GREENWICH — The town's Fair Rent Commission met for the first time Monday, laying the groundwork to mediate disputes between landlords and tenants in the future.
A fair rent commission aims to helps renters address issues with their landlords before things end up in court, particularly complaints about excessive rent increases.
A state law passed in 2022 mandated that any Connecticut town with at least 25,000 residents establish one of these commissions. Greenwich was last among those required to establish its commission when it did so in March.
Fair Rent Commissions have the authority to block severe rent increases and conduct investigations, but town officials do not anticipate needing to use those powers often in Greenwich....
