The 48-year-old Greenwich resident and substitute teacher openly admits she’s raw and unpolished and doesn’t always say what people want to hear, from immigration to the war in Afghanistan — particularly in comparison to her party-endorsed competition.
But, she said, her voice is the only one speaking for the people.
“You can’t buy the heart and soul and experience I bring to this campaign,” she told Hersam Acorn Newspapers last week. “And people know when you’re one of the people.”....

A Junior Olympics water-polo player who is working as a lifeguard this summer, Kelly was one of two people selected out of more than 200 Connecticut students to attend Boys Nation, a program in Washington that introduces high school seniors to the workings of the federal government.
Kelly was chosen in June to represent his home state while attending a similar program, Boys State, which teaches students about local, county and state politics by having them participate in a mock government in Willimantic.
He was chosen, along with six other Greenwich students, to participate in the Boys State after interviewing with members of American Legion Post 29 in Glenville, which sponsors the program.
The other students chosen to participate in Boys State, which was held at Eastern Connecticut State University, were Collin Peck-Gray, David Goldstein, Lee Moskowitz, Michael Drittel, Tom Sassos and Scott Marschall.....
....Another bill that he supported, abolishing the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the military, passed the legislature one day, only to get vetoed by the Boys Nation "president," a student from Texas, the next.
Despite such disappointments, Kelly said the program was a valuable learning experience. "There were so many brilliant kids there, it was incredible to get to hear their views firsthand, even if you didn't agree, he said.
"Back in Greenwich, you can sit around a debate the issues that don't always directly impact on your life," he added. "But when you talk to kids who are dealing with those issues - the Alaskan kids who support oil drilling, or the Texan kids who have twenty new students in their class every year because of immigration - then it's different," he added. "It really opens your mind and gives you something to think about."
The Boys State program was started by the American Legion in 1935 to educate students about the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Boys Nation was started in 1946. Among those attending Boys State and Boys Nation was President Clinton.

More Greenwich Time News Links For Thursday:Fire Chief Peter Siecienski said the home was not occupied when the fire was reported at 10:41 p.m. at the two-story Colonial, which is tucked away in the woods and surrounded by several large boulders on a hilltop.
The owner of the house, who town officials identified as Wayne Jervis, had been living with his family in a small guest cottage on the 4.3-acre property while their new home - scheduled for completion around Labor Day - was being built.
"They were three weeks away from moving in. It's too bad," Siecienski said Wednesday.
It took 50 firefighters about an hour to get the blaze under control, according to Siecienski, who said the fire caused the partial collapse of several sections of the 13-room home
"It was totally engulfed when they arrived," Siecienski said.
Two firefighters were treated and released from Greenwich Hospital for heat exhaustion said the chief, who pointed out that the weather was hot and muggy at the time of the fire. A third firefighter was treated at the scene for similar symptoms of heat exhaustion that Siecienski said included nausea, vomiting and cramps.
Whether its juggling her seven children, including two sets of twins under the age of 5, writing a new book, or helping launch a new line of products, the former Good Morning America co-host and Greenwich resident understands the challenges women face and the importance of taking time off.
"Women today are so incredibly overwhelmed," she said.
That is why she has recently started a summer program for women, Camp Reveille. It is a four-day and three night getaway, complete with a spa, and outdoor activities, to help rejuvenate and revitalize women ages 25 to 75 years old.
"It's just concentrated 'me time' ", she said, "It's like a time out for a woman."
The campground is situated on 100 acres of land at Camp Takajo in Naples, Maine.
During the hearing in state Superior Court, Judge John Kavanewsky Jr. said he would file a written decision at later date.....

