06/20/10 Did Foley divorce personal, work life?

Topix Greenwich
Greenwich News - June 20, 2010
It was late 2001, and Thomas C. Foley , a Greenwich investor and a major Republican Party fundraiser, was immersed in a contentious and protracted battle with his ex-wife for custody of his 11-year-old son.
Dear Editor, Imagine, if you will, living in a neighborhood where all of your neighbors hate you. They routinely walk through your yard and many throw rocks through your windows. You have one loyal friend in your life but he lives a couple of towns over and, though he used to visit and give you a chance to sit on your porch and enjoy the fresh air -- because there is strength in numbers -- he rarely visits anymore.
You try to live your life. You go to the coffee shop but people still scorn you. You hire a police officer to make sure that the people walking through your yard are not carrying rocks. You don't stop them. You just want to make sure that they don't throw rocks through your windows.
Occasionally you have to take action against a neighbor who bursts into your living room and smashes your TV. It's not that they want to steal it -- they just don't want you to have it. Then, yesterday, the insult of all insults:
That good friend of yours from a couple of towns over comes to your neighborhood ... but he doesn't come to see you. He stops next door and drops off a cheesecake to the guy who lives there -- the guy who throws the most rocks at your windows. It's not any cheesecake, though, it's a huge Godiva chocolate cheesecake in a beautiful gold box with a hand-tied ribbon.
How's that make you feel?
Israel has been on the front lines of a holy war, waged by her neighbors against the world since the nation's founding in 1948. Israel has endured more relentless attacks than any other nation on earth.
Her Muslim neighbors vow to never recognize her right to exist, let alone the right of her citizens to move safely through their lands.
Recently there was controversy over the Mavi Marmara incident. In short, Israel has made a decision that requires Gaza-bound ships put into a nearby Israeli port, submit to inspection, and have the cargo delivered by land, at Israel's expense, to its destination.
It's not a terribly onerous blockade. It doesn't prevent any legal cargo from entering Gaza -- just the rocket launchers and bomb components that are used to kill Israel's citizens.

Excerpts From Peter Schiff's Endorsement Of Rick Torres:
"It's not just about electing a Republican; it's about electing the right Republican. There are a lot of Republicans in Congress right now and most of them are part of the problem, not part of the solution. So if you really believe in the Constitution, free market capitalism, in individual liberty, in sound money, you have to vote for those things. You have to vote for someone who is committed to those things. If you think everything is okay in Washington, if you like the status quo, then go ahead and rubber stamp the convention's nominee. But if you really want real change, then you're going to have to support a candidate who will deliver that change."
"And from what I know of Rick Torres, he is the guy in this race, he is the only person in this race that has a chance of bringing those values back to Washington. That is why I support him."
"And if there was ever a year when we can beat back the establishment, and elect a candidate that will really bring back our values and principles to Washington, this is the year to do it. And don't accept the word from the party elite that no you can't win. A real grassroots campaign can win, it can win in Connecticut, and it can win 2010. And I thank everyone for coming and I wish Rick the best of luck."

Rick Torres may be considered an anomaly by some. Not only is he a Republican in a city where Democrats outweigh the GOP faithful, he's a Latino Republican.
On a warm spring morning, Torres, 51, sits at a table outside the Harborview Market, the business he owns in the neighborhood where he lives, talking about the life experiences that shaped him into the staunch conservative he is today.
Torres is working hard to secure the Republican nomination -- there are six candidates -- to unseat Democrat U.S. Rep Jim Himes in the Fourth Congressional District. It would be easier, especially in Bridgeport, to be a Democrat.
Hispanics tend to vote Democrat. And, in fact, at one point Torres himself was a Democrat. Not any more. Not after living across the street from the P.T. "I believe in me, I believe in you," Torres said.
"I don't believe in the government. The problem with the government is they don't get it right. I want to fix it and the only way to fix it is to get government out of it."
He wants, he said, to "liberate the people living in public housing ... It was intended to help, but it does the opposite. The children don't see anyone who's never been on welfare. Everyone's been on welfare so long, that's the norm for them."
Torres said he thinks there should be a homesteader plan--if you've lived in public housing for 10 years or more, it's yours. "Get them off welfare, let them earn as much as they can, and keep as much as they can," he said.
"Open the doors of education. That's what you and I take for granted. That's foreign to them.

