causing equity markets to tumble. The world’s biggest financial companies incurred almost $1 trillion in writedowns and credit losses since the start of last year, helping push the major economies into recession ...

Here is today's "Hedge Fund Guy Sucking Wind" story.....

Foreclosure Auction Set On Lauer's Greenwich Mansion

By Kenneth R. Gosselin at kgosselin@courant.com.

A former hedge fund manager's mansion in Greenwich is headed for an Internal Revenue Service foreclosure auction.

It's yet another problem for the owner, Michael Lauer.Six months ago, securities regulators and law enforcement officials indicted Lauer and four associates of the now-defunct Lancer Group of hedge funds, alleging that they defrauded investors of more than $200 million between 1999 and 2003.

If Lauer is still living in the 7,300-square-foot, contemporary estate at 7 Dwight Lane — and that couldn't be determined Thursday — he had better get ready for some visitors: The IRS is holding two open houses for bidders, today and Sept. 25.

The open houses could draw those curious to see how the other half lives in addition to possible bidders. But the scheduled Sept. 26 auction will require some serious cash: Bidding starts at $2.5 million.

...Real estate records show that Lauer, who once reportedly worked as a New York City cabby, bought the estate for $2.3 million in 1999.

Lauer's Lancer Group was linked to a scandal in 2003 involving the investment of state of Connecticut pension funds that lost millions in value....

GREENWICH, Conn.—Greenwich police have charged a 75-year-old man with murder in the shooting and stabbing death of a woman in a back yard of a home.

Gerardo Lombardi was arrested Thursday after police responded to a call of gunshots at a home on Nicholas Avenue.

Police say they found Lombardo in the back yard of the home next to his and found the victim, a white woman in her 40s, dead.

The victim's identity has not been released. A police spokesman says police recovered weapons at the scene.

Lombardi is being held by the Greenwich Police Department on a $2 million cash bond and is to appear in Stamford Superior Court Friday.

For What It's Worth Link:
UPDATE #2
7 Dwight Lane
Here's the house on Dwight Lane that's being sold via court judgment later this month. If you enlarge the first photo you'll notice that the house, built in 1986, has suffered from malign neglect. The original builder was on site and the auctioneer says that the man will "fix everything" for $100,000. Considering that that would involve, at a minimum, new siding, new decks, new electrical, new pool and God knows what else, that sum sounds suspiciously optimistic to me.
As did the auctioneer himself, who told me that his only problem was that he "only has one of these to sell". I questioned him on that and he assured me that $2.5 million was only going to be the starting bid and that he already had numerous buyers chomping at the bit. If he does, they almost certainly aren't from Greenwich because I can't believe anyone familiar with our town and this street's location would share the auctioneer's fevered enthusiasm.
Of course, he could have been shucking and jiving me - you think?
The grounds are nice, though. By the way, I forgot what else needs replacement: the tennis court.
