09/19/08 Dear Greenwich Time Editor -

To the editor:

Here's a suggested "Daily Poll" question for The Advocate to consider: Do you agree with John McCain (and our Joe Lieberman and Chris Shays) that Social Security should be privatized so it can be invested in the stock markets?

04/15/08 - Richard Duffee: "No, Jim Himes is much better; Chris Shays is a true believer in the war and the imperial presidency."

County Fair: Impeach and a Pair

fairfieldweekly.com, CT

In 2006, Richard Duffee, the Green Party candidate for Connecticut's fourth congressional district, dropped out and endorsed Democrat Diane FarrellChris Shays. This year, Duffee says he's running again and has no plans to back likely Democratic nominee Jim Himes since he won't run on a promise to impeach George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Impeachment, says Duffee is more vital in post-Bush 2009 than it was in 2007....

....But back to the issue at hand: The impeachment of the president (which all of a sudden seems reasonable and doable). Himes, the former chair of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee, says "as a matter of principle, we should hold any officials who've broken the law to task. God knows, Chris Shays has taken no action. But for a guy like me who won't have Bush and Cheney leaving office by the time I get to Washington, I don't see it as a worthy use of time."....

....Himes, hoping to throw that knock-out blow Farrell almost delivered twice to the 15-full-term congressman (she got 48 percent of the vote in 2004 and 2006), doesn't see Duffee as a potential spoiler. "I think the people in this district can see that there is a clear choice between me, someone who cares deeply about the Constitution, and Chris Shays, someone who's voted to help destroy it.

04/12/08 - Chris Shays Is Allways Saying Something Ignorant About How We Should Stay In Iraq And Spend Billions Every Month

Yep, Neocon Chris Shays (R, CT) at a town hall meeting this morning in Greenwich, Connecticut actually said that General Petraeus is "our Peace Corps general." Now Shays is so whacky to begin with, and his reasoning so goofy that I couldn't possibly explain to you why he made that statement. But as a former Peace Corps volunteer myself, I'm offended. And although Shays was also a Peace Corps volunteer in Fiji in the late '60's, he should be ashamed of himself.

It is unfathomable to me what sort of mentality could possibly conflate the killing, bombing and destruction of the Iraq War with the efforts of Peace Corps volunteers in developing countries around the world to improve the lives of ordinary people. Does Republican Chris Shays even understand the irony of calling a general of the United States Army the "Peace Corps" general? I suppose that if Ronald Reagan can name an intercontinental nuclear missile "The Peacemaker", then I suppose another Republican conservative like Shays can make an equally idiotic statement like calling the top military commander in the Iraqi theater of war the "Peace Corps general". But to decent, dedicated, hard-working Peace Corps volunteers around the world, past and present, his expression is inexplicable and reprehensible.

I think that was the dumbest thing Chris Shays said today. He said lots of other stupid things, though. For example, he said, "the Iraqis are beginning to like us." That reminded me of the joke about General Custer: Do you know what Custer's last words were? "I think they're friendly."

But one can be humorous about Shays for only a brief moment. Let's remember that April is on pace to be the deadliest month for American troops in seven months. The number of attacks on American forces in Baghdad has reached a six-month high. In the week after Chris Shays returned from his twentieth trip to Iraq, 125 American troops were wounded. But, hey, "the Iraqis are beginning to like us."

Right, Chris. Got it.

Let's hope that Returned Peace Corps volunteers in Connecticut and around the country give Shays an earful for his idiotic and offensive characterization.

(Let's also hope that Connecticut's Returned Peace Corps volunteer organization comes to its senses and doesn't hold its annual picnic at Shays' house this summer).

03/29/08 - Reader Contributed Content: An Open Letter To The Community - 63 cents

Dear Greenwich Residents,

Last week, Chris Shays returned from his 20th trip to Iraq. And just like after his 6th trip in 2004, and his 11th trip in 2006, he once again said the "progress" he saw meant it was too soon to bring our troops home - over 900 of whom have been killed since the surge began. Meanwhile, the economic problems we face here at home because of the disastrous fiscal policies of George Bush and Chris Shays continue to grow more and more serious.

