05/28/09 Town of Greenwich Health Director Caroline Calderone Baisley expects more confirmed swine flu cases in the days ahead

School officials said 211 Western students, or roughly 40 percent, were absent Wednesday, down from 229 Tuesday and 260 Friday. In addition, eight staff members called out sick Wednesday, down from 13 Friday.

Parents bugged over handling of flu

Despite resistance from parents, school officials stood by their decision Wednesday to call off a trip to Washington, D.C., because of swine flu concerns while still keeping school open this week.

At a meeting with more than 50 parents Wednesday at Western Middle School, a state health official said it would be too disruptive to close the school several weeks before the end of the year in an effort to mitigate the spread of the H1N1 virus.....

.....While dozens of districts in the region have reported H1N1 infections in recent weeks, Western's sixth-grade trip last week was one of the few incidents in the country -- and the only known case in Connecticut -- in which an outbreak occurred during an extended field trip, he said.....

.....Still, some parents at the meeting Wednesday continued to voice frustration over the decision to cancel the eighth-grade trip.

"I think our kids will resent the fact that they are not being allowed to do something they've been looking forward to for a very long time," said WMS mother Kim Sitarz. "There will be tremendous anger and disappointment."

There were no new cases of H1N1 infections reported in Greenwich Wednesday. To date, there have been 16 confirmed cases of swine flu in town, including 11 public schools students, all of whom attend WMS, according to state and town health officials. ......
