First Greenwich Roundup Breaks The News:

05/28/09 Greenwich Roundup Exclusive: Reader Submitted Comments About A Second Swine Flu Outbreak At Gateway Preschool

And Then The Hearst Newspaper Editors Asign The Story To Colin Gustafson:

Preschool closed by flu

As public schools remain open despite rising swine flu infections, a private day care center in Pemberwick will stay closed until Monday, after nearly the entire staff called out sick this week amid concerns about another outbreak of the virus.

Preschool administrators decided to shutter The Gateway School, an all-day childcare center, 2 Chapel St., for the entire week Tuesday morning, after 11 of the 12 staffers said they would be absent from work.

Since then, four teachers and four students have tested positive for the flu, and are awaiting confirmation from the state Department of Public Health on whether the flu strain is in fact the H1N1 virus, the school said.

.....Six of the sick employees and students are from Greenwich and two are from Stamford, according to Beth Tanner, preschool director for Family Centers, the Greenwich-based nonprofit that runs Gateway.

So far, she said, eight staffers have reported flu-like symptoms and several parents have reported that their children have been suffering from fevers and vomiting spells since being pulled out of the school, which serves 53 children, ages 2-5.

The state's test results for the preschool were still pending Thursday evening -- even as the state health department confirmed 16 new cases of swine flu in town, including 15 new infections at Western Middle School. That updated tally Thursday showed the total number of confirmed H1N1 cases in Greenwich doubling since Wednesday, when a total of 16 cases had been confirmed, including 11 students at Western......

.....Still, some Gateway parents said they were pleased with the decision to err on the side of caution and close the school, particularly because the students are younger and may be more vulnerable to flu infections than middle schoolers, they said.

"I think the situation is a little more serious when you're dealing with these younger kids," said Laura Marino, whose sons, Marco, 4, and Zachary, 5, are out sick from the preschool with the flu. "They're a little smaller, and they don't always know how to tell you when they have symptoms."......

....Since being closed, the preschool has been cleaned and sterilized, according Bill Brucker, communications director for Family Centers.

Across Connecticut, 47 new cases of H1N1 were confirmed by state health officials Thursday, bringing the total statewide count to 196 with the majority of infections -- 134 -- in Fairfield County.

Health officials said the number of confirmed cases represents only a fraction of the likely number of cases in the state because many persons with mild symptoms do not seek care from a doctor or hospital but recover at home.

"We expect to see it higher," town Health Director Caroline Calderone Baisley said.

05/29/09 "You are an inveterate liar," Judge Martin Nigro told Greenwich resident Peter Gould.

Town developer in subpoena-evasion incident given probation
Greenwich Time
By Monica Potts

STAMFORD -- A Greenwich businessman and developer accused of using his pickup truck to evade two men who tried to serve him a subpoena was sentenced in state Superior Court Wednesday to two years of probation.

Peter Gould, 68, of 429 Taconic Road, Greenwich, was found guilty after a brief jury trial of first-degree reckless endangerment and not guilty on related assault charges.

Judge referee Martin Nigro told Gould, who walked into court in a leg brace and using crutches, that he had planned to send Gould to jail......

....On March 18, 2007, a marshal, George Ritchie, and George Christiansen, who worked with him, went to Gould's home to serve a subpoena relating to his divorce proceedings. Gould was in a pickup truck with a snowplow attached, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

Ritchie and Christiansen told police Gould tried to drive away when he saw them walk toward his truck, in an attempt to avoid being served. While he tried to maneuver past the men, the men fell to the ground. The men had said they were struck by his truck, but there was ice and snow on the ground as well......

05/29/09 William Frey's investment firm of Greenwich Financial has major investments in the secondary mortgage markets

Who is William Frey, and why is he ready to fight

Examiner.com

You may not know the name, you may not agree with his position, but you will hear about him and soon. In much the same way the Chrysler investors wanted their money to be doled out by a bankruptcy judge rather than the executive branch of government, William Frey is ready to do the same thing with mortgage investments.