After all these long, painful years of supporting failed Bush policies, Chris Shays is still stuck in the past.

The good news is this: you can finally turn the page on the Bush/Shays era:

http://www.himesforcongress.com/turnthepage

Please become invested in what Jim Himes doing in this campaign - in repairing the damage that Chris Shays and George Bush have caused, and refocusing our priorities by bringing a stronger progressive majority to Congress.

Here's how you can do it, today.

There are only a few days left before the critical fund raising deadline on Monday - days left for you to show how much you want to see real leadership and meaningful change in Congress.

The Jim Himes campaign has set a goal of 100 new contributors by midnight Monday. Can you help us reach that goal by contributing $20.08 for change in 2008 today? That's only sixty-three cents per week until election day:

http://www.himesforcongress.com/turnthepage

There are so many things they want to do in this campaign.

They can put a final and decisive end to the era of George Bush, Dick Cheney, and Chris Shays. They can put America back on track to regaining our lost
Together, we can do all of these things. We can finally turn the page on eight years of inaction in the face of the historic corruption and mendacity of the Bush Administration, and towards something new and better.

Contribute $20.08 today for your hopes in 2008, and say it loud and clear - it's time to turn the page:

http://www.himesforcongress.com/turnthepage

Regards,

from a concerned citizen

PS. For only 63 cents a week from now until election day, you can help turn the page on Chris Shays. Contribute before the reporting deadline on Monday night at midnight.

02/18/08 - Bill Clark attacks everything with a mix of extraordinary genius and naive incompetence, and it is often difficult to tell which is which

The Silly Season Gets Sillier

by Bill Clark

Local resident Lee Whitnum has led a colorful life. She allegedly had an affair with Senator John Kerry back in the early 1990s, which seems to have been the defining moment in her life so far. She later wrote a book under the pseudonym Lee Roystone, Hedge Fund Mistress, that was loosely based on the Kerry days; it had to be recalled and reissued in a different form after a threat of legal action. Lately she has been working as a substitute teacher in the Stamford school system. Oh, yes, and she's running against Chris Shays for Congress.

Your scribe first met her in the local library soon after the first printing of HFM

The book itself was interesting, but hardly great literature. The title pretty much gives away the rather thin plot. No doubt Ms. Whitnum had fun writing it, but apparently sailed a little too close to the winds of libel and thus had to tone it down for the reissue.

Now she wants everyone to forget that part of her life, including the pictures of her and Kerry that she posted on her web site a few years ago. But she has reckoned without the power of the Internet. Even though her site explicitly stated that she expected people to ask her permission before helping themselves to her material, she failed to understand that once something gets into the public domain it takes on a life of its own. Such was the case in 2004, when Kerry was running for the presidency, and such is the case in 2008, when Whitnum is running for congress. In both instances her photos were and continue to be so widely reproduced that whatever shreds of ownership she may have once have believed she had have long since been blown away by the winds of cyberspace.

So who is this candidate for elected office from our area? Take a look for yourself, gentle reader:

John Kerry Scrapbook

This collage comes not from Whitnum's web site (which is now all but blank), but from one of many third-party sites that have posted the archived content she herself once posted for all to see. You will notice that there are no photo credits, no copyright indications, or anything else that might call for restraint on the material's dissemination. In fact, Ms. Whitmun herself was fairly unrestrained when she wrote and assembled and posted it all on the Internet.

Well, gentle reader, there are many in Town who feel that it's time for Chris Shays to retire - or be retired - but your scribe is not sure that Lee Whitnum is the one to make it happen. But at least we can thank her for generating additional interest in an election that is still over eight months away. A lot can happen in that time, and your scribe, for one, will follow events with great curiosity to see what will unfold next.
came out. She gave him her card, and urged him to read her book, the title of which he at first thought was "Hedge Fund Mysteries". His parochial ears apparently were not attuned to what she was actually saying, and in retrospect he had to wonder why she seemed so proud of the real title of her self-admittedly autobiographical book. While she was never Kerry's "mistress" - they were both unmarried at the time - she seemed to relish proclaiming the word loudly enough for all in the immediate vicinity to hear it. All, of course, except for your scribe, who only realized what she had said when he went to the card catalogue and discovered his mistake.
