11/04/08 Greenwich Residents Scott And Patricia Shields Are Now Waiting To Report To Prison

A self-proclaimed "9/11 hero" who concocted tales of rescuing victims with his golden retriever is being sued by the feds for more than $35,000 in relief funds he scammed from FEMA.

A lawsuit filed yesterday by the US Attorney's Office in Manhattan accuses Scott Shields and his sister, Patricia, of falsely claiming to need the money for rent on a Rector Street apartment while living in Greenwich, Conn.

The feds are asking for three times the stolen amount plus $11,000 for each of three bogus filings. Both siblings pleaded guilty to fraud, were sentenced to eight months behind bars, and are now waiting to report to prison.

Scott Shields, 57, won accolades after claiming he and his now-deceased dog, Bear, made "the only live finds" at Ground Zero. He repeated the lie in a self-published 2003 book titled "Bear, Heart of a Hero."

The Post exposed his lies in a 2006 exclusive that also revealed he filed for bankruptcy protection four months before 9/11

11/04/08 READER SUBMITTED COMMENTS: Sarah needs a clue

Regrettably, I peeked at the "Our Joe" web site for the first time. There is very little there in sustance.

"Our Joe", is really not NEWS. It is a blog of uneducated opinion, much of which proves its writers don't have a clue about much of anything..... including the basics of politics, religion, or vocabulary.

Sarah Littman makes references to why she is supporting Obama, stating this canidate supports Embryonic Stem Cell Reasearch.

What she fails to acknowlege, is that the current administration supports ESCR, but they do not support abortion as a means to acquire cells. However, cells can be taken from an aborted fetus because abortion is legal. Stem cells are also obtained while the fetus is viable, in vitro. This would be important if a sibling had Diabetes, Cancer, or 25 other diseases. Stem cells can be obtained and saved,POST EMBRYONIC, at birth, and is now a highly reccomended practice. The decision only requires a signature before delivery. The fact: McCain supports this.

Finally, in the cases of infertility, it is common for 7 eggs to be removed, fertilized outside the womb, and 3-4 are placed back, in vitro. The remaining fertilized eggs are then frozen or thrown away. These are LIVE embryos MEANING they have all the genetic DNA of both parents, with millions of highly specialized cells rapidly changing. Most of us consider this to be nothing less of a miracle. The fact: this is when life begins.

Obama supports abortion. For most of the women who have abortion, studies indicate these woman have more than one, and for them, it is simply an "oops" type of birth control. However, the fact is it is murder.

Ms. Littman, learn your scientific facts before you become "angry", and accept that there is NO DIFFERENCE between Pro-Life and Pro-Choice. I hope embroynic stem cell reasearch will help your daughter, though it doesn't have to be at the expense of a potential life.

Learn before you write.

COMMENT:

Dear Pro Life,

As You Probably Know, Like Sarah, I Also Support Obama In This Election.

However, Like You Many People In My Church Are Dissatisfied With How The Country Has Been Run During The Last 5 Years, But The Are Voting For John McCan't Because Of The Abortion Issue.

Personally, I Probably Agree More With Sarah Than You, But As A Father Of An Aborted Child I Must Admit That From Time To Time I Have For Some Reason Experienced Some Feelings Of Sadness Over This. I Still Remember The Date Of The Medical Proceedure From More Than 20 Years Ago.

So My Opinions Are Some What In Flux.

As For Stem Cells I Also Agree With Sarah More Than You, Because I Hate To See People Suffer When There Is A Possibility Of A cure.
Like You I Sincerely Hope Embryonic Stem Cell Research Will Help
Sarah's Daughter And Others Who Suffer Needlessly.

However, I Agree with You That The "Our Greenwich" Website Has Been Misused For Joe Pisani's Personal Gain And His Attempts At Revising His Legacy.

Joe Repeatedly Refuses To Simply Say That He Was Wrong And That He Should Not Have Censored An Investigative Report He Commissioned On The Martha Moxley Murder.

Not to mention The Many Other Times That He Censored Weaker Voices In Greenwich Society.

The Reason Greenwich Has A "20 Year Old Mystery Driver Who Killed Some And Never Was Charged" Is That Joe Pisani Was Complacent In The Town Of Greenwich For Three Decades.

