School board weighs cost savings in GHS auditorium project
The school board faces some difficult decisions over the next two weeks as members assess a menu of cost-saving options that could significantly change the scope of the high school auditorium project.

The Board of Education will consider eliminating or reducing some key features of the renovation and expansion project, while potentially adding other features, in an effort to come up with the most cost-efficient plan.

The effort comes after preliminary cost estimates showed the overall price would be more than 20 percent higher than projected under the original building specifications. According to that estimate, construction costs would reach more than $28 million, up from the earlier projection of less than $23.5 million.

Susannah Chase remembered at annual run
One day after what would have been her 35th birthday, about 300 runners, family members and friends gathered at Greenwich Point for an annual fundraising run to remember Greenwich High School graduate Susannah Chase, who was murdered in Colorado 12 years ago.

Joining her parents, Julie and Hal, at the 12th annual 5k Susannah's Run, were her four siblings: Carrie, 45, Christy, 43, Stephen, 42, and Doug, 39, and their 10 children.

Christy, who lives in Providence, R.I., said the event brings people together who shared in Susannah's life.....

Verdict overturned in age discrimination lawsuit
Several months after a jury awarded a former town employee $50,000, finding that her contract had been breached, a state Superior Court judge has overturned the verdict and handed a victory to the town.

Bernadette Welch, the town's former deputy human resources director, sued the town in 2006, alleging she was the victim of age discrimination and gender bias. The lawsuit also claimed her contract was breached during her termination.

While a jury did not find evidence of age or gender bias, it did award Welch damages in July, finding there was a breach in her contract due to the town not placing her name on a re-employment list.

Immigration officials: August 'human smuggling' incident was fabricated
It was described as a "human-smuggling bust" and a "botched ransom," but one week after Greenwich police and immigrations agents detained four people stemming from a August melee in Riverside, officials determined the incident was neither.

In fact, the dispute in the Riverside Commons parking lot -- an episode that sparked national media attention -- turned out to be an argument over money between three illegal immigrants who had just entered the country and a driver who requested more money to continue the trip to Willimantic where the passengers' relatives lived.

"Agent Davis (from federal Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency) advised me that the entire kidnapping story was completely fabricated and that the three reported victims had actually just entered the United States illegally," states an Aug. 12 Greenwich police report written by Officer Martin O'Reilly. "After entering the country, family members of the three reported victims made arrangements via legitimate transportation companies to have them driven to Connecticut. An additional fee of $60 per person was requested "¦ the family members refused to make the additional payment when the van arrived, at which time an argument ensued...."

....Greenwich Police Chief David Ridberg said it is his policy not to comment on other agencies' investigations, but wanted residents to know they had no reason to fear the incident.
"I can say that the incident at the (shopping center) had no connections at all to Greenwich other than the fact the involved parties happened to come together just off Exit 5 of I-95," Ridberg said. "There is absolutely no reason for residents to be concerned about any fallout from this incident or similar activity in the future."

One person involved in the August dispute, described as a friend to the driver of the van, fled after hearing police sirens and was not captured. ICE officials did not comment on whether they are actively looking for that person.

Local locks shorn for a good cause
Sisters Shannon, 12, and Olivia Rubin, 9, had thigh-length blond hair when they walked into the hair salon Sunday morning.

"It feels weird," Olivia said to her parents Jeff and Laura as she held her shortened hair. "I don't know if my friends will recognize me."

"It feels so much lighter," Shannon said after the sisters took part in a charitable event Sunday at Hopscotch, at 10 Railroad Ave.

The event was dubbed "Locks of Love," and the goal was to collect hair that can be later used to create wigs for children who have suffered hair loss due to medical conditions or as a result of chemotherapy, Hopscotch co-owner Hisao Oe said......

Eight is enough
As Frank MacEachern reported on Oct. 8, I told our Planning and Zoning Commission that a ninth bank in Cos Cob will make Cos Cob a banking center for all Greenwich residents, who will increasingly drive here for convenience and free parking.....