SAN MARINO, Calif. — When Clark Rockefeller was arrested on the East Coast on charges of kidnapping his daughter, he told police he didn't remember anything about his past.
Police think otherwise and they want him to fill in the blanks that could connect him to a bag of human bones and a married couple who vanished nearly a quarter century ago in this wealthy Los Angeles suburb.
Two homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were in Boston on Wednesday to question Rockefeller about Jonathan and Linda Sohus, who vanished without a trace in 1985.
After his arrest in Baltimore, police realized Rockefeller's fingerprints matched those on an old license application submitted by Christopher Chichester — a man who lived in a guesthouse on the Sohus' property and was a target of the initial investigation.
"We have begun the interview process," Steve Whitmore, sheriff's spokesman, said Wednesday. "The hope is when we come back, we have more information involving the Sohus missing person case."
The development was the latest in an intriguing case that has repeatedly frustrated investigators since Jonathan Sohus' mother filed a missing persons report 23 years ago.
Police explored various possibilities, including that Chichester had been in love with Linda Sohus and murdered her husband in a fit of jealousy, Frank Wills, San Marino's former police chief, told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
But then Chichester disappeared, too, and Sohus' mother died in 1988 without any answers.
Lili Hadsell, a former San Marino police sergeant who took the initial missing persons report, said the mother later reported receiving postcards from Linda Sohus from Paris. She died believing her son and daughter-in-law had moved to Europe and forgotten about her.
Then, in 1994, the new owners of the Sohus house were digging a swimming pool when a backhoe uncovered human remains in three plastic bags. Investigators also found horse and chicken bones.
The badly damaged remains were those of a man believed to be Jonathan Sohus — but were never positively identified, Hadsell said. No sign of Linda Sohus was ever found.
The case eventually faded from the public eye, but investigators have searched for Chichester for years.
In 1994, homicide detectives circulated a news release that described Chichester as a con man who "surfaces in affluent neighborhoods and mingles in social circles before making friends with wealthy, influential people."
They never found him and never interviewed him, Hadsell said.
"I thought my jaw was going to hit my desk," Hadsell said Wednesday of the possible connection to the Rockefeller case in Boston. "I was absolutely shocked and very, very pleased. It was really thrilling to see that maybe we've got him and maybe we're going to come to some kind of resolution for John and Linda."
Authorities came close to Chichester in the late 1980s when he was pulled over in Greenwich, Conn., driving Sohus' truck. But by the time the Department of Motor Vehicles had confirmed it was Sohus' truck, Chichester and the vehicle had vanished.....
...When the Los Angeles detectives came to the Boston jail where Rockefeller is being held without bail, Rockefeller refused to meet with them. "He's not accepting any communications. He's not granting any interviews," said Peter Van Delft, a spokesman for the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department. Rockefeller's attorney, Stephen Hrones, said he advised his client not to speak to the Los Angeles investigators. He said Rockefeller "denies absolutely" any connection between him and the California case....

1985: John and Linda Sohus of San Marino disappear, last seen in February by Christopher Crowe Mountbatten Chichester, a man claiming to be the son of a British aristocrat and the lone tenant of their guest house. Authorities come to believe Chichester is an alias of Gerhart Streiter. Relatives and friends receive postcards from Paris signed by Linda Sohus, but investigators are unable to determine if the handwriting is the missing woman’s.
Chichester leaves the guest house in April. 1988:
A truck belonging to the Sohuses turns up 3,000 miles away in Greenwich, Conn. A man calling himself Christopher Crowe had tried to sell it to the son to a local minister. Rather than buy it, he reports it to police. Authorities determine Chichester and Crowe are the same person.
1993: A man calling himself Clark Rockefeller turns up in New York City, quickly ascending to high society and boasting of his priceless art collection.
1994: Workers digging a hole for a pool at the former Sohus property on Lorain Road in San Marino unearth a trisected skeleton wrapped in plastic bags. Authorities believe it is the body of John Sohus and want to question Chichester, described as an urbane gentleman who endeared himself to the rich.
1994: Clark Rockefeller weds Ivy League-educated consultant Sandra Boss on Nantucket. No marriage certificate is filed.
1995: The TV show “Unsolved Mysteries” airs a segment on the Sohus case, titled “Chichester - San Marino Bones.” It concludes by saying authorities want to speak with a German native named Christian Gerhard Streiter, aka Christopher Chichester, aka Christopher Crowe.
May 24, 2001: Reigh Storrow Rockefeller is born.
2006: Boss buys a $2.3 million Beacon Hill brownstone.
Jan. 17, 2007: Boss files for divorce in Suffolk Probate Court. Rockefeller is permitted supervised visits while Boss, now living in London, gets full custody of Reigh.
December 2007: The former couple’s divorce is finalized. Meanwhile in Baltimore, a man calling himself Charles “Chip” Smith and claiming to be a contract captain of luxury vessels in Chile, begins searching for a home for him and his daughter.
April 2008: Chip Smith begins renting an apartment in Baltimore.
July 2008: Chip Smith hires movers to transport his belongings from a U-Haul facility in Cambridge to his new house at 618 Ploy St., Baltimore. Clark Rockefeller purchases $300,000 in gold bullion from an Arlington dealer.
July 27 12:45 p.m. - During a supervised visit with his daughter in front of 5 Marlborough St. in Boston, according to police, Rockefeller pushes a social worker and takes Reigh away in a waiting SUV.
Aug. 2: Rockefeller is caught in Baltimore and Reigh is found safe inside an apartment.
Aug. 4: Rockefeller waives his right to extradition in Baltimore.
Aug. 5: Rockefeller is held without bail in Boston Municipal Court on charges of kidnapping, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and endangering a minor.
Homicide investigators say they are probing a possible link between Clark Rockefeller and the cold Sohus case.