Sarah Kramer, # 9 of Greenwich High School during the introductions at the 2010 Girls Lacrosse State Division 1 Finals at Bunnell High School, Stratford, Saturday afternoon, June 12, 2010.....
Rick Torres, candidate in Connecticut's 4th Congressional district, has highlighted what he believes to be the critical distinctions between him and his rivals in the race.
Anyone who runs for office to better our country deserves respect, only certain policies warrant support. Labels are too often misleading, which is why policies matter.
To illustrate, Torres points to a press release by rival Rob Merkle, who professes to be a fiscal conservative. In the release, Merkle claims to be a '"small business owner who strives to reduce the size, reach and burden of the federal government."
"His policies do anything but reduce the size of government," Torres notes.
"He is merely another big-government Republican." Torres points to just two of the many big government solutions
Merkle advocates:
1. In a poor attempt to 'help' the economy, Merkle praises the SBA loan program. "The Small Business Administration is a government agency which actually takes taxpayer monies and decides who to loan it to. It is another form of corporate welfare," Torres says.
2. Another of Merkle's poor attempts to revive the economy is virtually identical to the 'jobs plan' of Barack Obama. It is to "mandate" banks to make loans to small businesses. Torres points out that banks are private enterprises. "Government mandating banks to give loans to property owners resulted in the near collapse of our economy. Yet Merkle wants the government to repeat this same mistake and hopes for a different outcome."
"These policies led to the budget deficits, tax increases and unemployment we have today. We cannot spend our way out of a recession or tax our way to prosperity. Clearly, a conservative should know this," Torres asserted.
The two Democratic gubernatorial contenders - Ned Lamont and Dannel Malloy - are scheduled to debate at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the local NBC affiliate studio in West Hartford.

06/15/10 In 4th District Congressional Race, Rick Torres Goes Against The Grain

Barnum housing complex in Section 8 housing -- housing subsidized by the government -- after he father moved the family back to the U.S. from Cuba in 1967.

That's just the way it is and there's no other way to say it better."

He admits that some of his stands are not always popular with his customers, but that doesn't bother him, Torres said, as he points to a man sitting inside.

"That guy, he's a Socialist." Going against the grain, the accepted way to do things, the easiest way, is not something new for Torres.

The GOP candidate for mayor in 2003, he was ousted in 2007 as chairman of the city's Republican Town Committee after he urged GOP members to switch to Democrat to vote in a primary for mayoral candidate Chris Caruso. Torres said it was the best way to get rid of an entrenched Democratic machine.

As a high school senior, he was offered full college scholarships, so long as he played football or basketball. At age 18, though, his shoulder was shot, his knees were shot, his back hurt. Torres just wanted an education.

He founded himself at the Milford Academy, and bartered the carpentry skills he'd acquired at Bullard -Havens Technical High School to pay his way at the post grad prep school rather than play football, which would have also gotten him a free ride.

Torres found himself the winner of the popularity polls at Bullards-Havens, where he captained the basketball team, played football and was elected as the prom king.

He's also found himself ostracized, and was ready to quite Milford Acemdy after two month when none of his fellow students, all much wealtheir than he was, would even speak to him.

He's had success in business-his Harborview Market received outpouring support from the Black Rock community when he needed zoning variances to stay open. He's also had disappointments-a deal that would have brought a car manufacturer to the city fell through.

Today, Torres said, he is comfortable speaking to any sort of group.

"It's really cool. I can give a talk at the highest level of corporate office," he said, "and then I can go into an inner-city black church and give it again and then I can go into a Hispanic church and give it in Spanish."

Torres said he'd talked to millionaires in Greenwich, and students at Housatonic Community College.

"I give the same talk about small government and free markets," he said. "It's really a decent message."

Until the last election, the district was held by Christopher Shays, who was defeated by Jim Himes.

"I'm not a Chris Shays style representative," Torres said. "I'm not a moderate. I'm a conservative through and through."

He knows that means the Republican machine is supporting Rep. Dan Debicella, who follow the Shays ideology.

But, Torres says there are many people in Fairfield County who agree with him and will support him in the upcoming Republican primary.

His goal is to raise "at least" $300,000 for the primary.

And he has no doubt that not only will he win a Republican primary, he'll win back the seat for the party.

1/29/09 Greenwich Post: Raising a glass: Democrats toast to victory, change

Photo: Charlene Abdal, assistant to the first selectman, gives Ned Lamont a hug during the Democrats’ celebration Saturday

by Ken Borsuk, Greenwich Post

L’escale restaurant was wall-to-wall Democrats Saturday night and the party faithful was in the mood to celebrate.

At what Selectwoman Lin Lavery pledged would be the first annual “Greenwich Celebrates Change” event, more than 280 people arrived to mark what they hoped was a new era in Washington after a successful fall for local Democrats. Not only did President Barack Obama become the first Democrat presidential candidate to win the town’s vote since Lyndon Johnson did in his 1964 landslide victory, but former Democratic Town Committee Chairman Jim Himes defeated 21-year incumbent Republican Christopher Shays to become the congressional representative from the 4th District.

But those in attendance stressed the night was not just about last fall’s victories and that people from all political persuasions were in the crowd.