....A second Peoples Bank in Cos Cob does not increase variety. Greenwich does not need more criss-crossing traffic. Cos Cob does not need nine banks.

Nino Sechi - Greenwich needs more affordable housing, but Byram not the answer
In the past two years, I've attended at least four community meetings on the subject of affordable and workforce housing in Greenwich.

As a senior citizen, a resident of Greenwich for more than 80 years, a homeowner and taxpayer for 50 of those years, I think I know this town fairly well. My own conclusion, from the very introduction of this issue, has been that we need this form of housing -- desperately.

We're almost at a critical stage in this area. Selectman Lin Lavery's recent comment keeps popping up in my head: "By 2020, our 65-and-over population will make up about 30 percent of the town's population." That could present a very serious housing drought for Greenwich seniors and service personnel if we don't arrive at a positive decision and proceed with the construction of affordable housing in our community.

The Byram Neighborhood Association sponsored a meeting last Wednesday evening at St. Paul Episcopal Church to hear what the candidates for the Board of Selectmen had to say about the shortage of senior and workforce housing in Greenwich......

10/09/09 Progress report for GOP senate hopefuls aiming at Dodd

Chris Dodd's dream opponent -- had local Republicans gathered in Windsor cheering at a reception for four of the five GOP would-be senators last night.

Only Peter Schiff was a no-show.

All candidates think Dodd is soley responsible for the current recession. They don't like the stimulus. They hate taxes. One, Tom Foley of Greenwich, doesn't like federally-backed student loans. That's not likely to win many votes in Connecticut.

....I'm going to give Linda McMahon a solid C for her effort, despite the fact that her delivery is about as interesting as listening to an assistant principal read the morning announcements. This could be because she is trying to reshape her public persona, previously on display as a crass character in the wrestling ring.

Still she hit the right Republican notes, including her CEO background. No doubt her grade will improve as she grows more comfortable on the campaign trail.

Foley, who apparently decided to run after worrying that his son might not have the same opportunity as he did, needs to work on his stump speech. Should we be all that worried about the life prospects of a wealthy kid from Greenwich? Foley gets a C-.

There's interesting stuff there -- his return to Ireland as a political-appointee ambassador generations after his family left, working for President Bush in Iraq and building a business from scratch are pretty engaging stories. But what was that business? And what did he do in Iraq that only took seven months to complete?

Still, he gets points for noting the "sense of betrayal and resentment" that Sen. Dodd has created. Foley will only get better and, like McMahon, he has the money to hang in there until he does.....

Carter column causes contention - Bernie Yudain former Greenwich Time editor

Purging my e-mail basket from the flurry of letters responding to the column I did about Jimmy Carter , I counted the replies: 10 thumbs up, 10 thumbs down.

Most were thoughtful, literate letters. A few were downright nasty. Of the latter, I looked up the names of six respondents and discovered none of them had a listing in the Greenwich phone book.

I also noticed that while there was a lot of hot invective, not one addressed the gravamen of that column: Carter's irresponsible statement that Americans are basically racist and that's why so many oppose President Obama's policies. They just expressed outrage that I should dare to indict poor Mr. Carter....

10/09/09 The gloves come off in Greenwich selectmen's debate - Greenwich Time

Democrat Lin Lavery and Republican incumbent Peter Tesei face off during a first selectman candidates debate at Town Hall sponsored by the League of Women Voters on Thursday evening.

Within minutes of the event's start, Lavery, 61, accused Tesei of "deluding" himself if he thought the economic situation in Greenwich was good.

"Fellow members of your own party believe you are deluding yourself," she said before a standing-room-only crowd of about 160 crammed into the Town Hall meeting room for the League of Women Voters of Greenwich-sponsored debate, which also featured selectmen candidates David Theis and Drew Marzullo.....

..."Why was the only answer to lay off people? Why aren't we running a tight ship in the first place?" she asked.

In a jibe at his past chairmanship of the BET, Lavery said former BET leaders should have put money away to prepare for rough times.

