“We all remember where we were on September 11, 2001, and I am also confronted with the memory of where I was not. I had a meeting scheduled at Cantor Fitzgerald, but it was rescheduled a few days before the attack. Like so many other Americans, I was stunned by the tragedy we witnessed in the attacks but inspired by the way we came together.

“Nine years ago today, our country was in shock as the twin towers fell, part of the Pentagon had been turned to rubble, and a Pennsylvania field became the resting place for heroes on a plane bound for yet another target. We didn’t see our nation consumed with fear, but we instead united as a community. Our first responders saved countless lives as many gave their own, and our troops, sent to a new theater soon after the attacks, continue to sacrifice as they face the threat of radicals who resent our freedoms.

09/11/10 In Memory of Those Lost On 9/11

Friends,

It's a beautiful, crisp fall day in Connecticut, eerily reminiscent of that day nine years ago when nearly 3,000 of our brothers and sisters perished in shocking attacks.

I was in lower Manhattan that day, and will never forget the scenes of ash, debris, fluttering papers, and shocked first responders realizing how many of their colleagues had been swallowed in the collapse of the towers.

I also remember the questions. That night, as I walked through the ankle-deep debris, making my way north, the questions came in a torrent. How could this have happened? Why would someone do this? Why did some perish while we survived? How could a powerful and benevolent God allow such a thing to occur to people guilty of nothing but showing up to earn their daily bread?

There are no adequate answers to those questions. There is rarely meaning in the brutality that the evil visit on the innocent. But I'm convinced that we can extract some meaning from that horrible day.

First, we can acknowledge, remember, and support those who put on uniforms every day to protect us from tragedy. The blue uniforms of our police, firefighters, and first responders and the uniforms of our warriors engaged in harm's way bespeak the promise that their wearers
make to us to substitute their lives for ours. That imposes on the rest of us a debt we cannot hope to repay.

Second, we can and should recall the unity we felt that day. Stripped of all certainty, every one of us sought connection, community, and perhaps the grace of the Divine. Men and women risked their lives to save perfect strangers, neighbors came together to feed people, give
them shelter, help them mourn. People held vigils and organized volunteer efforts around the country, praying and weeping for those they had never--and would never--meet.

I hope that as we look back today, we also look forward, recalling that sense of common purpose in order to renew our commitment to the fundamental values that define us and that unite us in a way more fundamental than any of our circumstances, creeds, or characteristics
divide us.

A tech support employee for the town is being accused by his own union of using his work computer to pen sordid tales of nymphomania, food fetishes and body piercing for several erotica websites co-workers said he runs....

....Boris Hutorin, the town's information technology director, acknowledged that the employee's writings are the subject of a human resources probe.

"I don't want to comment on this. It's under investigation," Hutorin said.

Asked whether he stood by the employee in question, who those with knowledge of the matter reported has worked for the town for one to two years, Hutorin said, "I don't want to see any employees who work for me be in violation of any rules and regulations."....

Family Centers Hosts HOPE Floats Oct. 23

Hello:

Attached is a press release announcing a family fun day that Family Centers is hosting at Tilley Pond in Darien on Oct. 23. The event is called HOPE Floats, and allows families to build and decorate small wooden boats and launch them in the pond. Pizza will also be served.

While all sales of the boats benefits Family Centers’ bereavement and critical illness programs, the idea of the event is to get families from all over Fairfield County together for a fun fall afternoon.

Family Centers to Host ‘HOPE Floats’ Family Fun Event at Tilley Pond Oct. 23

Darien, Conn. (Sept. 10, 2010) – Sailing season might be over by the time fall rolls around, but Darien’s Tilley Pond will be filled with dozens of tiny wooden boats on Oct. 23 as part of a community-wide gathering hosted by Family Centers.

Called HOPE Floats, the family-orientated event allows children of all ages and their families to build and decorate small, easy-to-construct sailboats. Glue, markers and other art supplies will be available to help children personalize their boats. Those wishing to remember a loved one who has died are encouraged to write that person’s name on the boat’s sail. Families will be invited to launch the sailboats beginning at 4 p.m.

Sailboat kits are available for $10 on www.familycenters.org or at Family Centers’ offices in Greenwich (40 Arch Street) and Darien (590 Post Road). Kits will also be on sale the day of the event. Those purchasing sailboat kits will be given tickets for free pizza courtesy of The Pizza Truck Company of Bethel. All proceeds will benefit critical illness and bereavement support services offered through Family Centers’ Center for HOPE and The Den for Grieving Kids.

Family Centers is a private, nonprofit organization offering education and human services to children, adults and families in Fairfield County.