“People are out here tonight to celebrate change and to raise a glass to the President of the United States and to Jim Himes,” Ms. Lavery told the Post. “We couldn’t be more thrilled. People worked very hard to make it happen. It’s a wonderful moment in history.”

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Dave Roberson called the crowd “amazing” and praised the work of Cathy Farricker and Laura Grad for making the event happen. Upon his arrival, Mr. Himes joked to Mr. Roberson that Greenwich Democats had “gone upscale” since he left town..

..Ned Lamont, who challenged and defeated Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Ct.) in 2006 in the primary, spoke at the event as well, as did state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal who said the Greenwich victory for President Obama is “the beginning of a trend.”

Mr. Lamont, a former selectman, joked that being a Greenwich Democrat used to be like rooting for the Chicago Cubs but Saturday the party was turning people away at the door because there wasn’t room for them….

09/19/08 Greenwich Politics: Pelosi stumps for Himes, talks middle class struggles

Nancy Pelosi came out to support Jim Himes in his race against U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays. Susanne Gonzalez, right, and her husband Richard played host to the event. —

(Ken Borsuk / Greenwich Post photo)

QUOTE:

“I think people see a sense of urgency that they may not have been fully aware of two years ago,” Nancy Pelosi said. “The American people are always optimistic and hopeful that some good thing can happen, but it isn’t happening.”

THE STORY:

Cos Cob resident Jim Himes’ campaign to unseat longtime incumbent Rep. Christopher Shays (R-4th) got a boost this past weekend from one of the most powerful Democrats in the country, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Ms. Pelosi, who represents the 8th District in California and was elected speaker in 2007, said that Mr. Himes’ election is a “high priority” not only because the Democrats wanted another seat in the Congress, but also because of the quality of the leadership he would bring. Ms. Pelosi previously made an appearance in 2006 for Democratic candidate Diane Farrell, who lost in a close race to Mr. Shays....

...Ms. Pelosi said when Congress discussed the concerns of America’s families, they were talking about families like the Gonzalezes “sitting around a table asking how they’re going to make ends meet and pay for health care that Chloe so desperately needs and the family should have.”

Ms. Pelosi said Mr. Shays’ comments were “almost unbelievable” and repeated a claim she made four years ago when campaigning for Ms. Farrell by calling Mr. Shays’ “an enabler for President Bush” and his policies....

....“My opponent is pointing to growth rate when he says the economy is fundamentally strong and he forgets to mention that for years now American growth has not been shared,” Mr. Himes said on Saturday. “It has done well by the very top of our society, but it has not made it in to the vast bulk of living rooms and kitchens in the United States of America and in the 4th Congressional District.”

State Senator Andrew McDonald (D-27), a Himes supporter, is a longtime friend of the family’s and he helped arrange the appearance. Mr. Gonzalez joked that Ms. Pelosi’s visit was his “15 minutes of fame” and said the family was honored to meet her and have her hear their story.

“It’s not every day that you get to meet someone of her stature,” Mr. Gonzalez said.

This year, Himes has the advantage of a strong presidential candidate, Barack Obama, at the top of the Democratic ticket, and a generalized intense dislike among the electorate for the Bush administration and its various failings.
In a recent interview with Minuteman editors and reporters, Himes noted that he opposed America's involvement in the Iraq war, which Shays has strongly supported.
But Himes' main focus was on the economy. He noted that people are concerned and insecure whatever their income level or station in life. Himes, a Greenwich resident, is a former investment banker with Goldman Sachs who now works for a "green" not-for-profit agency that builds affordable houses.
... Ever since the reapportionment following the 2000 census, the Fourth District has included more towns in northern Fairfield County that are Republican and rather conservative.
Shays has been in Congress since defeating Democrat Christine Neidermeier in an election to fill the vacancy created by the death of Congressman Stewart McKinney, father of current State Sen. John McKinney.
Like Shays, Stewart McKinney was a Republican moderate whose views closely matched the district.
With both Himes and Shays having their own advantages going into the campaign, turnout will be the key. Stay tuned.

In Fairfield County, Volunteers Abound

Darien News-Review

...Fairfield County rises to many challenges, and in the midst of a national trend of volunteerism descending over the past three years, Southern Connecticut once again is standing tall, increasing its number of volunteers, Jennifer Flatow, volunteer coordinator of Greenwich's Family Centers said.

While the number of volunteers nationwide decreased from 65 million to 60.8 between 2005 and 2007, Flatow pointed out, Family Center's time-givers increased to nearly 2,000 people ranging from ages 10 to 70, with hits highest concentration of volunteers working within the education program. The rise of 100 new volunteers may not be significant on the grand scale, Flatow said, but for the center to increase its numbers is still significant.

"If you work for an organization that is a nonprofit in a community with other nonprofits, you tend to see a trend in the opposite direction." Flatow said with a sense of pride. "People here are invested in their community." .....

