Don't Panic If Most Out Of Town Beach Visitors Are Hispanic

How would someone from Greenwich feel if they took a visitor to new York City to see all the sights and was told Central park was only for New York City Residents.

Or if a group of Greenwich School children went to see the statue of Liberty, but they were not allowed on the ferry, because they were not accompanied by a new work city resident.

All Public Parks Belong To All The Public.

That's why they are called public parks.

You don't hear taxpayers in Nebraska complaining about their tax dollars being spent on having the Coast Guard being first responders to Greenwich Ferries and Islands.

Another break for nonresidents

To the editor:

Greenwich, we did it again, Thank you, former First Selectman Jim Lash, for opening our beach islands to anyone, without any real input ("Islands open to everyone," Greenwich Time, June 15). Those of us who live here and pay taxes to maintain the islands gladly would have outsiders share for the same ferry ticket price we pay, and yes, let them take all our parking spaces, as Sam Romeo said.

As I said before to all taxpaying residents: Maybe we should all move out, and that way we can come back and enjoy all the amenities Greenwich has to offer for free.

In n 2001 we were told you had to open the beach on reasonable terms, but instead of complying, our spineless politicians spent outrageous tax dollars catering to hateful windbags.

First Selectman Peter Teasi, should be commended for having the guts to tell residents the truth. Unfortunately, Jim Lash choose tax dollars while pandering to intolerant windbags who put hateful comments on newspaper message boards.

What are these uncivilized and intolerant windbags going to want their politicians to do next?

Maybe they will want the town attorney to argue that Greenwich owns all of the air space over the Town of Greenwich and no air planes will be able to fly over

Maybe, the uncivilized and intolerant wind bags then you can get a pandering politician like Dodi Fallanca McCollem to say that Greenwich owns the all the air in Greenwich and non-residents wont be able to breathe in town.

Maybe, Dodi McCollem can get the town to rope of the beaches, there could be a non-resident and resident sections of the beach.

We are sure that Town Attorney John Wayne Fox will get one of his sleaze bag consulting lawyer buddies to charge the town hundreds of thousands of dollars to argue that seperating the beaches is perfectly legal.

We can hear Mr. Fox now telling the newspapers how things at the beach are going to be seperate but equal.

Maybe, Dodi McCollem and John Wayne Fox should organize a KKK rally right on the beach to make their point about non-residents using the beach.

At Times, Greenwich can be become so intolerant, unwelcoming, classist, and, yes, racist?

Some of the comments on the Greenwich Time message board are showing us that a form of quiet racism and bigotry raising its ugly head in Greenwich.

Comments like this are uncalled for....

• i hope u speak spanish says...."get ready for boom boxes playing mexican songs loud, families of 25 setting up shop for the whole day on the grills and not a word of english being heard. Welcome to Greenwich".

While other comments like this are a bit more low key....

• Sugarmags says....." I just hope it stays clean and safe like it's always been."

What, is Sugarmags afraid of being mugged as she gets off the ferry?

Will women be raped and killed right in front of their families by criminal non-resident gangs who don't speak English?

No wonder Greenwich is once again the laughing stock of the nation as AP wire features the town's foolishness.

The taxpayers of Greenwich should stop wasting their time fighting over "cupcakes and beaches".

The single family home-owners of Greenwich need to start fighting to stop the town politicians from wasting their tax dollars on the many useless, bottomless, money pits that they pursue or support.(endless studies, excessive employee waste, useless lawsuits, bloated consultants, etc, etc, etc).

Frank Mazza needs no reminder that parents are expecting the new Hamilton Avenue School to open {safely} on Aug. 27.

"We're well aware of that," said Mazza, the head of the building committee who has been under pressure to help get the much-delayed school project completed this summer. "We'll have it finished."

The town building department is expecting to begin final inspections at the new Hamilton Avenue School today. The final inspection approval process, which involves sign-offs from several departments, including building, zoning, health, fire and engineering, could take weeks to complete, officials said.

"We're starting the certificate of occupancy process, which is not a simple process," Mazza said.

"We're going to try and get one wing approved and we'll go from there."

Reverting to a policy that restricts nonresidents from riding town ferries unless they are accompanied by a resident would be impossible to justify if challenged in court, First Selectman Peter Tesei said yesterday.

"Like I said, it's pretty straightforward. You look at all the facts that are out there on the table, I think that's a likely conclusion that most people can draw," Tesei said.

Tesei was responding to an onslaught of criticism from residents over allowing outsiders to ride the ferries to Island Beach and Great Captains Island for the first time this past weekend. About one-third of the ferry passengers were from out of town during one stretch Sunday afternoon, drawing the ire of Greenwich residents who said they pay for the upkeep of the ferries and islands.

