09/01/11 Election Frustration Mounts As Many Greenwich Politicians Seek To Place The Blame For Homeowners Who Are Still Without Power
"There are a bunch of things where you can say, `Why are we talking about these things now and not 18 months ago?' " Blankley, a Democrat, said Thursday.
The first selectman candidate was referring to the March 2010 nor'easter that ripped through Greenwich, shredding branches and knocking down trees.
"In between storms, there are a lot of things that should have been done," Blankley said.
Extensive tree pruning and more efficient management of emergency crews would have spared some of the town's suffering following Irene, Blankley said.
The town already has an at-risk-tree program in place, according to Tesei. That program has $293,000 allocated to it this year. The program is a precautionary measure on top of the parks gardeners and 10 full-time tree workers the town employs. Private trees, over which the town has no control, can also bring down power lines, Tesei said.
"The next several days, the focus is on restoration," he said. "It's unsatisfactory and unacceptable that the restoration should take this long. This has little to do with the town and more to do with CL&P.
"Most people have been more than patient. But it's beyond that now."

09/01/11 Greenwich First Selectman Candidate John Blankley Has Just Issued A Press Release About Greenwich's Response To Tropical Storm Irene
For Immediate Release Contact:
Austin Finan (917) 828-3494
BLANKLEY CALLS ON FIRST SELECTMAN TESEI TO ADDRESS STORM MANAGEMENT SHORTCOMINGS
First Selectman Candidate Promises to Improve Emergency Management Preparation and Planning
GREENWICH, CT September 1, 2011 – First Selectman candidate John Blankley today called on First Selectman Peter Tesei to take accountability for the lingering aftermath of Hurricane Irene that has left 4,000 homes without power, a number of roads impassable and school openings delayed by a week.
“Five days after Hurricane Irene hit the northeast, 4,000 Greenwich homes are still without power and a number of roads remain impassable. This is simply unacceptable and I believe Greenwich residents deserve better,” said Blankley. “This unsatisfactory state of affairs directly correlates to the inadequate pre-planning and lack of proactive leadership demonstrated by Mr. Tesei.”
“The Town of Greenwich and its hardworking emergency response workers would be better served if Mr. Tesei implemented real preventative measures, including extensive tree pruning and more efficient emergency crew coordination so that fallen power lines, trees and other debris can be removed in a timely manner. In addition, the town should also work with Connecticut Light & Power to explore the possible burial of power lines along key arterial routes to reduce the effects of power outages in future storms.”
“As First Selectman, I will take these necessary and proactive steps to ensure that Greenwich has a competent emergency and storm management plan in place the next time disaster strikes.”
