Helmsley's belongings being sold for charity

Norwalk Advocate

A globe-spanning collection of art, priceless furniture and other belongings from the estate of late Greenwich hotel and real estate billionaire Leona Helmsley will be auctioned in Manhattan by Christie's International starting tomorrow, the auction house said.

More than 500 items including silver platters, Old Dutch Masters paintings and Chinese ceramic figurines were chosen from Helmsley's Greenwich, New York, and Sarasota, Fla., residences to be sold as part of a series of auctions conducted by Christies at its Rockefeller Center auction house through November, Christie's spokesman Rik Pike said.

Proceeds will benefit the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, Pike said, with Helmsley's belongings expected to bring in between $4 million to $6 million, according to Christie's.

'Christie's is delighted to be offering for sale selections from the contents of Leona M. Helmsley's three residences, to be auctioned here at Christie's New York throughout 2008,' Pike said. 'The collection reflects a sophisticated taste and a wonderful sense of style across a wide range of collecting fields, including Asian art, European painting and decorative arts.'

Tomorrow, Christie's will offer the first block of Helmsley property, some of her collected silver, including a silver-gilt Tiffany flatware set appraised at more than $25,000, according to a listing on Christie's Web site.....

Broadwater may come between friends

Norwalk Advocate

As state attorneys general in Connecticut and New York, Democrats Richard Blumenthal and Eliot Spitzer were political soulmates, particularly when it came to pooling legal resources and clout to protect the environment.

'In some ways, it was a partnership,' said Brooke Masters, a Financial Times reporter who in 2006 authored 'Spoiling For A Fight: The Rise of Eliot Spitzer.' 'There's a whole series of lawsuits over coal-fired plants and global warming.'

In late 2006, the Competitive Enterprise Institution, a conservative Washington, D.C., think tank, rated Blumenthal the worst state attorney general based on his activist approach. Spitzer came in third.

Baseball fans have a laugh on Shays after gaffes

Norwalk Advocate

Sports trivia apparently isn't a favorite pastime of Rep. Christopher Shays.

A number of national sports Web sites lampooned the Fairfield County Republican yesterday after he confused the names of some key baseball figures and one of the sport's milestones during a congressional hearing on the steroids scandal.

Shays, who is a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, referred to the 1919 Chicago White Sox team that threw the World Series as the 'Blackhawks' instead of the Black Sox, the moniker commonly given the discredited team.

The Blackhawks are a National Hockey League team.

'Seems to me that if anyone in Congress is going to lecture baseball on how it runs its sport, that congressman ought to demonstrate at least some basic familiarity with the sport. Keep that in mind as you listen to Shays wax poetic throughout the day -- and afterward,' said Jayson Stark, a senior writer for ESPN.com who was blogging yesterday's hearing for the sports Web site....

Greenwich death ruled a murder by gunshots

Norwalk Advocate

Multiple gunshot wounds to the chest killed the man whose body was found Monday morning along a private backcountry Greenwich road, the state medical examiner's office said yesterday.

Police identified the man through fingerprints as a 49-year-old out-of-town man but are withholding his name and last known residence pending notification of his family, Chief David Ridberg said.

A day after the body was found lying across Sterling Road, the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide while police investigated. Officers were at the scene by Sterling and Riversville roads yesterday morning, canvassing the neighborhood and motorists on whether they saw anything Monday morning.

'We're working the case pretty hard,' Ridberg said. 'You have to get on it early and run with it, otherwise you'll lose your opportunity.'

A bulletin was sent to other police departments seeking information about the man.

Several neighbors who live near where the body was found said they did not hear or see anything unusual Monday morning. Police have told neighbors that they do not believe the man was shot where his body was found, residents said.....

Norwalk Advocate

To the editor:

I am a Greenwich resident, who, along with Gordon and Sally Mackenzie, feel that Greenwich High School student Steven Bryn has been treated unjustly by the school administration.

