By taking different-shaped hearts and making them into a smiley face, Cassidy Koopmann, 8, carefully constructed a Valentine's Day card for his mother.

"I think she is going to really love it," he said, whispering as she sat next to him.

Cassidy was one of more than a dozen children who took part in Cos Cob Library's annual Valentine's card-making workshop Saturday.

Andrea Chisholm calls it the Academy Awards for dogs, while her husband, Colin Chisholm III, sees it as the canine Olympics. Leora Levy thinks it's most comparable to the Miss America Pageant.

All three Greenwich residents agree, however, that the Westminster Kennel Club's annual show -- which their pooches will compete in Monday and Tuesday at New York's Madison Square Garden -- is the big time.....

While discouraged by the potential loss of state funds for a planned museum expansion, officials at the Bruce Museum say they understand the need for belt-tightening measures by the state at a time when they too are looking to trim their budget.

In her budget address Wednesday, Gov. M. Jodi Rell proposed canceling upward of $400 million in bond authorizations made in the past five years, including half of a $1.5 million bond package for a campaign to renovate and expand the Bruce Museum.....

One day last winter, "Julia" drove to New Jersey to ask the younger brother she loved and for whose life she feared a single question.

With Julia, a 60-something woman who asked that her real name not be used, were her husband, older brother and cousin, as well as Paul Sorensen, executive director of the Greenwich Center for Hope and Renewal......

"Oh, Mommy, Everything is great in town, but those Hamilton Avenue School blues are bringing me down. Yeah, yeah yeah."

"Simply stated, the state of the town is terrific," First Selectman Peter Tesei said. "At the end of the day, we are a strong and vibrant community."

Story:

With 133 days in office under his belt, First Selectman Peter Tesei took to the podium this afternoon to deliver his first State of Town address at the Milbrook Club...

...Before taking office, Tesei was a banker and member of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce who was in the audience as prior first selectmen delivered their State of the Town addresses. Today, he was relishing in his new role in front of the microphone. "Mary Ann Morrison asked me to hold this microphone like a rock star," he said of the chamber's executive director. "I'll try my best." Tesei shared the podium with Town Planner Diane Fox, who is heading the effort to create a new Plan of Conservation and Development....

....Tesei also credited himself with helping the Board of Education in its land-use process, setting up meetings and asking town regulatory officials to cooperate with educators as they explore options for relocating students from Hamilton Avenue and Glenville schools.

"I need to intervene and take leadership," he said....

03/20/08 - "I just feel it's an important issue to bring forward again," First Selectman Peter Tesei said

Mary Ann Morrison, the CEO and president of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, said the proposal was a reasonable compromise.

.... "Mr. Tesei still sees the value and importance of keeping the police officers at the three major intersections on Greenwich Avenue, and let's hope it stays that way."

Ave. traffic light plan revised

Greenwich Time - Staff Writer

After getting the red light from the Representative Town Meeting last year, a proposal to install traffic signals on Greenwich Avenue is back, this time with some changes.

The lights would be installed on Greenwich Avenue at Havemeyer Place, Elm and Lewis streets, and would sit atop antique-style lampposts similar to the existing streetlamps. Police officers would still direct traffic during the day, and the traffic lights would be used at night and on Sundays....

... "I don't want to lose Greenwich, what little is left of the old town," said Joan Caldwell, a lifelong resident who is moderator pro tempore of the RTM.

Caldwell said traffic lights would ruin the town's main street, "making Greenwich look like downtown White Plains."

"It is actually likely to make the town look more citified," Caldwell said.

Her colleague, Mary Pellegrino, a District 1/South Center RTM member who represents the downtown, was more direct. "I think that's rotten," Pellegrino said. "Come on, let's be practical. We're getting out of hand in this town."....

... Police Chief David Ridberg, who has long argued that having police officers direct traffic is not the best use of manpower and hurts morale....

... Selectman Peter Crumbine downplayed the change the lights might bring. "They should blend in all right," he said.

Tesei stressed that he has no intention of replacing the police officers altogether, but acknowledged he probably doesn't have much pull in the matter.

"It most likely will probably get voted down," Tesei said. "But I think it's important to have the conversation."
