Kristopher P. Chimblo, of 13 Harold St., Cos Cob, was arrested at 12:10 p.m. after police received a report of a knife-wielding man, according to police.

"Someone observed him exiting a rest room with a knife in his hand and putting it in his pocket," said Lt. Daniel Allen of the Greenwich Police Department.

Plain-clothes officers, already stationed at Town Hall for the announcement of municipal employee layoffs, and uniformed officers found Chimblo and a three-inch switchblade on him, police said.

Foreclosure Auction Set On Lauer's Greenwich Mansion

A former hedge fund manager's mansion in Greenwich is headed for an Internal Revenue Service foreclosure auction.

It's yet another problem for the owner, Michael Lauer.Six months ago, securities regulators and law enforcement officials indicted Lauer and four associates of the now-defunct Lancer Group of hedge funds, alleging that they defrauded investors of more than $200 million between 1999 and 2003.

If Lauer is still living in the 7,300-square-foot, contemporary estate at 7 Dwight Lane — and that couldn't be determined Thursday — he had better get ready for some visitors: The IRS is holding two open houses for bidders, today and Sept. 25.

The open houses could draw those curious to see how the other half lives in addition to possible bidders. But the scheduled Sept. 26 auction will require some serious cash: Bidding starts at $2.5 million.

...Real estate records show that Lauer, who once reportedly worked as a New York City cabby, bought the estate for $2.3 million in 1999.

Lauer's Lancer Group was linked to a scandal in 2003 involving the investment of state of Connecticut pension funds that lost millions in value....

Greenwich man charged with murder in woman's death

GREENWICH, Conn.—Greenwich police have charged a 75-year-old man with murder in the shooting and stabbing death of a woman in a back yard of a home.

Gerardo Lombardi was arrested Thursday after police responded to a call of gunshots at a home on Nicholas Avenue.

Police say they found Lombardo in the back yard of the home next to his and found the victim, a white woman in her 40s, dead.

The victim's identity has not been released. A police spokesman says police recovered weapons at the scene.

Lombardi is being held by the Greenwich Police Department on a $2 million cash bond and is to appear in Stamford Superior Court Friday.

Here's the house on Dwight Lane that's being sold via court judgment later this month. If you enlarge the first photo you'll notice that the house, built in 1986, has suffered from malign neglect. The original builder was on site and the auctioneer says that the man will "fix everything" for $100,000. Considering that that would involve, at a minimum, new siding, new decks, new electrical, new pool and God knows what else, that sum sounds suspiciously optimistic to me.

As did the auctioneer himself, who told me that his only problem was that he "only has one of these to sell". I questioned him on that and he assured me that $2.5 million was only going to be the starting bid and that he already had numerous buyers chomping at the bit. If he does, they almost certainly aren't from Greenwich because I can't believe anyone familiar with our town and this street's location would share the auctioneer's fevered enthusiasm.

Of course, he could have been shucking and jiving me - you think?

The grounds are nice, though. By the way, I forgot what else needs replacement: the tennis court.

04/01/08 - The Police Blotter - Getting Drugs Out Of Greenwich High School

Police Watch:

Police do not release the names of those 17 years old and younger because they are protected as juveniles or youthful offenders. The Post does not publish the names of those arrested in domestic violence incidents to protect the identities of the victims. The following are March 31's released arrests:

POSSESSION

A 17-year-old Greenwich boy was arrested March 28 and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police had been sent to Greenwich High School after a security guard allegedly saw a group of students together exchanging money. According to police reports, the guard considered the activity suspicious and took all four students to the assistant headmaster. A small bag of marijuana was then allegedly found in the boy’s possession. A search was later conducted of his home and police reported finding drug paraphernalia. The boy was released on a $250 cash bond and is due in court April 2.

POSSESSION

A 16-year-old Cos Cob boy was arrested March 28 and charged with possession of marijuana under four ounces and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell. Police were sent to Greenwich High School after a boy had been detained for narcotics possession. A school security officer told police they had been told the boy had magnesium shavings in his possession and a search reportedly revealed a wood Chinese puzzle box within his backpack. The box allegedly contained 11 small bags containing marijuana, which police believed had been packaged to sell. The boy was released on a $250 cash bond and is due in court April 2.

After previous threats from fellow prisoners during trips to court, a judge has granted a request by Alan Golder, the suspect accused of being the stealthy "Dinnertime Bandit" jewelry burglar, to be brought to hearings by himself.

Since his arrest by Greenwich police in December, other prisoners have threatened Golder, 53, public defender Howard Ehring, Golder's attorney said yesterday....

... Ehring said he expected some discussion in a court hearing today on Golder's requests to have charges and evidence thrown out based on his questioning the validity of testimony of a burglary victim who identified Golder as the masked man who confronted her in her home.

Golder also argues authorities illegally extradited him from Europe, and that federal authorities reneged on a promise to put him in a witness protection program to shield him from vengeful organized crime figures due to his 1980 testimony about a Manhattan jewelry fencing ring.

Golder is being held at the MacDougall-Walker Correctional Facility in Suffield on $3 million bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford today. Assistant State's Attorney Joseph Valdes, the prosecutor in the case, declined comment on the case.

With the modular classrooms closed for at least a week and the prospect of their children being dispersed to other schools, Hamilton Avenue School parents took to the streets in protest Monday morning.

More than 30 parents and children picked up signs and picketed outside the Board of Education offices in response to the news that the modular classrooms the students have been in since spring 2005 would be closed for at least this week due to mold concerns from a leaky roof. Hamilton Avenue parents and children walked with messages such as “Deja Vu, Shame on You,” “No More Lies,” “Rich Town, Poor School” and “This is Greenwich?”

An emergency school board meeting is scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m. in the Greenwich High School auditorium to discuss plans for the school. Nothing has been announced other than the school closure.

