The founders of a New York hedge fund at the center of the Bernard Madoff scandal have begun selling assets as their firm faces massive losses and a slew of lawsuits, sources told The Post.....

The pair recently dumped a shared interest in a Cessna 560XL private jet, according to a person close to the firm.

The duo purchased a one-sixteenth share in the jet in late 2006, giving them between 25 and 50 hours of use a year. Experts estimate the sale saves them a portion of the plane's $200,000 annual maintenance fees, plus $2,000 for each hour of use.

Meanwhile, Tucker - the lesser-known founder of the Madoff-scarred firm - is looking to sell his posh horse farm in Schuylerville, NY, near Saratoga Springs .....

Local Greenwich Sources Tell Greenwich Roundup ....

Hedge fund firm Fairfield Greenwich, which lost more than half of its assets to scummier Bernard Madoff, is in the process of or preparing to winding down operations and could shutter its doors by summer.

The fund, which is headed by Greenwich Resident Walter Noel has been rumored to have cut its staff by 30 - 50% Greenwich Roundup has learned and people familiar with the situation have said that some remaining Fairfield Greenwich employees have been told that they may be let go by late July. Generous severance packages are being offered to keep key staff members on board and quite.

Walter "Feeder Fund" Noel lost a who headed the Fairield Sentry Fund "invested" a whopping $7.5 Billion with his chum Bernard Madoff. Fairfield Greenwich Investors have been lead to believe that there was an additional $6,5 Billion left to pay investors back. This might not be entirely accurate.

While Walter "Feeder Fund" Noel has suspended seeking new investors and has said ,"it retains the staff necessary to seek and recover any available Madoff assets."

The formerly high flying Fairfield Greenwich Group had $7.5 Billion out of $14 Billion in assets invested with Walter Noel chum Bernie Madoff through the firms fund of hedge funds, known as Fairfield Sentry.

Walter Noel who long ago suspended investor redemption requests for non-family members and is now apparently working toward selling off the firms surviving assets held in offshore tax havens.

Also wounded by the Madoff scandal is hedge fund firm Tremont Group run by Mass Mutual . The Rye New York fund also lost more than half of its assets ($3.1 Billion) to Madoff. Press reports last week said that Tremont was in the process of shutting down operations.

Hedge funds that last year ranked as the third-largest shareholder of American Airlines' parent AMR Corp. have sold off nearly their entire position in the company.

Tontine Overseas Associates LLC, an affiliate of Tontine Management, run by Jeffrey Gendell, said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Friday that it had reduced its holdings to 430,702 shares, or just 0.15 percent of AMR's common stock.

Just last March 24, Gendell's funds held nearly 24.3 million shares or 9.7 percent of AMR, behind only Fidelity Management and Primecap Management, according to AMR's proxy.
Since then, the shares have fallen 42 percent, closing Friday at $5.57.

Gendell did not immediately return phone and e-mail messages left at his Greenwich, Conn., office. Fort Worth-based AMR declined to comment.

Hedge funds were once seen as a way for wealthy investors to get better returns by relying on the funds' sophisticated trading models. But they have been hammered by the stock market collapse and suffered their worst year on record in 2008, with hundreds of them shutting down.

The Wall Street Journal reported in November that Gendell was closing two of his four hedge funds because of heavy losses. The newspaper reported Gendell had told investors in a letter that he was "embarrassed" by the funds' performance

Today on the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" "¦ oops, sorry wrong show. You've read about television personality Regis Philbin's house in Greenwich being for sale, but did you know he has bought another, bigger one in the same neighborhood?

Apparently the "Live With Regis and Kelly" host and wife Joy have upgraded from 5,000-plus square feet to around 13,500 square feet and have more land. The price tag was in the low-$7 million range......

Holy cow, nothing gets past Greenwich Time real estate reporters. It reveals today for the first time that Regis Philbin has bought a new house! They got that right (although he got less land, not more than his old house on Meeting House) and a lot more space: 13, 661 sf, and paid $7.2 million for the place on XX North Stanwich Road, but he bought it last summer in July, not February of this year. The last listing price for this 1997 house, by the way, was $7.995 million but if memory serves it sat on the market for a long time at a higher price tag. I’ll check tomorrow.