"They come in. They take over the whole island. I don't think it's right. I think it's awful," said Mary Pellegrino....

Greenwich Roundup leaves no stone unturned as they bring you news and commentary on the world of Greenwich News media.

One way in which people who write blogs and people in the "mainstream media" are alike is their endless fascination with examining themselves and their colleagues/counterparts.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, if you are interested in such things, which not only media people are.

And it's just not the main stream media that needs to be examined.

Blogger's often get the story wrong plus no one ever looks into the fact that the blogosphere is an overly chummy place.

Do you have any thoughts on why blogs are less critical of other blogs?

Blogs are suffering from the same problem as the Mainstream Media.

We think if we ignore our shortcomings, no one will notice them.

Greenwich Roundup has started to fill the void and began the process of holding blogs accountable, just as we have started to hold Greenwich Newspapers accountable.

There are some reporters who think that there is not an audience for media accountability in Greenwich, but they are wrong.

In fact, many Greenwich News readers have felt that sorry state of local reporting in Greenwich needs to be exposed.

If the local media is not accountable, then our local politician's official will not be accountable. The single family home-owners need to know what is really going on at Town Hall and the school administration offices.

Just as there is a good-old-boys network among local cable, newspapers and and radio news reporters.

There is also a good-old boys network amoung bloggers that will eventually get shaken up.

Lips will get removed from asses at some point.

Some political insiders and government officials say that the local media or bloggers should have opened a can of whip ass on Greenwich Roundup a long time ago.

We say bring it on - This is America.

We are ready, willing and able to compete in the marketplace of ideas.

• We think we will win the argument that local Greenwich media and some bloggers do not hold the dysfunctional Board of Education and failed school administrators accountable as the waste 120 million a year.

• And we think we will win the argument that local Greenwich media and some bloggers do not hold town officials accountable and treat the single family home-owners of Greenwich like second class citizens.

• We also think that we will win the argument that local Greenwich media and almost every Greenwich blogger ignores members of Greenwich society who live on the west side of town.

Greenwich Roundup might be not be as pretty as the mainstream Greenwich news web sites, nor are we as slick as many of the local blog sites, but it's not about being who has the prettiest presence on the web.

Greenwich Roundup might be the the junkyard dog of Greenwich Media, but this junkyard dog intend to be a Greenwich's Media Watchdog.

It's time for the "pretty" local media outlets to wake up and remember.....

Eastern Middle School students recently conducted a Read For Change project, a read-a-thon to raise money to buy books for children at Timothy Dwight Elementary school in New Haven. Through their fundraising and the generosity of Scholastic publishing's discount program, Eastern's students raised enough money to buy for every student at Dwight four books of their choice, with additional books for teachers and the school's media center. Twenty-two Eastern Middle School students, five teachers and Principal Ralph Mayo then visited Dwight where they spent a morning reading to the children and helping them choose their books.

GREENWICH — - The town has rescinded a decades-long restriction on access by out-of-towners to two prime beaches. For the first time, nonresidents may board municipal ferries to visit Island Beach and Great Captain's Island.

Previously, nonresidents were barred from the ferries, which began their seasonal run Saturday, unless they were accompanied by a Greenwich resident.

The policy change was made last fall by then-First Selectman Jim Lash, but has not been publicized. Town parks director Joseph Siciliano said the policy was not properly communicated to staff, resulting in incorrect information on the town's website and in a news release for a jazz concert.

Greenwich's beach policy has landed the town in hot water. In 2001, the state Supreme Court struck down its residents-only beach policy.

GREENWICH - For the first time, the town is offering out-of-towners easy access to two prime Greenwich beaches, Island Beach and Great Captain's Island, after rescinding a restriction that had been in place for decades.

In a policy change not announced or publicized by the town, nonresidents now have full access to board the three municipal ferries running to the islands. Previously, out-of-towners had been barred from the ferries unless accompanied by a town resident.

"The ferry will be available to nonresidents with the ability to ride the ferry using a day pass along with a ridership ticket," town Parks Director Joseph Siciliano said. "There is no residency restriction."

The former policy had been in effect for at least 25 years, he said. Town ferries started their seasonal runs Saturday.

The policy change makes the two islands the most accessible of Greenwich beaches for nonresidents. The ferry dock is near the downtown train station, adjacent to several large municipal parking lots and within walking distance of Town Hall, where beach passes are on sale on weekdays....

...Last week, the town's Web site continued to show the old policy, while a Department of Parks and Recreation statement for a Jazz on the Sound concert next Sunday on Island Beach said, "You must be a resident of Greenwich and possess a current beach card to ride the ferry."