Ms. Sternberg and Board of Education Chairwoman Nancy Weissler could not be reached for comment before the meeting. The relocation plan is expected to be revealed tonight.

Parents have raised the point that the original building was deemed educationally unsound because of mold problems.

Construction problems have plagued the project since its inception and completion, which was originally expected in time to open the school last September, is now not expected until June, leaving parents visibly frustrated. Though the protest was not sanctioned by the school’s PTA, it was organized by PTA member Mina Bibeault. She said the effort was organized starting Sunday morning and a group of six parents made the signs....

“This could have all been avoided,” Ms. Bibeault said. “I don’t think we’re being told the truth and we really want the truth and the answers about what’s really happened. We have been in serious violation of fire codes since the beginning of the school year and that has not been addressed... This is being covered up by the mold issue. The mold issue definitely could have been addressed. We’ve had leaky roofs for almost a year now. We were putting band-aids on it because we thought we would be going to the new building. Shame on the Board of Education. Shame for not taking us more seriously and not taking the risk to our children more seriously.”
Ms. DiBella said she felt the board was not listening to the community. She said the community had received no information other than the school was closed and the meeting will be held tonight.

“They’re going to do what they’re going to do and to hell with what everybody else feels,” Ms. DiBella said. “There’s been no consensus. There’s been no discussion. There’s been no agreement. They haven’t even attempted to get us on board with whatever plans they have.”

A special meeting was held Sunday morning to discuss the issue. The meeting was called by Ms. Sternberg and was neither an official board meeting (because of an absence of enough board members to make a quorum) nor an official PTA meeting though Hamilton Avenue Principal Damaris Rau and Glenville Principal Marc D’Amico and PTA members from both schools attended. Press was not permitted to attend.

Greenwich police officers kept a watch on the protest to make sure pedestrian traffic wasn’t impacted. Officers were also deployed to the modulars to make sure all parents dropping off children knew the school was closed. Public Information Officer Lt. Daniel Allen said there were no incidents.

School officials scramble to put together relocation plan

Board of Education officials said they are furiously working on a relocation plan for Hamilton Avenue School, with the goal of presenting an overview at tonight's public meeting and the details by Wednesday and Thursday. "We've got people working around the clock," district spokeswoman Kim Eves said. "There are so many details to work out in order to be able to logistically pull that off."

What next for Ham Ave.? Board of Ed tries to keep homerooms, grades together

After closing Hamilton Avenue School for the upcoming week because of mold discovered in the walls of temporary classrooms, education officials will reveal a plan tonight to discuss their plans to relocate students to other schools for the remainder of the school year.

12/27/07 - Please Help Me Get Up To Spead On The Issues Affecting Byram

As many of you know I am the newest member to the Greenwich RTM for district 4 (Byram).

Also many of you know that I feel that Byram is undeserved by the building department, parking enforcement, public works, and the police department.

What I would really like is to get comments from the residents of Byram about these and other departments so that I can bring them to the first RTM meeting of 2008.

I intend to be an outspoken and strong advocate for Byram, which has been neglected far too long.

Tonight, I am going to speak on the Sam Romeo show about the poor job that the police department does of patrolling and protecting Byram.

Mr. Romeo rightly demands accountability of all departments of Greenwich Government. Yet he refuses to use his WGCH microphone to demand the same accountability of the Greenwich Police Department.

Please understand that I do not think at this time that the individual officers are the problem.

I support the police officers, my car is loaded with Greenwich police union stickers going back for years.

I really think the problem is with how the police brass manage the Greenwich Police Department. The Republican administration should have gotten an outside professional to replace Chief Walters.

11/13/07 - Veteran detective turns in his badge

Helping investigate crooked Greenwich financier Martin Frankel and helping to found a joint arson task force with the town Fire Department are two career milestones that stand out for Detective Edward Zack, he said yesterday.

A week before retirement from the Greenwich Police Department, the 51-year-old said he would miss the collaborative efforts with other current and retired town detectives which have helped break cases big and small.

'Over 29 years, you work with some unbelievable people who have great strengths in certain areas,' Zack said. 'Over time, as you go along, you wish a particular person was here because they were so good at something.'

Saturday the Greenwich native will work his last day for the town. In early December, Zack will continue his detective work as an inspector with the State's Attorneys Office in Bridgeport, investigating cases for prosecutors before they are taken to trial.

Zack said the desire for more professional satisfaction and additional income as his two teenage sons approach college age drove him to this decision.

'My personal feeling is I've been here 29 years and it's just not fun here anymore,' Zack said. 'You know when it's time to go.'

Detective Sgt. Thomas Kelly, Zack's supervisor, said his colleague's experience and skills as an arson investigator as well as a state-certified forensic computer investigator have been critical.
'His experience and knowledge in here will be greatly missed,' Kelly said. 'I wish him luck in his new job with the state.'

Zack attended Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., graduating in 1973. His nephew, Thomas Zack, is a deputy chief at the Greenwich Fire Department.

'We have deep roots in town,' he said.

Zack said he and other detectives began investigating Greenwich financier Martin Frankel in 1997 following the suicide of Francis Burge, who was found hanging from the back deck of Frankel's Greenwich mansion.

Police efforts played an important role in Frankel's 1999 indictment and conviction in 2002 on federal charges of racketeering, conspiracy, securities fraud and wire fraud for defrauding $200 million from insurance companies.

'We knew right away after the suicide it was not a normal situation and something was wrong with Marty Frankel,' he said. 'We did what we could to pursue it.'

In March 2002, as Danbury Police searched for 13-year-old Christina Long, Zack performed a forensic analysis of Dos Reis' computer, which helped Danbury Police determine that the Greenwich man had met with the eighth-grader the night she disappeared, he said........