Show Me One Other Town In Connecticut That Doesn't Release The Names Of Drivers Who Kill Someone, Speeds Away And Crashes Into A Telephone Pole Way Down The Road.

This Is Joe Pisani's Legacy.

He Made The Forth Estate Of Greenwich A Weak And Complacent Media That Is Spoon Fed By The Powers That Be In Greenwich.

Why Can't The Very Moralistic Joe Pisani Say

I Am Sorry To Martha Moxley's Family?

Why Can't Joe Apologize To The Others He Hurt And Censored In Greenwich.

Why Can't Joe Pisani Tell Bill Clarke I Was Wrong To Reject All Of Your Letters To The Editor?

Does Joe Really Think That An Over Hyped Party Is Going To Erase His Legacy?

There Is A Reason That No Other Respectable Newspaper Would Hire Joe Pisani After He Was Fired By The Greenwich Time.

In Fact, In The 180 Days After Joe Pisani Was Fired From The Greenwich Time The Circulation Shot Up 22%.

Maybe This Was All Of The Three Decades Of People That The Arrogant Pisani Had Pissed Off Returning To The Newspaper After He Was Shown The Door.

11/03/08 Letter To The Greenwich Citizen Editor

Mullen Extraordinary In Multiple Ways

To the Editor:

Congratulations to Tony Mullen, Greenwich Public School teacher extraordinaire.

In April, Tony was honored as one of the six 2008 Distinguished Teachers in Greenwich. From these six Distinguished Teachers, he was then chosen to represent Greenwich in the Connecticut Teacher of the Year competition. Among contestants from 166 school districts across Connecticut, Tony has now been named one of the four finalists! This is a true testament to the commitment, passion and effectiveness he brings to the job.

All of the awards and honors aside, the best part about Tony Mullen and his teaching skills is that, on a daily basis, he is improving the educational skill set of our town's children.

Thank you, Tony. Best of luck.

11/03/08 One The Eve Of An Election Greenwich Time Editors And Reporters Take The Day Off And Put Up Stamford Advocate News Stories

Billi Kid's sticker graffiti illustration of Sarah Palin is seen last week on the wall of the former Yale & Towne lock factory on Henry Street in Stamford.
(Chris Preovolos/Stamford Advocate photo)

Palin likeness appears on wall
STAMFORD - A tongue-in-cheek illustration of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has popped up in, of all places, the South End.

It is a rare sighting of sticker graffiti, a form of street art that uses adhesive paper to print images or messages.

In Stamford, the drawing was stuck on the brick facade of the old Yale & Towne factory on Henry Street. It depicts Palin in a blue bikini and heels, muscled and grinning, saying, "Take That Billi Kid!"

Billi Kid is the artist's pseudonym. Last month, Blog Stamford linked to the Palin caricature and other samples of Billi Kid's work that have appeared in public spaces around the world. He also was featured in galleries and street art exhibits....

Elizabeth Migliore, 41, of 28 Sherman Ave., was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and threatening following vandalism of a motor vehicle on Sherman Avenue on Thursday night, police said.

The car's owner told police that he believed one of his tenants had scratched the right side of his car, police said. Police questioned Migliore, who denied vandalizing the car and yelled a threat to the car's owner, according to the report.

Migliore was placed under arrest and taken to police headquarters, police said. She was released on a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Nov. 14.

Big turnout expected Tuesday
NORWALK
-Will Greenwich get swept up by the prevailing political winds of change or will it buck the trend and deliver for Republicans as it has so many times in the past?

The Rev. Lindsay Curtis, president of the Norwalk branch of the NAACP, said voters have enough time during regular polling hours, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"I do think that there is some responsibility on the voter to be at the polls by 8 p.m.," Curtis said.

His said his concern is for voters who may be stuck in line outside a polling station.

"If they are in the lineup at 7:59:59, they should be allowed to vote, even if they only get to vote at 10 p.m.," Curtis said.

....Art Scialabba, chairman of Norwalk's Republican Town Committee, said he expects the system to run smoothly Tuesday, in part because there aren't as many people to vote for as there were in the 2007 municipal election.