From time immemorial, how many high school boys have made similar immature remarks such as Steven allegedly made? These are, for the most part, smart-alecky comments, and really should not be considered serious enough to sully an exemplary academic record sent to colleges.

I wonder if Steven were to have called a girl "fat," or "ugly," would this go on his record? These comments are far more damaging to a female's ego than one regarding her chest.......

01/16/08 - I Met With First Selectman Peter Tesei Today

We talked about the crime, drugs, graffiti, quality of life, vandalism problems that plague Byram residents and merchants every single day.
The possibility of a Byram Police Substation and more police patrols throughout Byram were mentioned.
Mr. Tesei said that he would send an email to the Department of Public Works about the Graffiti on the Welcome to the Town Of Greenwich- Village Of Byram sign on Putnam Avenue.
We also discussed how Police Squad 2 (Central Greenwich) and Police Squad 3 (Eastern Greenwich) currently work together to solve crime problems. It was suggested that maybe Squad 1 (Western Greenwich - Byram) could be assisted by squad 2 for a few months to lower the crime rate in Byram.
Mr. Tesei and I both agreed that there were many wonderful new projects ready to go in Byram once the security and quality of life problems are eliminated by the Greenwich Police Department.
Mr. Tesei was very enthusiastic about the new efforts for the Lyon House that are currently coming together and he provided me with some great literature about the Lyon House.
Further, Mr. Tesei encouraged me to get involved with the Byram Neighborhood Association.
I think that if Mr. Tesei can bring a more police services to Byram the many other Byram projects will takeoff and flourish.
Mr. Tesei's Legacy may very well be decided on the streets of Byram.
Will the youth gangs and drugs continue to destroy Byram or will there be a Reincarnation in Byram.
If Rudy Giuliani could get rid of the squeegee men and turn around Times Square, then surely Peter Tesie can put an end to alcoholics drinking from open containers and eliminate the high level of crime in Byram.

01/15/08 - Even More Complaints About How Byram Was Hit Hard With Gang Related Graffiti This Weekend

This morning I went to get my morning news paper at State Line Stationary in Byram and the gentleman behind the counter noticed my picture on the cover of the Greenwich Time.
He started telling me how his business received the gang graffiti and how something has to be done about all of the kids that congregate on the corner of Mill Street and Water Streets.
I told him I agreed with him and that I had heard that there might be video of a car that had the gang running all over Byram defacing property. Apparently the license plate did not render well in the video.
However, the disk with the video had been turned over to police to see if they could digitally enhance the images of the plate.
One customer said they don't need fancy "video tricks", they need to have a couple of policemen to handle all of the kids that are doing this.
I agreed with the customer and said there is a real estate business, called Judge and Associates, just a couple of doors down the street.
The lady who used to operate Rolly Polly told me that after he open his business he got all of his office computers stolen in a break in.
The he has to put up with gangs of kids hanging around his business and people getting mugged in front of his business.
Now the side of his business has gang graffiti in 3 to 4 foot letters on the side of his building.
Another customer started complaining it is not just the police. He said Byram gets covered in graffiti and none of the newspapers cover the story. He said it's like we live in a different state or country.
The residents of Byram know what Byram needs, but no one is listening to them.

01/15/06 - More Greenwich Police Department Frat Boy Stunts On North Water Street

I Wanted To Put Up A Post About The RTM Meeting,

Unfortunately, I Have To Report On More Police Misconduct In Byram

After Midnight I once again had the Greenwich Police Department sending a patrol car to harrrass and intimidate me on North Water Street.

The car would stop by our place at 161 North Water Street and sit for a very long period of time. When I came up the patrol car would move up to about 189 North Water Street and sit for a long while in the middle of the road.

I would stand outside and watch the patrol car, which eventually would drive down to the stop sign and go on Byram Road towards the post road.

Then five maybe ten minutes later the patrol car would come again by 161 North Water Street and then when I came out would drive up to about three more houses and once again just sit in middle of the street.