The basis of his concern is the way the Obama Administration has strong armed most sectors facing bankruptcy. His investment firm of Greenwich Financial has major investments in the secondary mortgage markets. His investments are backed on a contract basis, and thus is his argument with Bank of America. He has warned them, that if they renegotiate home loans to affect the final bottom line of profits per the contract basis, he will sue them to recoup the money lost.

It seems that once the news circulated in the mortgage circles, the administration a.k.a. the Soprano’s first term, has acted with swiftness with their own threats. Democrats Barney Frank of Massachusetts, Maxine Waters of California, Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, Paul Kanjorski of Pennsylvania, Carolyn Maloney of New York, and Melvin Watt of North Carolina, otherwise known as the usual stirrers of the porcelain bowl answered accordingly. "Your decision is a serious threat to our efforts to respond to the current economic crisis, and if this cannot be arranged on a voluntary basis, then we will pursue further steps."

Frey is ready and willing to pursue this matter in court, and has already served suit papers to Countrywide Financial. This will set the precedence for further legal actions regarding the ignoring of contracts, or shall we say the ones only beneficial to the Administration.

Bernie Madoff: $4 Million Lawsuit Filed Against Paul J. Konigsberg
TPMCafé

Steven Leber filed a $4 million lawsuit against Paul J. Konigsberg and his accounting firm, Konigsberg & Wolf charging Konigsberg with negligence and professional malpractice with respect to a Madoff account opened by Leber in 1998.

The suit was initially filed in Palm Beach District Court in March 2009 and subsequently removed to the Southern District of Florida in April 2009.

The complaint can be read here. (The actual complaint begins on p. 13.)

Konigsberg's response to the complaint can be read here. While admitting he does have a fiduciary responsibility to Leber, he claims the suit is not valid for several reasons.

Paul Konigsberg, of course, is the CPA who owned a small percentage of Madoff Securities International Limited in London. He also prepared the 990s for the Madoff Family Foundation.

Konigsberg and his wife accompanied the Madoffs on a 2004 ski trip to Switzerland.....

Roomies? Oh, Brother: Why Some Siblings Are Opting to Live Together

Express from The Washington Post

WE STOOD AT the Home Depot paint-mixing counter in an exasperated stalemate, paper samples of "Village Square" and "Toffee Crunch" shades clenched in our fists.

Then she said it. "I ... hate ... you." Her voice was flat and even, as frustration culminated in those three words. Then, to the horror of the salesman helping us, Tracey burst into tears.

Uh-oh. Maybe living with my sister wasn't such an inspired idea.

It was May 2008 and we were two weeks away from moving into the two-bedroom condo we'd bought together in Clarendon. How was I going to survive living with my younger sibling of three and a half years if we couldn't agree on how many gallons of paint we needed for our pad? But the contracts were signed, the mortgage loan ratified — I looked at Tracey and knew there was no turning back.

Of course, if I'd consulted roommate and sibling relationship experts before signing the lease, they would've predicted potential disaster.

"Our relationships with our siblings are very passionate ones," says Dorothy Rowe, a psychologist whose book, "My Dearest Enemy, My Dangerous Friend" ($18, Routledge), focuses on the dynamics of sibling relationships. "We care enormously about what our siblings think of us: their praise, their approval," Rowe says. "At the same time, we're scared of their criticism. If you've grown up together, your sibling knows just what to say to upset you, tease you or really hurt you. It's a very complicated relationship that doesn't get simpler as you get older."......

05/28/09 Reader Submitted Comments: Lets get this out to all our E-mail Contacts (The Liberal Media Wont Report That......)

Guess our national leaders didn't expect this, hmm?

On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton , Colorado , was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. What he said to our national leaders during this special session of Congress was painfully truthful.

They were not prepared for what he was to say, nor was it received well. It needs to be heard by every parent, every teacher, every politician, every sociologist, every psychologist, and every so-c alled expert! These courageous words spoken by Darrell Scott are powerful, penetrating, and deeply personal. There is no doubt that God sent this man as a voice crying in the wilderness. The following is a portion of the transcript:

"Since the dawn of creation there has been both good & evil in the hearts of men and women. We all contain the seeds of kindness or the seeds of violence. The death of my wonderful daughter, Rachel Joy Scott, and the deaths of that heroic teacher, and the other eleven children who died must not be in vain. Their blood cries out f or answers.