"Last election, it was a much larger ballot. We were voting for mayor and school board; it was two pages long," Scialabba said. "Tuesday, you have to choose five names and answer two questions. It will only take a second to insert (the ballot) and then you are out the door."

Gail Wall, chairwoman of Norwalk's Democratic Town Committee, said Bysiewicz has been preparing for a large turnout.

"She has been working very hard for the last few months to make sure everything will work well," Wall said.

Former critics now praise state voter system
Karen Lyons has not been the biggest booster of Connecticut's new centralized voter system, a database accessible to registrars statewide to help them prevent voter fraud.

Lyons, Norwalk's Republican registrar of voters, and her Democratic counterpart defied a requirement a few years ago to participate in the system, saying it was unreliable.

But the kinks have been worked out, Lyons said.

"They're smokin' now," she said.

It's the kind of response Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat, wants to hear.
Bysiewicz's office and the state Information Technology Department have been working for the past few months to upgrade the system.

There were also several booths dedicated to jewelry, including necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets made from jade and turquoise to peridot and crystal.

Terry Burtzlaff, of the New York based, Museum Style Bases, was selling rare pieces of minerals from all over the world, including a piece of blue azurite from Arizona, costing $125 and another piece that was crystallized, from Namibia which cost $450......

11/03/08 Democrats see chance to widen majority in state legislature

By The Associated Press

HARTFORD — Democratic House Speaker James Amann thinks the minority Republicans in the Connecticut legislature have a lot to worry about on Election Day.

"The tsunami is coming, they know it," he said. "It's going to be the biggest landslide since Watergate."Democrats already hold a veto-proof majority in the House of Representatives.

Given the popularity of presidential candidate Barack Obama in Connecticut and voter displeasure with the Bush administration, some hope to secure the same level of supremacy in the state Senat

... of the state Democrats, said he thinks Democrats can pick up more seats, even in Republican strongholds such as Greenwich. "Democrats are running some pretty strong races," he said. Republicans are trying to convince voters that such Democratic ...

...."For more than 30 years Democrats have controlled the Connecticut state House. Thirty years of a Democratic majority has gotten us higher taxes, jobs lost and a growing state deficit," reads the announcer.

"After 30 years, don't you think it's about time to change the state House?"Beth Rotman, executive director of Connecticut's Citizens Election Fund, said whether or not incumbents lose on Tuesday will not determine whether the new public campaign financing initiative is a success.

"Overall, we're going to judge success by whether we're able to make things more competitive and whether the program really incentivizes participation," she said.

Two public hearings have been scheduled for Nov. 19 and Dec. 3 to get feedback from the public and candidates on the first year of the public financing initiative.

"I think the point for the program is to make sure candidates have the opportunity to run clean, without being beholden to special interests," Rotman added, "and that candidates that want to run, who don't have access to large donors, are still able to run."

Getting Tired Of Joe Pisani's Groupies At Our Greenwich

Simple Question. Why is Mr. Greenwich, Joe Pisani, always in Greenwich? He lives in Orange and works in NY. Why do the people in Greenwich and Stamford give a rats ass about this guy? And by people, I mean a bunch of worthless women writers who are trying to create absolutely nothing from absolutely nothing.

Don't insult my intelligence. Joe Pisani is far from Mr. Anything. He has a FEMALE FAN CLUB, the majority of which doesn't represent the town of Greenwich or those of us who live here.

These women: Joy, Suzy, Kristen, and the likes, are "JOE GROUPIES" The question is why??? Can't they come up with real news...news beyond Pisani parties and the gorgeousness of his family? Are their lives so incomplete? Or is it that they can't let go of sophomoric fantasies? Do they wear " What Would Joe Do?" bracelets too?

Greenwich is Greenwich. Orange is by New Haven. New York is New York. Mr Pisani has overstayed his welcome and should be encouraged to move on. Ladies, it is time to let go. Want me to walk you through it, sweethearts......?

Newspapers follow the news. REAL NEWS. They do not obsessively follow the dishonest dumber than dumb life of one former journalist, Joe Pisani. Get a grip, ladies. The day I want to read about ONE MAN, everyday, is the day I take my own life.

ENOUGH!!!!!!!