This ignorant and unproductive police behaviour scares and upsets my wife to no end. So I took her somewhere else to sleep for the night.

Later, I called the Greenwich Police Department to ask who the Officer for Byram was for the 12 to 8 am shift and I got a dispatcher 11, who said he could not tell me.

I then spoke to a Sargent Lombardi and asked who the officer in Byram was for the 12 to 8 am shift.

He said there could be a couple of officers in that area and wanted to know why I wanted the names of the Officers. I told him all of the information above and he started playing dumb asking, "Is the car in the middle of the street now?" and once again told him we had left, because of the behaviour of the Byram officer.

I then informed Sargent Lombardi that most cell phones come with cameras that take pictures that get time stamped with information from the cell phone network.

Officer Lombardi then hung up the phone.

I called back once again spoke to Dispatcher 11, who once again gave me Sargent Lombardi, starts playing dumb again, and tells me he sent another police sargent out to 161 North Water, and he does not find me there or see a patrol car sitting in the street.

I once again tell Sargent Lombardi that I left, because this officer in the patrol car had greatly upset my wife and I would just like to know who were the two officers who were assigned to Byram.

I repeatedly had to ask who the Byram officer was and eventually Sargent Lombardi said the Byram Officer was Officer Smerrillo.

When I asked about the other officer that Sargent Lombardi said might also be in Byram he said,"I can't not recall who the officer is off the top of my head."

All this wasted Police resources to harrass a police critic.

It sort of proves my point that the Greenwich Police Department needs more accountability.

You would think that Chief Ridberg would have beter things for his high paid police officers to do.

I went to Executive Deli in Byram to get some lunch earlier today and of coarse the the talk is all about gangs of kids can just go around and cover Byram in graffiti on a Saturday night, because the police are nowhere to be found in Byram.

The hardworking owner of executive Deli said Mill Street had been covered in graffiti from the East Post Liquors Building to sidewalks next to Salon O on Henry Street. The owner of Executive Deli felt fortunate that his business had been spared.

The talk in the Deli was why isn't a police officer posted in Byram at the Firehouse over night to control the gangs of kids in Byram.

Just how is a business like Salon O going to keep attracting high end and trendy lady customers with graffiti all over the sidewalk next to their business?

01/14/08 - The Power Of Prayer - Part 2 - Another Coincidence ?????

A Phone Call From God ?????
This morning my landlord called me and asked if I was still going to the RTM meeting tonight to be sworn in as a legislator for Byram District 4.

I told him I was going and he suggested I skip the meeting and call in sick.

He said you can always get sworn in at next months meeting.

He said that if I go and get sworn in that the Police and some Town Leaders are going to get very mad at me.

I told him I would think about calling in sick, but I new I was going to get sworn in tonight.

As soon as, I hung up the phone and the phone rang again and it was First Selectman Peter Tesei on the line. He asked if I would meet with him on Wednesday at 9am to talk about Byram. We talked briefly and as Mr. Tesei said goodbye he said I will see you at the RTM meeting tonight.

As I hung up the phone my wife was bringing me my morning tea.

I told her that I just got off the phone with Mr. Tesei and said he was going to meet me about Byram at Wednesday at 9 am. Plus, I told her Mr. Tesei said he would see me at tonight's RTM Meeting.

My wife said,"I knew that. Don't you remember the prayers at church about softening hearts?"

I then told my wife, "Unbelievable, are you and Harvest Time Church going to take credit for everything. Since, December 28th I have called or went by his office every other day asking for a meeting. I have driven his secretary Paula nuts with my requests for a meeting. I even called the ask the First Selectman Show on WGCH looking for a meeting."

I then told my wife that this meeting was already in the works and the prayers were coincidental.

My wife then said,"I hope you will notice how nice he and everyone is going to be to you tonight. You are going to see that everyone has a soft heart."
