11/10/09 Wealthy Greenwich Handbag Maker To Be The Freshest Meat In Prison

Bourke Sentenced to One Year in Azerbaijan Bribery Case

Wall Street Journal
Chad Bray ‎

NEW YORK—Frederic Bourke Jr., co-founder of the Dooney & Bourke handbag company, was sentenced Tuesday to one year and one day in prison after he was convicted of criminal charges in July in an alleged scheme to bribe Azerbaijan government officials.

At a hearing Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin in Manhattan also ordered Mr. Bourke, 63, to pay a $1 million fine and to serve three years supervised release after he completes his prison term.

The sentence was below the range of 57 months to 71 months recommended under federal sentencing guidelines. Prosecutors had sought a sentence of as much as 10 years in prison.

The judge said, after a prosecution that dragged on for many years, it was "still not entirely clear to me whether Mr. Bourke is a victim, or a crook, or a little bit of both."

However, the judge said prison time was necessary to send a message to persons who might violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. "Such bribery must and will result in a jail sentence," the judge said.

In July, a jury found Mr. Bourke guilty of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Travel Act and making false statements to federal law-enforcement officials. He was acquitted of a single count of money-laundering conspiracy.

Harold Haddon, Mr. Bourke's lawyer, said Mr. Bourke plans to appeal his conviction, saying he believed the judge had imposed "a compassionate sentence" in the case. Mr. Haddon had sought probation in the matter.

"There is a substantial chance of winning on appeal," Mr. Haddon said. Mr. Bourke was granted bail pending appeal, which his lawyers expect to file as early as Tuesday.

Last month, Judge Scheindlin rejected Mr. Bourke's motion to set aside the conviction.

Prosecutors from the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan had alleged Mr. Bourke was aware of an improper plot by Viktor Kozeny, president and chairman of Oily Rock Group Ltd., to bribe Azeri officials in the late 1990s to allow Mr. Kozeny's investment consortium to buy a stake in the State Oil Co. of the Azerbaijan Republic, or Socar.

Mr. Bourke met Mr. Kozeny when they were neighbors in Aspen, Colo., where Mr. Kozeny allegedly convinced Mr. Bourke to invest in his scheme, prosecutors said.

Mr. Kozeny, who is facing federal criminal charges as well as state larceny charges, is in the Bahamas, where he so far has successfully fought extradition to the U.S.

Prosecutors have said Mr. Kozeny earned the nickname the "Pirate of Prague" because of underhanded dealings in the Czech Republic during privatization of industries there in the early or mid-1990s.

11/10/09 The Himes Times: Healthcare

November 10th, 2009

Dear Friends,

On any given day, the Capitol's columns, marble and statues imbue the place with a sense of history. Last Saturday night, it was overwhelming. You could almost hear the whispers of the legislators who created Social Security in 1935. You might have glimpsed the spirits of those who established Medicare 30 years later.

These programs lifted generations of seniors out of poverty and sickness. Yes, they pose serious financial challenges. But how do we value the peace-of-mind, health, and comfort of the many millions who built, taught and fought for this country?

Saturday night, the House of Representatives passed the Affordable Health Care for America Act, achieving a goal that had eluded seven presidents. I was proud to be a yes vote. Proud because it is well past time for the greatest, wealthiest country on the planet to join every other industrialized nation in offering each of its citizens access to basic health care.
Himes_Healthcare Proud because you don't need to be a business genius to see that exploding health care costs are bankrupting our state and federal governments and businesses large and small. Proud because after years of irresponsible fiscal management, Congress had the courage to find ways to pay for this legislation such that the Congressional Budget Office says it actually reduces our deficit over time.

The fight is hardly won. The Senate must act. The bill can certainly be improved. I hope that the remaining weeks of this process craft a final bill that is more aggressive on overall cost reduction and on actually improving the health of the American people. But I am encouraged that we are tackling the tough issues, and I urge you to be in contact with your senators and my office to let us know your thoughts and concerns.

Best regards,

Jim

11/09/09 Greenwich Resident Ned Lamont's Big Bucks Makes Jodi Rell Run Away

The Greenwich Time Missed This News Flash......

Conn. governor decides not to seek another term

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell says she will not seek re-election next year.

She made the announcement in a news conference Monday at the statehouse in Hartford.

Rell has been governor since 2004, when John Rowland resigned in a corruption probe. In 2006 voters made her the first Republican woman elected to the post.

State budget problems have driven her job approval.

HARTFORD tearful Gov. M. Jodi Rell abruptly announced Monday she will not run for re-election, bringing to an end a 25-year political career that saw her rise from an obscure small-town politician to a figure credited with restoring faith in a scandal-scarred office.

In a stunning announcement during a hastily called news conference in her office, Rell said.....
.....her predecessor and former running mate John G. Rowland, resigned under the shadow of an impeachment investigation in July 2004. He eventually pleaded guilty to federal corruption charges.

Rell served 10 years in the state House of Representatives, representing her hometown of Brookfield, before becoming Rowland's running mate in 1994. For nine-and-a-half years, she ......