20 Year Old Mystery Driver Who Killed Joey Is Getting Special Treatment

Mr. Editor,

I'm still waiting for the Greenwich Police to release ANYTHING on the death of Joey. I don't know his family personally, but I feel sympathetic to their need to know ANY additional facts. Closure is important.

Last month, my college news paper, "The Fairfield Mirror" wrote an article on underage drinking. There were numerous car accidents in the off-campus housing area known as the "beach". Many accidents resulted in injuries requiring medical attention. This is nothing new, but the student editor specifically PRINTS NAMES. The effect? Student accountability.

The most recent was a car-pedestrian accident. The name of the drunk driver was released immediately, as was the pedestrian's. The sophomore, who was hit by the car, transferred to Fairfield this year from UNC, to play on our ,men's soccer team. He is from England. His season was cut short because some loser decided to drive drunk. He was very close to having his 19 year old LIFE CUT SHORT. His injuries were potentially life-threatening, and not just a few minor cuts and bruises. His were neck, back, and broken bones. He condition was listed as STABLE.

There is no toxology report that takes more than 24 hours. Either the driver in Greenwich refused a breathalyzer, or not administered.. If the driver was not taken to the hospital, no blood work was done. And if the driver was taken to the hospital, that STILL DOES NOT GUARENTEE ANY TOX_SCREEN WAS DONE. Often, a court order is necessary and it is the DA's responsibility to make a call to a judge who will grant one in the middle of the night. Very few judges would deny a court order involving a death.

Local police fall short in their ability to protect innocent victims. By holding info, they contribute to the inherent negligence. In Greenwich, the name of the driver should be known to all by now. It doesn't take detective work to see the driver was either: COMPLETEY WASTED, ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL, TRYING TO LEAVE THE SCENE, OR SOME VIP in the eyes of Greenwich Police.

So, for the welfare of a grieving family, and the countless others who have suffered similar consequences, tell Greenwich Police- THIS IS A PUBLIC DOCUMENT, and should be on file PUBLICALLY. There is no "confidentiality laws" in the state of CT with the exception of premeditated murder and minors.

11/02/08 Sean Goldrick Takes Greenwich Citizen Editor Don Harrison Out Behind The Woodshed

Himes Wealth Article 'Just Plain Wrong'

To the Editor:

I have to tell you that I am appalled by your placing as the lead article on the Oct. 24 Greenwich Citizen front page the story detailing Jim Himes' savings and assets. Was that really the most important article in the entire paper?

Was it more important than the roundup of the debate roundup of the debate between Shays and Himes? Frankly, it seems a blatantly snarky attempt to demean Himes in the same manner that Lieberman (and his willing sidekick Greenwich Time) sought to smear Ned Lamont as a "Greenwich millionaire." And you didn't just print an article telling how much Himes was worth, you actually put a box on the front page with virtually every stock and bank account to his name. Was that important? Really?

I just cannot understand why a previously reputable newspaper would stoop to such a depth to expose every aspect of Himes' family worth. And to add that "Himes initially balked at answering questions about his finances" just makes it appear as if he's hiding something. Which is false.

Was there any doubt in anyone's mind that Himes had made a good bit of cash while an investment banker for a dozen years? Was that really a great revelation?

If you really think the net worth thing is so incredibly important, why don't you start asking questions (and write an article before the election) about why Shays' supposed wealth is so low? After all, Shays has been earning a six-figure income for two decades, and his wife had been making six figures as well for years in her government job with the Peace Corps. So why don't you find out just what they were spending their $300k in annual income on all these years? Is Shays really virtually broke except for his houses? But here's betting that you won't do that because the whole point was to do a hit-job on Jim Himes.

I'm really very disappointed. That article was just plain wrong. And to make it the lead article less than two weeks before the election was a dirty trick. I'm also guessing that I will never receive a reply from you or an explanation or a mea culpa (which is what's called for). And that is disappointing, too.

Sorry, Don, but it was wrong.

11/01/08 YMCA negotiating access complaint

Americans with Disabilities Act

The Greenwich Family YMCA has requested more time to respond to the demands of a local family to provide wheelchair access into their new facility.