Siciliano said the incorrect information on the Web site and in the statement were because the policy was not correctly communicated among staff.

"It's incorrect," Siciliano said.

"I'm sure somebody just pulled last year's press release off the shelf, plugged in the new dates and then sent it out. Anybody who buys a day pass can buy a ferry ticket and listen to the Jazz on the Sound."

According to Lash, the change was prompted by the realization that the policy failed to meet a federal mandate enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard requiring a plan to screen passengers on ferries instituted after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks....

...Brendan Leydon, a Stamford attorney who successfully sued Greenwich in the state Supreme Court in 2001 to open town beaches to out-of-towners, said the now-abolished ferry policy was legally questionable and might have provoked a constitutional court challenge if left unchanged.

"I think it is probably smart they changed the previous policy which appears to be of dubious legality," Leydon said. "Barring nonresidents who are not accompanied by residents probably would not be sustained in the courts."

Town Attorney John Wayne Fox countered Leydon's suggestion that the ferry policy was changed because it was in conflict with the court decision. He said the policy change also was unrelated to the recently concluded federal lawsuit of Stamford bicyclist Paul Kempner, who claimed the town's beach policies continued to violate the 2001 verdict.

"I don't think the lifting of the restriction had anything to do with the Kempner case or concerns about the town's standing legally on the beach policy - or any restriction which was in conflict with the Supreme Court case," Fox said.

He said the incorrect information on the Web site would be fixed soon.

Some residents will not be happy about Lash's decision to loosen the restriction without public input, said Sam Romeo, a North Mianus resident and former town legislator.

For example, Romeo said, out-of-town motorists visiting Island Beach might use parking spaces in Horseneck parking lot adjacent to the ferry intended for permit-holding Greenwich residents.

"I don't think that things were well thought out, and I think there are unintended consequences that will come with this," Romeo said. "They should have had some public comment."....

Given the nature of some of the subject matter of this post, it is sad, but I feel that it has become necessary to disclose that I have no relationship with the Himes campaign outside of fervently hoping that he gets elected and donating on several occasions. I have never been paid by the Himes campaign or by anyone else (although I am open to money, please call me) (note, that last bit was sarcastic) for anything that I have written.

I have no idea why the Greenwich Time is dignifying these ravings by printing them, but they are:

In a case of ‘he said, she said,’ Congressional hopeful Jim Himes is accusing fellow Democrat and Greenwich resident Lee Whitnum of calling him a Nazi on her campaign Web site and on a popular Internet blog.

First of all, this is not “a case of ‘he said, she said’.” The post by Lee Whitnum, which has been removed from her website, is still available, right here, where she posted it on My Left Nutmeg. Helpfully, it is entitled Jim Himes Nazi Connecticut, by Lee Whitnum Candidate for Congress. In it, she writes, “I went to bed a congressional candidate and I woke up to find myself in Jim Himes’ version of Nazi, Germany.” There is no “he said” here - her words have been immortalized online.

The reason for this attack? “[T]he powerful Himes has completely sown [sic] up the Internet media in my state.” Generally speaking, as a Jew, I find it insulting, and I push back on, when people accuse others of antisemitism for no discernible reason (because it robs the term of meaning in a time where antisemitism still exists), but truly, this is too stupid to even be offended by! Is that what the Nazi’s were doing? Sewing up the alternative media? (In retrospect, maybe its not too stupid to be offended by)

[Incidentally, the quote as it appears on the GT website is, “the powerful Himes has completely sewn up the Internet media in my state” - why did they clean up her spelling error? No idea.]

In the non-existent “she said” portion of the article, Whitnum (negated the “he said,” but I digress) stood by her comments (!) and admitted that they previously appeared on her website (aside, if she stands by them, why don’t they still appear on her website?), but justified them:

“At the time, I tried to defend myself against anonymous bloggers,” Whitnum said. “I felt like I had stepped in Jim Himes’ version of Nazi Connecticut - not that he’s a Nazi.”

Let’s take the two parts separately. The first part simply isn’t true - she named the bloggers she had a problem with in the linked post (which, in case you were wondering, was available to the reporter who wrote this “article” - yes, I used scare quotes to say article, sue me*). Further, even if the bloggers, named by Whitnum in her “defense” (I just can’t stop, apparently scare quotes are “addictive”), actually were anonymous (and not named by her), how does that justify what she said? Anonymous bloggers said something mean about you so the candidate who they support, you know the candidate that you accused of paying them utterly without evidence, is a Nazi? That is absurd!