"The first recorded act of violence was when Cain slew his brother Abel out in the field. The villain was not the club he used.. Neither was it the NCA, the National Club Association. The true killer was Cain, and the reason for the murder could only be found in Cain's heart.

"In the days tha t followed the Columbine tragedy, I was amazed at how quickly fingers began to be pointed at groups such as the NRA. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a hunter. I do not even own a gun. I am not here to represent or defend the NRA - because I don't believe that they are responsible for my daughter's death. Therefore I do not believe that they need to be defended. If I believed they had anything to do with Rachel's murder I would be their strongest opponent.

I'am here today to declare that Columbine was not just a tragedy -- it was a spiritual event that should be forcing us to look at where the real blame lies! Much of the blame lies here in this room. Much of the blame lies behind the pointing fingers of the accusers themselves. I wrote a poem just four nights ago that expresses my feelings best.

Your laws ignore our deepest needs,
Your words are empty air.
You've stripped away our heritage,
Yo u've outlawed simple prayer.
Now gunshots fill our classrooms,
And precious children die.
You seek for answers everywhere,
And ask the question "Why?"
You regulate restrictive laws,
Through legislative creed.
And yet you fail to understand,
That God is what we need!

" Men and women are three-part beings. We all consist of body, mind, and spiri t. When we refuse to acknowledge a third part of our make-up, we create a void that allows evil, prejudice, and hatred to rush in and wreak havoc. Spiritual presences were present within our educational
Systems for most of our nation's history. Many of our major colleges began as theological seminaries. This is a historical fact. What has happened to us as a nation? We have refused to honor God, and in so doing, we open the doors to hatred and violence. And when something as terrible as Columbine's tragedy occurs -- politicians immediately look for a scapegoat such as the NRA. They immediately seek to pass more restrictive laws that contribute to erode away our personal and private liberties. We do not need more restrictive laws. Eric and Dylan would not have been stopped by metal detectors. No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts.

"As my son Craig lay under that table in the school library and saw his two friends murdered before his very eyes, he did not hesitate to pray in school. I defy any law or politician to deny him that right! I challenge every young person in America , and around the world, to realize that on April 20, 1999, at Columbine High School prayer was brought back to our schools. Do not let the many prayers offered by those students be in vain. Dare to move into the new millennium with a sacred disregard for legislation that violates your God-given right to communicate with Him. To those of you who would point your finger at the NRA -- I give to you a sincere challenge. Dare to examine your
Own heart before casting the first stone!

My daughter's death will not be in vain! The young people of this country will not allow that to happen!"

Do what the media did not - - let the nation hear this man's speech.. Please send this out to everyone you can. God Bless

Connecticut says farewell to the Dennis'

Posted in May 28th, 2009

by Claudette Rothman in Connecticut, Events

Socialite Tonya Redding Dennis and husband JC

This past Memorial weekend, a Greenwich, Connecticut mansion was the tony setting for a farewell party for Fairfield County socialite, Tonya Redding Dennis and her husband JC Dennis.

The soirée consisted of approximately 60 of the Dennis' closest friends and family members from Fairfield and Hartford Counties in Connecticut, and New York City.

After living in one too many snow storms, the Dennis' decided it was time to say goodbye to the cold New England winters and move to the south, where Ms. Dennis is originally from.

The event, which was hosted by fellow Fairfield County socialites and dear friends, Marilyn Ford, Brenda Culpepper and Shirley Smith, was held at a Backcountry Greenwich estate, which was befitting for the quintessential socialite and her husband.

(Seated) JC and Tonya Dennis

Standing, hostesses (l-r) Brenda Culpepper, Shirley Smith and Marilyn Ford

Attending the event was one of the Dennis' closest friends for the last 30 years Charles "Shep" Shepherd who said, "A farewell to JC and Tonya is never a farewell because the community of family, friends, brothers and sisters they have are always there."

"It is because they are so unique and they help bind us all together even more," Shep continued. "So it's just a matter of miles and months until we get back together to see them and to celebrate."