Citing the need to confer with management at the non-profit organization, which will decide what course of action to take, Jonathan Wells, the attorney for the YMCA, said he would contact the family of Luis Gonzalez-Bunster by next week, according to Frank Peluso, the family's attorney.
Gonzalez-Bunster, who is disabled, sought to train for an upcoming triathalon at the YMCA but was unable to because the building is not accessible to the handicapped.

Peluso contacted the YMCA, at 50 E. Elm Street, Oct. 24 to demand they provide at least a temporary ramp to the Y's new state-of-the-art Olympic-size swimming pool, which opened last November and is not accessible to the handicapped. He gave the organization until Wednesday to respond or possibly be subject to legal action by the courts, he said.....

......Hats Off To Meredith Blake And The Greenwich Time For Continueing To Cover This Important Story And Publishing Letters To The Editors About This Issue.

The Other Newspapers And Citizen Journalists Of Greenwich Have Wrongly Ignored The Lack Of Handicapped Access To The New Greenwich YMCA Building.

The YMCA Came To ALL Of The Citizens Of Greenwich And Asked For Construction Variances And ALL Of This Community Said Yes You Can Have Them.

The YMCA Constantly Seeks Out Funds, Grants And Tax Dollars From ALL Members Of This Community And Therefore Should Serve ALL Members Of This Community.

The YMCA's Wrong Headed Idea That The Crippled Citizens Of Greenwich Should Be Served Last Is Abhorrent At Best.

If The YMCA Won't Stop Discriminating Against The Crippled Of Greenwich And Continue To Refuse To Instal A Temporary Ramp Then The Town Should Pull The Temporary Certificate Of Occupancy.

In No Way Can The Right Minded Citizens Of Greenwich Support The YMCA's Desire To Ignore The Needs Of The Crippled Members Of Greenwich Society.

Public Funds Should Not Go To An Organization, Like The YMCA, That Is Blatantly Discriminating Against The Handicapped.

If The YMCA Continues To Resist Accommodating The Crippled Members Of Greenwich Society, Then ALL Public Funds Should Be Pulled From The Y And Given To An Organization That Will Serve ALL Members Of Greenwich Society.

Two Thumbs Up To The Greenwich Time For Staying On Top Of This News Story As Other Media Outlets Have Taken No Interest What So Ever.

11/01/08 'Change' defined by Shays, Himes at Chamber debate - Greenwich Time

With Barack Obama lending his voice to a new radio stump ad for Democrat Jim Himes in the 4th District congressional race, Republican incumbent Christopher Shays fired back Friday with questions about Obama's Senate record and ability to work across party lines.

Invited with Himes to address the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon at the Milbrook Club, Shays called John McCain the real change agent in the race for the White House.

"Barack Obama's argument about change is why you need to elect John McCain. John McCain pulls Democrats and Republicans together and says, 'Let's get moving.' Name one thing (Obama) has changed," said Shays, who is co-chairman of McCain's campaign in Connecticut.

Shays' remarks about Obama to the business group came just days after, responding to a question from a Yale Daily News reporter about why McCain was trailing Obama in most national polls, Shays said that his longtime political ally had "lost his brand as a maverick" and "did not live up to his pledge to fight a clean campaign."

Released Thursday by the Himes campaign, the 30-second radio ad featuring Obama has been airing on a number of New York City-based stations. In front of a group of business leaders and local politicians many of whom have long been loyal to Shays, Himes was asked by a high school student in attendance where he differs from Obama on the issues.

"I think his proposal for the reform of Social Security is a bad idea," Himes said.

In a break.......

11/01/08 Police take on terror role at security drill - Greenwich Time

Several Greenwich police officers will act in an unusual role today, playing the part of terrorists in a counter-terrorism drill at the University of Bridgeport, officials said.

The event is being run by the Department of Homeland Security and will involve numerous police departments from the surrounding area, including Greenwich, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Stamford and Norwalk, according to Scott Appleby, director of Bridgeport's Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

"The scenario is based on a criminal element taking 25-50 people hostage," said Appleby....

....Lt. Gary Honulik, who got Greenwich police officers involved with the drill said six officers from the department's special response unit will participate today, including Sgt. John Thorme and Lt. Brian Briggs.

It will be first time Greenwich police participate in a Homeland Security drill......