....."I met today with our budget chief and our sales-tax revenue continues to decline," Rell said during a brief question-and-answer period in her Capitol office after her announcement. "That's why I need to focus, right now, my attention on getting our budget in balance and dealing with the Legislature." Rell said that she's sure Republicans can hold the Governor's Residence after she retires. Right after her news conference, Lt. Gov. Michael Fedele, of Stamford, told reporters in the hall outside Rell's office that he expects to be a candidate and anticipates Rell's support.
"This is something that we've all been expecting," Fedele said.....
.....On the Democratic side, James A. Amann of Milford, former speaker of the House, is the only officially announced candidate for the party's gubernatorial nomination. But several Democrats have filed exploratory committees: Stamford Mayor Dannel P. Malloy; Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz; Ridgefield First Selectman Rudolph P. Marconi; state Sen. Gary LeBeau of East Hartford; and Ned Lamont, who won the 2006 Democratic primary against U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman.

On the Republican side, House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero Jr., R-Norwalk, is exploring a candidacy.....

This book is for the amazing female pioneers who shattered the glass ceiling --- a practical and inspiring guide to figuring out what's next. Boomer women have been trailblazers throughout their professional lives. Now that their careers are losing their edge and children leave the nest, these women are ready to do for retirement what they did for the working world. The first book from The Transition Network focuses on the unique needs of women as they explore new possibilities and redesign the old model of retirement.

Gail Rentsch is a founding member of The Transition Network. In 2000, she recalls being among some 20 other women gathered to help build an organization where women could share their concerns and aspirations as they moved from their primary careers to something else. Gail retired from her primary career in 2004, after 24 years as founder and president of a successful, New York City-based public relations agency with clients that included book publishers, authors, non-profit institutions and corporations. Gail is also the co-author of The Whole Horse Catalog, first published by Simon & Schuster in 1977. That book has gone through three revisions, multiple printings and remains in print today. It is Gail's hope that this new book will last nearly as long.

Just Books is pleased to welcome Marina Julia Neary, an award-winning historical essayist, multilingual arts & entertainment journalist, published poet, playwright, actress, dancer and choreographer, as she introduces her first novel Wynfield's Kingdom (Fireship Press, $29.95).

Welcome to 1830s Bermondsey, London's most notorious slum, a land of gang wars, freak shows and boxing matches. Dr. Grant, a disgraced physician, adopts Wynfield, a ten-year old thief savagely battered by the gang leader for insubordination. The boy grows up to be a slender, idealistic opium addict who worships Victor Hugo. By day he steals and resells guns from a weapons factory. By night he amuses filthy crowds with his adolescent girlfriend, a fragile witch with wolfish eyes. Their tragicomic idyll ends when Wynfield falls under the spell of an elusive benefactress and leaves his bohemian, semi-criminal circle to follow her to Westminster. There, in the company of blue-blooded outcasts, he learns the secret of his origin and the role he is destined to play in the history of England. Invoking the ghosts of English anarchists, Guy Fawkes and Oliver Cromwell, Wynfield enters the world's biggest tavern - the Parliament, where he meets the most ruthless boy gang in the world - the British aristocracy. Using the mixture of chemicals, satire and horror, Wynfield stages an unforgettable performance and subdues the ruling class - if only for one day.

11/08/09 Greenwich Resident Ned Lamont: Entrepreneurship to Aid Connecticut Economy?

By Matt Kiernan, CCSU Recorder

http://centralrecorder.com/2009/11/08/entrepreneurship-to-aid-connecticut-economy

CCSU adjunct political science professor Ned Lamont’s lecture Thursday focused on entrepreneurship and how it can contribute to Connecticut’s job market and economy.

“There’s nothing better than starting a small business or working on a small business,” said Lamont to an audience of faculty, students and members of the New Britain community in the Marcus White Living Room.

Lamont recalled the ingenuity of Eli Whitney, who lived in the state and invented the cotton gin. Lamont says Whitney modernized manufacturing and sees no reason why such progress can’t be recreated in today’s economy.

“You have to ask, ‘what happened? Why we are slipping?” said Lamont.

What is required of the state, according to Lamont, is bringing in more jobs and make it appealing for college graduates to remain in Connecticut. If there is an attractive job market, students will be less likely to move into states such as New York and Massachusetts.

“If we don’t get our act together, we’re going to be in a recession a lot longer,” said Lamont.

Lamont believes that Connecticut hasn’t been making smart, long-term investments that will improve itself. He praised President Barack Obama for his “political entrepreneurship,” which he cited the president’s stance on energy and healthcare.

“He is making long-term investments that can make great advances for this country,” said Lamont.

Lamont recalled bringing his son recently to the Department of Motor Vehicles and observed that the procedures are incredibly inconvenient, given the amount of people crowded in the building. He wondered why it wasn’t possible for people to accomplish DMV transactions online, which could be facilitated by technology.

He said that technology is the key to creating more jobs and that although some jobs may be lost in an area due to a rise in technology, a greater number of jobs would be created in another.

Public transportation is a possibility for bringing in more money into the state. The idea of creating a train line to run from Springfield, Mass. to New Haven would provide added revenue to the state and lower costs for travelers.

Making investments in higher education is another important step to improving Connecticut’s economy, according to Lamont. More accessible education means a smarter and skilled workforce.

“They’ve got to be able to think and create and that’s the most important thing,” said Lamont.