The second part is just ridiculous on its face. When you write the words, “I woke up to find myself in Jim Himes’ version of Nazi, Germany” in a post entitled, “Jim Himes Nazi Connecticut,” you are calling someone a Nazi, no matter how crazy it makes you look later.

The article also, with studious fairness, documents the campaign finance foibles of the Whitnum campaign:

A check of the Federal Election Commission’s Web site showed that Whitnum’s campaign finance report for the first quarter was dated April 15, the date it was due, but was received May 12 by the agency. Her year-end report for 2007, due Jan. 31, was filed April 26 with the commission.

Whitnum said she had not received any notification that she was in violation of campaign finance rules.

“If there’s something amiss, then nobody’s telling me,” Whitnum said.

In case anyone out there is curious, and didn’t feel satisfied by the reporting in the article, the FEC generally frowns on missing a filing deadline by three months (filing more than 30 days after the deadline is so late that it is actually considered to be a non-filing, rather than a late filing).

I understand that the GT is on the Right (or Republican) side of the political spectrum - and that is their prerogative. I would do things differently, but I don’t own a newspaper (yet - I’m looking at you Mr. Murdoch). But simply owning a newspaper and not agreeing with a candidate does not justify giving a platform to anyone willing to say something bad about them - even if what they say is offensive, and a little crazy. Why is the GT giving this nonsense an uncritical airing?

*Just kidding, please don’t really sue me.

Stepping Up To Reduce Energy

The Ashforth Co., a Stamford commercial real estate firm, will be the first in Fairfield County and one of the first in New England to take on an international challenge to reduce energy consumption.

The Building Owners and Managers Association, or BOMA, created the Market Transformation Energy Plan and 7-Point Challenge in July 2007 to challenge companies to reduce energy consumption in commercial buildings by 30 percent by 2012.

In the first steps toward meeting the requirements, Ashforth has started to purchase 20 percent of the energy needs for Greenwich Plaza, a 315,000-square-foot complex in Greenwich, from renewable sources.

A new chiller installed at the plaza will save about $40,000 annually in energy costs, according to company officials.

She'll be back: Sternberg takes medical leave

Greenwich Time - Superintendent of Schools Betty Sternberg is taking a medical leave of absence from her job starting Monday, the district announced yesterday.

The medical reasons were not made public, although district officials said Sternberg, 58, told them she will be fine and expects to return to work in a couple of months.

"Dr. Sternberg has indicated that she plans to return to work in mid-August," Board of Education chairman Nancy Weissler said in a statement the district released yesterday. "The Board has extended its best wishes to Dr. Sternberg for a successful resolution of her medical issues."

Sternberg declined to discuss her medical situation. "I appreciate everyone's good wishes," she said. "I have every expectation that I will be back in mid-August."

Last year, she wrote an opinion editorial in which she talked about living cancer free since being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001.

Sternberg held a staff meeting yesterday where she sought to reassure her colleagues and told them her absence would only be temporary, officials said.

"She's assured us that she will be returning," said Deputy Superintendent Kathy Greider who will assume the reins in Sternberg's absence.

Greider, who began her career as a first-grade teacher at Dwight Elementary School in Hartford, later promoted to principal and then lead principal for the Hartford district, has worked as Greenwich's deputy superintendent since last year.

Greenwich Time - The auction would have taken place today at Town Hall. But unlike previous years, when the tax collector placed legal notices in the newspaper with the list of properties for sale, Caravella never publicly announced that there would be an auction.

The town has yet to auction a single property in the seven years since Caravella first started threatening homeowners with an auction, because the owners forked over the amount owed by a last-minute deadline each year.

"People just don't want to have their name in the newspaper or have their house's picture on the wall at Town Hall," Caravella said..

Body dump: Man faces new charge

Prosecutors yesterday brought a charge of felony murder against a Bridgeport man accused of plotting to kill a 49-year-old Bronx, N.Y., resident, alleging he wielded a gun to rob the victim and helped leave his body on a backcountry road this winter.

In a hearing yesterday, Assistant State's Attorney Maureen Ornousky, the prosecutor in the case, told Judge Martin Nigro she had brought single counts of felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree robbery against Larry Corbett in the January killing of George A. McPherson, whose body was found by Greenwich Police the morning of Jan. 14 with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.

Prosecutors allege that Corbett, 36, of 385 Harral Ave., the Bronx, used a firearm to kidnap and rob McPherson while taking part in the murder, Ornousky said after the hearing. She declined to provide further details about Corbett's alleged role in the crime.

"We found enough evidence to bring these charges," she said. "I think Greenwich Police did a fantastic job investigating this case."