The Hamilton Avenue School building committee yesterday agreed to inject an extra half-million dollars into the delay-mired project to push it across the finish line without cutting too much into the academic calendar.
The additional funding will help ensure that the building is completed by Aug. 15. School may not begin until Sept. 15 because of the time needed to move in. That's two weeks after the Aug. 27 start for the district, and a week after the Sept. 8 target school officials had hoped for...
....Both options have a slew of consequences, however.Starting school Sept. 8 could force staff to sacrifice snow days, vacation time, even national and religious holidays, such as Rosh Hashanah and Columbus Day, to meet the state's minimum 182-day requirement.
And if the school year is delayed another week, to Sept. 15, teachers could be forced to sacrifice their traditional five-day break in February - a change that could have collective bargaining ramifications, education officials have warned....
....In the days ahead, the school board will meet with Buildings Department officials to assess whether meeting the Aug. 15 deadline is realistic, Bodson said. The board will also consult the parent-teachers association to assess whether a three-week move-in period is even feasible.

Perception vs. Reality was an ad campaign Rolling Stone magazine used to convince advertisers its readers weren’t unemployed hippies living in old VW campers but instead wealthy members of the establishment with nice homes in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Real estate web site Zillow.com has a survey out today that also highlights the difference between what people want to believe and what’s really going on in the world. According to Zillow’s research, 62% of Americans believe their home has increased in value or at least stayed the same in the past year. Reality: 77% of homes have fallen in value.
The site has called this the “Not My House!” sentiment and even created a Home Value Misperception Index. That’s the difference between the percentage of homeowners who believe their home increased in value and the percentage that actually did. Presently the difference is 32 percentage points.
Interestingly the number of folks in denial directly correlates to the severity of the fall in prices. In the Western U.S., where 88% of all homes have fallen in value, fewer people think their homes have increased. In the southern states, less harder hit by the housing slump, more people think their homes have increased.
Nationally 90% of those surveyed reported foreclosures in their neighborhood. But fewer than a third of all homeowners support government bailouts for their neighbors who took on more mortgage than they can afford.
How one family's enormous dream home became an enormous nuisance.
The dream of owning such a property is a reality for Stanley and Dorothea Cheslock, whose home boasts 26,000 square feet of some of the finest materials money can buy.
"That's a hammerhead beam structure, which is the same beam structure that's in Westminster Abbey," Stanley said on a recent tour of his home.
The vertical posts came from a barn that was built in 1760. And in their wine room, which can hold 3,700 bottles, the base of one table weighs 2,000 pounds. "We had a crane to bring it in and set it down," Dorothea said.
Not to mention the little extras: a movie theater with a marquee and concession stand, an indoor lap pool, a bass pond and the piece de resistance: a view to die for, courtesy of a French bird cage elevator.
So who wouldn't want to bask in all this luxury? The same family who owns it: The Cheslocks.
"You know, we're not really going to be around enough to take advantage of this place, so we should probably just sell," Stanley said.
The Cheslocks painstakingly built the Hillcrest estate from the ground up. They devoted four years and $21 million to building their dream mansion. But just over a year after moving in, it was time to call the movers again -- their dream was just too big.
Robert Frank, a Wall Street Journal columnist who writes about the ultra rich, says he has a name for the Cheslocks' change of heart. He's seen it too many times in America.
"I call it 'Oversized Mansion Syndrome,'" or OMS, Frank said.
"I've heard that recurrent theme," Stanley said. "Houses are too big, people are going to go back to smaller houses and then the next cycle in the real estate boom the houses get bigger. I just think that's part of the cycle."........