The couple, who have been married for over 29 years and have one child, 27-year-old Stratford Dennis, said although they have only been in Fairfield County for less than 5 years, it always felt like home.

Long time friend of the Dennis', Brenda Culpepper said, "Tonya created the concept of 'sistah friend.'"

For the Greenwich Diva this is not farewell to the Dennis', it is just "see you soon, in different locations."

School Opening Status - Western Middle School and Glenville classes at Western Middle School will remain open and on schedule, tomorrow, Friday, May 29, 2009.

H1N1 Cases – The State Department of Health has confirmed 15 additional cases of H1N1 flu virus in school-aged children at Western Middle School. These 15 new cases plus the 11 previously confirmed cases, amount to 26 confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus at Western Middle School. Please note that, per the Greenwich Department of Health’s May 28, 2009 release, there are 32 confirmed cases in Greenwich residents – only 26 of those 32 are from the Greenwich Public Schools. Also, according to the Greenwich Dept. of Health release – all of the WMS students have recovered or are recovering and none have required hospitalization.

Absenteeism – 156 Western Middle School students out of 492 were absent from school today. 15 Glenville students out of 108 located at Western were absent today.

GDoH Attendance Guidance - The Greenwich Department of Health has issued an important notice with School Attendance Guidance for ALL schools. It has been posted to the web site – all parents and staff are urged to read the memo and to adhere to the guidelines. In summary, the guidance states that anyone exhibiting flu-like symptoms should remain at home for a minimum of seven days.

Staff members throughout the District have been instructed to send students exhibiting any flu-like symptoms to the school nurse and nurses have been instructed to send students with flu-like symptoms home from school. Additionally, District and school custodial staff have been instructed to wipe down surfaces including door knobs, railings and other hardware, etc. with an increased vigilance.

Activities and sports - Generally, if students and staff are not exhibiting symptoms and are in school – then activities and sports will continue as scheduled. There may be exceptions made on a case-by-case basis. Today’s Western Middle School Track Meet in Weston was canceled primarily due to the fact that there were not enough students in attendance at school to participate in the meet.

RECAP OF EVENTS/DECISIONS:

* 5/27/09 Meeting with Health Professionals – The Greenwich Department of Health and the Greenwich Public Schools conducted a meeting at Western Middle School to provide information and answer health-related questions. State and local health professionals and school District administrators participated, including Dr. Matthew Cartter - State Epidemiologist for the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health, Dr. James Sabetta - Greenwich Hospital Infectious Disease Physician, Caroline Baisley – Director of Health for Greenwich Department of Health, Tom Mahoney – Director of Special Clinical Services and Public Information Officer, and Dr. Betty J. Sternberg – Greenwich Superintendent of Schools

The meeting was taped and will air on Cablevision’s Education Access Channel 78. Please check the GPS web site for the schedule after Thursday, May 28, 2009.

* Absenteeism as of 5/27/09 – 211 Western Middle School students out of 492 were absent from school on 5/27/09. This is less than on Tuesday, May, 26, 2009 (229 were absent) and Friday, May 22, 2009 (260 were absent). 20 Glenville students out of 108 located at Western were absent today (less than Tuesday at 33).

* As of 5/26/09 there were 11 confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus in the Greenwich Public Schools. Please note that, per the Greenwich Department of Health’s May 26, 2009 release, there were 16 confirmed cases in Greenwich residents – only 11 of those 16 were from the Greenwich Public Schools.

* Activities/Sports - Regarding interschool activities and sports: Generally, if students and staff are not exhibiting symptoms and are in school – then activities and sports will continue as scheduled. There may be exceptions made on a case-by-case basis.

* On May 25, 2009 - The following are exceptions that have been made primarily due to the fact that either the teacher running the program and/or a number of students participating are ill and are at home:
- 5th grade Orientation at Western Middle School for New Lebanon School, Glenville School, Parkway School and Hamilton Avenue School students has been postponed
- Glenville’s Spring Concert at Western Middle School has been postponed.
- Adventure Racing for Western Middle School and Eastern Middle School students scheduled for 5/27/09 has been canceled.