Tesei called the firings a "decision of last resort," adding that the town's move to balance its budget earned town residents' approval.....

10/09/09 Motorcyclist killed in backcountry Greenwich accident - Greenwich Time

A motorcyclist was killed Thursday afternoon in a collision with a car on Riversville Road, police said.


The crash happened just after 3 p.m. when police received a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcyclist who was wedged underneath a car.


Police, fire and medics responded, closing off the scene and shutting down a stretch of the roadway between Hycliff Road and Sherwood Avenue north of the Merrit Parkway.


"There was a motor vehicle versus motorcycle accident," said Lt. Daniel Allen, the spokesman for the department. "The motorcyclist has expired from his injuries and his name will not be released until the next of kin is notified....."

October 9, 2009

On Thursday October 8, 2009 at approximately 3:01 PM the Greenwich Police Department received a 911
call reporting a motor vehicle crash involving a car and a motorcycle on Riversville Road. Police and
medic units were dispatched to the area of 390 Riversville Road and found the collision in the middle of the
roadway. The motorcycle rider was found to be deceased upon the arrival of emergency personnel.

The collision involved one rider on a single motorcycle and one operator of a vehicle. The operator of the
vehicle was transported to Greenwich Hospital as a precaution, but did not complain of any significant
injury.

The State Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was notified and responded to the scene of the crash. The
Medical Examiner’s Office removed the deceased and transported him to their office to perform an autopsy
to determine the exact cause of death.

The deceased was a 40-year-old male who was a resident of New York State. His relatives are still being
located at this time. Pending notification of all of the deceased’s family, the operator’s identity has not
been released.

The Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene and is investigating the
collision.

The roadway was closed at the time of the crash and was reopened by approximately 6:30PM.

The town election is just about a month away so the campaign should be going into high gear.

Board of Estimate and Taxation and Board of Education seats are on the ballot, an unchallenged town clerk and some lesser offices fill it out.

So far, there have been a few debates between the top contenders, First Selectman Peter Tesei and his Democratic challenger and current selectman, Lin Lavery.

Looking at the classy campaign propaganda now emanating from the candidates reminds me of how far we've come and how much things have changed since I was a reporter covering politics in town many years ago.

In those days, the principal propaganda vehicle was the public rally. Both parties mounted these open meetings in all parts of town, often heralded by marches in the street, big ads in the newspapers and any other means to promote turnout.....

Starwood Capital Group will wield new influence over South Florida's condo market after it won an auction bid for the Corus Bank condo portfolio from the FDIC.

South Florida's battered condo market just got a major new player.

Starwood Capital Group's deal to acquire a big stake in a basket of condo construction loans and projects of failed Corus Bankshares from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. puts the Greenwich, Conn.-based private equity giant in charge of roughly 21 percent of the unsold condo inventory in greater downtown Miami. That makes Starwood the second largest force in downtown behind Jorge Perez's Miami-based Related Group, which held about 3,000 units at the end of the third quarter, or 36 percent, according to new research from Condo Vultures.

Corus' $4.5 billion portfolio included about $1 billion in loans secured by condo projects in South Florida, almost all in varying states of distress. The rest of the loans back projects elsewhere in Florida and in Las Vegas, San Diego and Atlanta, among other spots.

``Starwood is coming in at a lower cost basis, so as they start to move units, they are going to dictate what the market is,'' said Peter Zalewski, a Condo Vultures principal and a leading local analyst. ``Related has more inventory, but they don't have the price control.''.......

Two southwestern Connecticut physicians want to help terminally ill patients to die, so they're asking Connecticut courts to decide on the meaning of "suicide" in state law.

The attempt to overturn a 40-year-old law could have national ramifications and make Connecticut a focus of debate on end-of-life issues that divide the public and the medical profession.

Dr. Gary Blick, a Norwalk physician specializing in infectious diseases, who filed the lawsuit with Dr. Ron Levine, of Greenwich, said during a news conference in the Capitol on Wednesday that the unconsciousness of "terminal sedation" is the only legal treatment for them to offer dying patients.....