The article says that Philbin’s unwanted house is priced above $5 million. Again, my memory may be faulty, but I thought it had been reduced to the 3s. But perhaps that’s just where I thought it should be priced, not where it’s currently priced. I’ll call his show and suggest it, if he still has a show. Does he?

Pietro Baggio was arrested about 4:15 p.m. Feb. 6 and charged with possession of narcotics and intent to distribute narcotics, police said.

Fees increase for parking permits

If you’re a resident looking to get a parking permit for a commuter lot in town, you’ll be paying 5% more than last year.


Parking Services Director Allen Corry said last week that despite the increase, Greenwich’s prices are still considered low compared to neighboring towns.

With the increase, permits for Island Beach, Horseneck and Town Hall parking lots will cost $279 for the year, as will all other outdoor train station parking permits in town. Permitted parking in the West End lot in Old Greenwich, behind CVS, will cost $191. Indoor parking at Greenwich Plaza is going up to $488.

Dear Greenwich Roundup,

Your Moxley timeline appears to be excellent. The only question I have is: Shouldn't the Willimam Kennedy Smith trial be included? My understanding is that this trial was important in turning attention back to "those other Kennedy cousins" and also the rumor that Kennedy Smith may have been in Greenwich at the time of the Moxley murder (later proved false). This caused D. Dunne to go to Greenwich to investigate (and I know he involved Fuhrman which was more after the fact).

I thought this was a significant trigger in restarting the investigation - though it appears Mr. Levitt's work was at least as important. Just a thought.

The question comes down to: what were the key factors in re-starting the investigation? or kicking it into high gear?

I did not live in Greenwich at the time so I never heard about the William Kennedy Smith rumor.

A little Internet research has revealed the following......

In 1991, Dominick Dunne covered the William Kennedy Smith rape trial, and for some unknown reason, Dunne was intrigued by the rumor that William Kennedy Smith was at the home of Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel, on the night that Martha Moxley was murdered. This false rumor is responsible for generating a level of publicity which lead to the publication of A Season in Purgatory" the fictional account of the Moxley murder. What is a Season of Purgatory really all about? According to Maureen Dowd, of the New York Times, "Dominick Dunne takes all the most chilling character flaws of three generations of Kennedys and compresses them into one creepy plot line." What a brilliant synopsis, but for the sake of accuracy, it is important to note that Dominick Dunne compresses character flaws that are more imagined than real.

So I would tend to agree with you that the William Kennedy Smith trial was a significant factor and should be included in the timeline.

However, it would interesting to see what other long time Greenwich residents remember about a William Kennedy Smith rumor, causing Dominic Dunne coming to town to investigated.

As for the source of the Martha Moxley timeline, I wish I could take credit for it. The timeline is an excellent piece of citizen journalism.

Dear Chris,

What your research is very flawed and "fails" to show was that in the entire history of the Town of Greenwich no traditional or new media reporter has ever had to file a freedom of information request to be placed on any Town Of Greenwich Press Release List.

Further, Chris if you had done a better job of "researching" this mater you would find that there was only one email sent from Greenwich Roundup and it was in response to an Email sent by Greenwich Board Of Education Director Kim Eves.

If you want a copy of the Email you can get a copy for your "research" it only costs a quarter for the one page.

But I am afraid that you be be very disappointed, because there really wont be a smoking gun for your little "research" project. The problem is Greenwich Roundup is very lazy and basically took one of his blog posts and cut it into his emailed response to Kim Eves.

Chris, you are also very missed informed about there being a big "accredited" journalism corps in the Town Of Greenwich. Just what organization do you think that these local reporters have joined. Do you think the State Of Connecticut is handing out some kind of license?

Chris, you are wrong to think there is any such thing as the famous "press pass" It isn't something a reporter carries around like a police badge.

A reporter is a reporter, because he or she reports.

Ex-Greenwich Time Managing Editor Jim Zebora was working in a record shop, and he started sending articles in and the rest is history.

Chris, for your information a press pass It is issued by a specific organization for security reasons. Usually reporters, or the organizations they work for, apply for the "press passes" from the "news maker".

So, for intance...

