Everyone remembers Greenwich, the town in Connecticut that went through a FOIA and several lawsuits only to lose its bid refuse sharing GIS data with a consultant.School And Scouts Agree To Work Together
To the Editor:
I was surprised to read the front-page headline in the May 7 Greenwich Time ("Scouts Take A New Route") as I feel it is quite misleading. Simply stated, the Boy Scouts did not withdraw our request for 2-3 minute in-class visitations or 5-10 minute lunchroom presentations. Rather we agreed to work within the only options offered to us, "before and after school" recruiting opportunities.
More accurately, the headline of the story could have been "Schools and Scouts Agree to Work Together to Get More Kids in Scouting." The meeting included an open discussion about the values of scouting programs and how they support the mission and values of the Greenwich Public Schools, and included research that clearly shows scouting programs help strengthen academic performance. All in attendance agreed.
The meeting also included a discussion of new recruiting ideas, such as after-school recruiting opportunities (at elementary and middle schools) with various exhibits and displays for students and parents, and the opportunity to set up a "model campsite" at the school on "recruiting" days to display tents, canoes, pioneering projects, etc., as well as the opportunity to establish a Venture Crew for boys and girls at Greenwich High School.
It was agreed by all that scouting holds an important place in the lives of our children, and that we would continue to work together to insure that every child has a chance to learn about the Scouting programs and is given every opportunity to join. Future meetings between representatives of the schools and scouting are planned, and will include the chairwoman of the Board of Education and the president of the Greenwich Council, BSA. Our focus will be on strategies to expose more children to the "core values" of our scouting programs: citizenship, compassion, cooperation, courage, faith, health and fitness, honesty, perseverance, positive attitudes, resourcefulness, respect and responsibility. These are values every parent wants for their child.
Although "before and after school" are not our most desired recruiting times, I assure you that we will "do our best" to present the magic of the scouting programs within these parameters.

Thanks to bloggers, the Greenwich media has found itself faced with a much needed fact checker.
I see poorly conducted journalism by bloggers as far less dangerous to Greenwich society than the local newspaper and radio journalists who routinely toss aside their ethics and responsibility in order not to anger a key source, or violate "politically correct" points of view.
Personally, I am very grateful for the blogosphere that has allowed my own site and creativity to flourish in the short time since it was launched.
