04/03/08 - The Senior Center Is Vital To The Town, Because Over One-Fourth Of Age 70-Plus Households Will Have Incomes Under $25,000

Historically, senior centers have served needs of the older (age 76 and up) and less well-off segments of society across America.

QUOTE:

"We have all the information from the consultants and we are waiting for a meeting with Mr. Tesei," Town of Greenwich Commission on Aging led by Executive Director Sam Deibler said.

"The decision about the Senior Center site will be coming from him."

STORY:

Future Senior Center to be Far Cry from Old Town Hall

Via Connecticut Post

Men and women in the golden years were smartly line-dancing to prompting from an instructor at the Senior Center in the Old Town Hall on Greenwich Avenue Monday.

Two steps fore; two steps aft; two steps to the right, two steps to the left - the instructor directed as a recorded waltz filled the lunch, activity, lecture, exercise all-purpose dog-eared room on the first floor.

Across the hall, in upholstered chairs of a certain age, a few seniors lounged in the books on their laps. A TV was on and others gazed at the program on the screen.

The library and TV room opened on another room with card tables, and stacks of boxed board games nearby. A foursome was playing bridge.

Downstairs, a pool table was not in use. Access to the lower level was via steep stairs of a rickety elevator that could win a prize for being the slowest on planet earth.

The short tour of the current Senior Center put into focus the subject of a recent survey conducted by Gerontological Services Inc. of Santa Monica, Calif. Its subject: Greenwich's Future Senior Center.

The survey was done for the Town of Greenwich Commission on Aging led by Executive Director Sam Deibler. The Senior Center, now a Town Department, is under his baton.

Conducted last January among 4,000 men and women 60-to-80 years of age, the survey was triggered by the fact that the Greenwich Senior Center is at a pivotal moment in its history, according to Deibler.

For these reasons:

1. The older adult population is growing and will continue to do so over at least the next 25 years. By 2030, some 23,573 in Greenwich will be over 60. Projections are 9,676 will be between 60 and 69; 8,793 between 70 to 74; 5,103 ages 75 and over.

2. At the same time....

03/20/08 - "I just feel it's an important issue to bring forward again," First Selectman Peter Tesei said

Mary Ann Morrison, the CEO and president of the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce, said the proposal was a reasonable compromise.

.... "Mr. Tesei still sees the value and importance of keeping the police officers at the three major intersections on Greenwich Avenue, and let's hope it stays that way."

Ave. traffic light plan revised

Greenwich Time - Staff Writer

After getting the red light from the Representative Town Meeting last year, a proposal to install traffic signals on Greenwich Avenue is back, this time with some changes.

The lights would be installed on Greenwich Avenue at Havemeyer Place, Elm and Lewis streets, and would sit atop antique-style lampposts similar to the existing streetlamps. Police officers would still direct traffic during the day, and the traffic lights would be used at night and on Sundays....

... "I don't want to lose Greenwich, what little is left of the old town," said Joan Caldwell, a lifelong resident who is moderator pro tempore of the RTM.

Caldwell said traffic lights would ruin the town's main street, "making Greenwich look like downtown White Plains."

"It is actually likely to make the town look more citified," Caldwell said.

Her colleague, Mary Pellegrino, a District 1/South Center RTM member who represents the downtown, was more direct. "I think that's rotten," Pellegrino said. "Come on, let's be practical. We're getting out of hand in this town."....

... Police Chief David Ridberg, who has long argued that having police officers direct traffic is not the best use of manpower and hurts morale....

... Selectman Peter Crumbine downplayed the change the lights might bring. "They should blend in all right," he said.

Tesei stressed that he has no intention of replacing the police officers altogether, but acknowledged he probably doesn't have much pull in the matter.

"It most likely will probably get voted down," Tesei said. "But I think it's important to have the conversation."

Greenwich lawyer and real estate developer Joseph Tranfo poses with a rendering of a hotel proposed for Benedict Place and Lewis Street.
(Bob Luckey Jr./Staff photo)

Developer's plan hinges on leasing town lot

Joseph A. Tranfo knows he is risking a good part of his family fortune on a $100 million downtown Greenwich redevelopment project that depends on getting access to a piece of town land. But the real estate lawyer-turned-developer said the risk is worth it because of what the project promises to achieve.

"There's an opportunity to create a community here," Tranfo said.

The project is to build a multistory complex of offices, a hotel, restaurant, underground parking and dozens of residences on 2 acres of prime real estate between Greenwich Avenue and Lewis and West Elm streets.

The catch, however, is that Tranfo must first acquire the right to lease from the town a 1.3-acre municipal parking lot on Benedict Place to get enough room for his plans.

Tranfo, who has already spent more than $7 million acquiring many of the other pieces he needs for the project, recently presented his ideas to the Board of Selectmen.....

... In addition to the town's financial commitment to the project, Selectman Lin Lavery said she is concerned about the four-story height of the proposed structures.

"It looks very big," she said. "I need to look at it more."

Lavery said she wonders about the proposed density and whether the new development would attract transient residents who only live there part-time.

"It might be like the Plaza Hotel in New York or the Greenwich Gables where people purchase high-end condos and don't necessarily become community members," she said....

After 40 years, DaVinci's serves its final meal

By: Michael Dinan
Source: Stamford Advocate

DaVinci's Ristorante was a year-old, failing, 40-seat pizza place on a corner of downtown's main two-way street, Greenwich Avenue, when newlyweds Lisa and Tony Vitiello began renting the space in 1966.

The couple started a family as they took over the restaurant, and Tony took up extra work as a chef in Stamford to help pay the bills and keep their business going.
'We were like any young couple starting out,' Lisa recalled yesterday as loyal customers filed into the beloved restaurant, now 125 seats with an extensive menu of Italian cuisine, for the last time.

'Leaving these people is harder than anything. I could have left the day after my husband died 11 years ago. But these people --AOEI don't want to call them 'customers,' because I don't think of them that way --AOEthey started out as strangers who came here for the food, and they've become friends.'

A Greenwich institution The Avenue and East Elm Street, known for its veal parmesan served on the bone, homemade gnocchi and fresh seafood, DaVinci's closed its doors after four decades. A bank will begin renting space in the three-story building that the Vitiellos bought 20 years ago, and could open as soon as next summer.

'It's not that we're leaving out of failure, but at the height of success,' Vitiello said as her long-serving staff uncorked bottles of wine in a bustling, elegant dining room, where natural light brings out the walls' Renaissance Era-like frescoes. 'From a business standpoint, I'm extremely comfortable with the offer we got. But from a personal standpoint, it's more emotional.'

An Italy native who grew up on an island off the coast of Naples and moved to the United States at age 9, two years after her mother died, Vitiello says she'll miss the restaurant's frequenters and staff. But she wants to spend more time with her four kids and six grandchildren: Anthony, 17, Victoria, 13, Joey, 8, Ariana, 7, John, 4 and Sofia Alexandra, three weeks.