Chris if you got a job working for the Greenwich Time covering Greenwich Hospital. Then Greenwich Hospital might want to give you a visitors or press pass that will allow you to gain access to places and events where the press is allowed to go, but the general public isn't.

I could probably flash another company's press pass around, or an old birth announcement tucked into a plastic sleeve hanging from a lanyard around my neck, and zip right pass you and talk with Bernard Madoff's little chum. At least, that always seems to work on TV...

Lastly Chris, I would just like to point out one more flawed area of your "research". You seem to have been flasely been given the impression that there were a lot of long phone calls and voice messages, that "keep them from doing their work and don’t serve the interests of the community at large".

Chris you are never going to get one of those Fancy nancy "press passes" if you keep getting the story all wrong.

There was one voice mail left for kim eves and two messages left for Betty Sternberg left over a four day period.

None of the calls were reurned. Eventually, Kim Eves did send an email to me that was carbon copied to Betty Sternberg and Carol Desalvo.

Betty Sternberg then screwed up and hit "reply all" instead of "reply" when she started ordering town employees to make a federal case out of a simple request to be added to the emailed press release list.

When Kim Eves And Town Attorney John Wayne Fox foundout that Betty Sternberg had hit the reply all button they picked up the phone and talked to Greenwich Roundup.

Chris maybe you should focus a little more on not serving alcohol to children, instead of spending all of your free time "researching" Greenwich Roundup.

....Christoph Kull, an owner of Wine Wise, also pledged tougher ID checks. He said a machine will be installed to electronically check IDs to make sure they’re legitimate.

STAMFORD -- A Superior Court judge on Friday denied two defendants' requests to enter a program that would have erased drug charges stemming from the 2004 overdose death of a town teenager.

Jason Cunningham, 24, and Savanna Jean Lamotte, 23, both Greenwich natives, submitted applications for the diversionary program after being charged late last year with possession of a narcotic, a felony that could result in up to seven years in prison......

Speaking about Cunningham, Applegate cited a prior drug conviction for possession of marijuana and pointed to questionable postings on his MySpace Web site involving drug use.....

Tesei asks unions to help cut town's expenses
Black Friday it wasn't. On a day when many civil servants expected the town to announce layoffs, First Selectman Peter Tesei instead sat down with union leaders Friday to discuss potential concessions such as a wage freeze that he said could help save jobs.

Tesei met with representatives of Teamsters Local 456, the Greenwich Municipal Employees Association and the Laborers' International Union of North America Local 136 for just over an hour in his office to discuss his plan to eliminate up to 70 positions from the 1,020-person, non-school workforce.

Among the concessions town officials presented to the unions for consideration was a wage freeze, as well as a moratorium on "step increases" in salary that are based on years of service.....

Town man elected to head national Audubon

A town man with years of experience as a conservationist has been elected to lead the board of directors for one of the nation's best-known nature and wildlife conservation groups.

But Town Hall, which could put off doing a new revaluation until 2010, would be wise to wait. New assessments now could result in an artificially low Grand List that would exacerbate already considerable financial difficulties the town is experiencing. Joseph's Dream Comes True...

And we're not talking about the pathetically marginalized Joe Pisani here, the failed and fired former editor of the Local Rag, more generally known as Yellowwich Time. No, dear reader, your scribe is referencing the Biblical Joseph, eleventh son of the Patriarch Jacob, who was sold into slavery by his brothers as a last-minute alternative to killing him outright (good thing that caravan showed up when it did!). The reason for the brothers' actions was that they didn't like Joseph's dream, vividly recounted by him in front of them all, in which his brothers' sheaves of wheat bowed down and paid homage to Joseph's sheaf. What a sanctimonious whippersnapper young Joseph was! Clearly what his brothers were contemplating would have been deemed justifiable fratricide in any modern (or ancient) court of law.

But God had other plans. As you no doubt remember, Joseph then had many adventures in Egypt, including his non-affair with Potiphar's wife, which nonetheless earned him a long stretch in prison (sort of like the late unlamented prior management of Yellowwich Time, Potiphar tended to go with the woman's side of the story, regardless of where the truth lay). There, of course, Joseph carried on in the dream business, interpreting those of his fellow prisoners. Eventually, his talent came to Pharoah's attention, and the rest, as they say, is legend. Including, of course, Joseph's brothers bowing low and doing him homage when the wheat supply ran low back home in Canaan. So there. Who says that dreams don't come true?