Greenwich Connecticut Encounters India In Terrence McNally's comedy A Perfect Ganesh
"Here I am, a god walking amongst men." Bob Gruen is not being boastful; he is just describing his role as the Indian elephant-god Ganesha in Terrence McNally's A Perfect Ganesh. "He is not an all-knowing god but one who is dumbfounded by the behavior of human beings. He listens, feels for them, and tries to understand their foibles. In this play, India is a mirror that allows people to see into themselves - things they couldn't see at home in their day-to-day lives. They bump up against something radically different. It shakes them up. Who the hell am I? It's the internal journey we're on that McNally is bringing onto the stage.".....
... A Perfect Ganesh is the funny and deeply moving story of two middle aged suburban women from Greenwich, Conn., traveling without their husbands for the first time, whose encounter with India profoundly shakes them and ...
...They are an ill-matched pair of friends. Margaret is determined to be in control and to be respected as a seasoned traveler and a cultivated woman, despite her apprehension about flying and visiting India for the first time. She has read the guide books from cover to cover. Her naïve and boisterous companion, Katharine, on the other hand, is ready to plunge blindly into this new world and be enlightened. Their conflicting ways of dealing with the experience exasperates Margaret, strains the relationship, and leads to laughable and revealing situations. Each, however, has her own unresolved tragedy, and before they are through they will have to uncover their hearts and reach out to one another in unexpected ways. .....
....Terrence McNally is among the leading dramatists in America today. His many plays include Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Love! Valor! Compassion!, Ragtime, and Master Class. He has won four Tony awards. He claims A Perfect Ganesh to be one of his favorite plays.....

No Place Like Dome

New York Post
As the Post first reported earlier this week, fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger is about to list his Plaza apartment for $50 million.
Since then, we've gotten the skinny on the high-end crib with the fat asking price in the still surreal, high-end Manhattan market.
Located in the northeast dome on the 18th and 19th floors of the famed building, the eight-room duplex features amazing Central Park views and ceiling heights up to 20 feet. There's also a north-facing private terrace (one of only two terraces in the building) off the master bedroom where you can scream, "I'm king of the world!" and few will argue.
The approximately 6,000-square-foot residence, which includes four bedrooms, 4½ baths, a formal dining room, large living room, library and gourmet kitchen, was originally two separate units that have recently been combined by a staircase.

But it's still considered raw space with just the essential walls and utilities, according to his broker Deborah Grubman of the Corcoran Group.

"It's basically at a point where anyone can do their own finishes," Grubman told us. "It's got incredibly interesting architectural features - and exposures - that make it unlike any other apartment."....

... has another property he wants to sell. He's recently lowered the price of his 20,000-square-foot mansion in leafy Greenwich, Conn., to $24.9 million after first listing it last February for $27.9 million.

More Than 300,000 Bottles of Water Donated to Support Displaced Citizens and Volunteer Relief Workers Along the Gulf Coast
GREENWICH, CT. - September 3, 2008 - Nestle Waters North America has donated 302,568 half-liter bottles of Ozarka(R) and Ice Mountain(R) Brand Natural Spring Water to citizens and disaster relief workers affected by this week's Category 2 Hurricane Gustav. AmeriCares and the American Red Cross, along with local, on-the-ground agencies, are distributing the donations to affected areas along the Gulf Coast. Evacuees and disaster relief volunteers will receive the bottled water.
Hurricane Gustav made landfall on Monday, causing power outages, flooding, water-supply problems, and structural damage. In Louisiana, nearly 800,000 homes are without power. Preliminary damages are estimated at between $2 billion and $10 billion.
"Many residents of the Gulf Coast are returning to homes without power and need clean water to drink and cook," said AmeriCares emergency response manager Jonathan Hodgdon, who is working on the relief effort from Baton Rouge. "It's not as simple as running to the store to pick up bottled water because many supermarkets are closed and cars are running out of gasoline."
"We are proud to partner with AmeriCares and the Red Cross to provide clean, portable water," said Alex McIntosh, director of corporate citizenship for Nestle Waters North America. "Our partners have stepped up with excellent logistics support to get bottled water and other essential items to people affected by the storm."
NestlE Waters is committed to supplying clean water to citizens in need. The company has provided millions of bottles of water to residents and relief workers affected by natural disasters, including Hurricane Dolly, the tornadoes and subsequent floods that struck the Midwest earlier this year, as well as last year's California wildfires and Hurricane Katrina.
About Nestle Waters North America
NestlE Waters North America Inc. is the number one bottled water company in the U.S. Its family of 15 well-known brands includes Poland Spring(R) Brand Natural Spring Water, the leading spring water brand in America. Based in Greenwich, Conn., Nestle Waters North America's 9,000 employees provide bottled water products to consumers across the country, including Ozarka(R) Natural Spring Water and Nestle (R) Pure Life(R).