* On May 23, 2009: 8th Grade Washington D.C. trip canceled - After consultation with and as recommended by State and Local Departments of Health and physicians, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Betty J. Sternberg, canceled the Western Middle School 8th Grade trip to Washington, D.C planned for May 26-29, 2009. Dr. Sternberg said, “While this was a very difficult decision, after a thorough review of all of the facts, consultation with several health professionals at the State and local level, and two meetings with Western Middle School parents, we have decided that it is in the best interest of our students to cancel the trip.”

* Given the information available by May 23, 2009, regarding the rate and severity of student illnesses, the school medical advisor and Greenwich Hospital infectious disease physician recommended that the district cancel or postpone the Washington trip.

* By May 23, 2009, Nineteen (19), 6th grade, WMS students had experienced flu-like symptoms, were tested by a healthcare provider using the quick flu test and received negative results – these students are sick but not with a flu.

* By May 23, 2009, Fourteen (14), 6th grade, WMS students have experienced flu-like symptoms, were tested by a healthcare provider using the quick flu test and received positive results – these students are sick with a flu but at this time we do not know if it is H1N1 – the State Department of Health is conducting additional tests to determine if their flu is the H1N1 flu virus.

* On By May 23, 2009, The District did not expect to have the results of these H1N1 tests until mid to late week the following week.

* By May 23, 2009, additional cases of students with flu like symptoms at WMS have not been reported to the school or Town Dept of Health.

* On May 22, 2009, there were an uncommonly high number of absences at WMS, however, most did not appear to be due to student illnesses.

* By Wednesday, May 20, 2009, approximately 55 students had been to the infirmary at Nature’s Classroom and 19 were sick enough (multiple symptoms, fever) to send home, the other students were experiencing a range of symptoms but were not sick enough to have parents called to pick them up.

* On Monday, May 18, 2009, 130, WMS 6th graders went to Nature’s Classroom – Although it was unknown to the school at the time, one of the students had been diagnosed (using the quick test) with a “flu” and was placed on a short course of anti-viral medication. The student then reported to the school on Monday, not exhibiting any symptoms and boarded the bus for the trip. The District was unaware of any of the student’s status until Thursday, May 21, 2009.

* The decision to cancel the remainder of the Nature’s Classroom trip was made using the following considerations:
- distance from home if more students became ill
- the severity of illness in some of the sick students
- the higher probability of infection given the living situations (multiple students in bed/bunk rooms)
- amount of activity required of students
- ability to dedicate staff to students who were ill
- national attention about the spread of H1N1

UPDATE ON H1N1 INFLUENZA
16 New Cases

Today the State of Connecticut announced that Greenwich has 16 new confirmed cases of H1N1 (swine flu). A total of 32 confirmed cases have now been identified among Greenwich residents. Fifteen of the new cases involve school age children from Western Middle School. All of the students have recovered or are recovering. None required hospitalization. Director of Health Caroline Baisley said, “We anticipated there would be additional cases of H1N1 since it had been established that the virus was circulating in the community.” The Department of Health expects there will be additional cases of H1N1 in Greenwich as the virus remains at elevated levels in the northeast United States.

Like other flu viruses, novel H1N1 flu spreads from an infected person to others primarily from coughing or sneezing. Sometimes people become infected by touching a surface with the virus on it and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Because people with novel H1N1 are thought to be infectious from one day before showing symptoms up to seven days after becoming ill, anyone who experiences influenza-like-illness (ILI) should:

Stay home and not attend school or work for a minimum of 7 days even if symptoms resolve sooner

Stay home from school or work until at least 24 hours after all symptoms have resolved

Symptoms of Influenza-like illness
Fever (100°F or 37.7°C) with cough or sore throat
Other symptoms may include – headache, runny or stuffy nose,
body aches or chills, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

Residents are reminded to utilize stringent infection control measures to reduce the spread of influenza, including but not limited to:

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or the crook of your elbow
Wash your hands often with soap and water; use alcohol based hand sanitizer if water is not available
Try not to touch your mouth, nose or eyes
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Stay home from school, work and other group activities if you are sick