The relevance of all this to 21st-century Greenwich is that the once proud and mighty Yellowwich Time has now knuckled under to the once-puny Greenwich Citizen. Just as in Pharoah's dream the lean cattle swallowed up the fat ones, and just as David bested Goliath, our longtime local weekly paper's boss, Michelle McAbee, has replaced the ousted John Dunster as publisher of Yellowwich Time and The Advocate. Go, Michelle! About time Hearst got around to cleaning house in our neck of the woods.

The downfall of the Local Rag can be traced to 1974, when it was sold to the family who owned The Advocate in Stamford. They then sold it to Times Mirror a few years later, who in turn sold it to Tribune, who in turn sold it to Hearst. Under the inauspicious leadership of Bill Rowe (who named his yacht the "Rowe Boat" - isn't he just too cute for words?), the paper lost any semblance of impartiality, and began to slant and/or ignore any news that suggested Greenwich might not be Disneyland East. From there, it was a short step down the slippery slope to the point where truth no longer mattered, and then it was that your scribe told Bill Rowe just to go ahead and change the color of the masthead from green to yellow to reflect the quality of the journalism he was publishing. Rowe choked on his martini, and has never spoken to your scribe since that day.

But it's a new day in Town, part of the "100 Days of Change" promised by Hearst. As loyal readers of this column know, April 1st is the drop-dead date for those who don't take the proffered buyout, and one certainly hopes that retread editor Bruce Hunter, widely known as an alter ego of Joe Pisani, will fade back into obscurity by then, if not before.

And thus, dear reader, we may all hope to see some semblance of truth-in-journalism restored to our fair Town this spring. True, the Local Rag will no doubt die, to be resurrected as a local edition of the Connecticut Post, and true, the Citizen will likely take over as the real estate newspaper of record here in Greenwich. But finally, the citizens of our fair community will no longer be able to joke about the Local Rag being published in the basement of Town Hall, since it will be printed in Bridgeport instead - as, in fact, it already is.

Your scribe wishes Ms. McAbee well in her new position. One hopes she will restore journalistic integrity to Greenwich, where it has long been absent, and perhaps find us some reporters who know how to use and spell the English language. If they can also show some independence of thought and action, that would be a bonus. Too long has the real news gone unreported in this Town. Perhaps, dear reader, that is about to change. Your scribe devoutly hopes so.

Himes says stimulus may help businesses

As Congress continues to debate the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, local business groups have told U.S. Congressman Jim Himes (D-4) that they want small businesses to get the help they need to stay afloat, and for government spending to be reined in.

The bill, which is designed to serve as a stimulus package for the economy, will give an immediate boost to the economy through spending, Mr. Himes told a crowd at a breakfast meeting organized by the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce last Thursday. It has a five-year carryback for net operating losses, giving businesses more time to claim a loss and having the ability to reduce those net losses by 10%.

Tax breaks for businesses are a part of the bill to encourage long-term investment with short-term spending incentives, Mr. Himes added, but congressional Republicans are demanding more. He said there needs to be tax incentives for businesses, but they have to make sense.

“The reality is that some kinds of tax cuts and some spending can provide a stimulus and other kinds of tax cuts and spending do not provide a stimulus,” said Mr. Himes, a Cos Cob resident. “Small businesses employ the majority of people in the country and it’s fair and wise to look at ideas that will help small businesses keep and expand their staffs and help the people who own those small businesses.”

Financiers aim to spare schools from budget cuts

Facing a $5-million shortfall, the Board of Estimate and Taxation’s Budget Committee is looking for cuts, but aiming to avoid taking money from the public schools.

In December, the school board approved a $127-million budget, and while the possibility exists that cuts could be made to it, budget committee chairman Michael Mason said he hopes to avoid that, instead finding savings in other departments. The proposed townwide budget for 2009-10 is $341 million.

“You know we have a $5-million window,”Mr. Mason told school officials last week. “We’re going to be looking for help from other areas of the town to try and make all of this work,” he added.
