05/04/09 Greenwich Life: Environment - The Big House Id Dead
E/The Environmental Magazine
....Rogers grew up in a sprawling 10-room home in the upscale community of Greenwich, Connecticut, and was living in a 2300-square-foot home in New York when ...
....Rogers’ project could be completed this year, realizing a lifelong dream. “I’ve never been comfortable with a lot of empty unused space,’’ she says. “I’m just not comfortable having a dining room that is used once a year.”
If McMansions were the trademark of the overindulgent ’80s and ’90s, the not-so-big house may be the symbol of a generation that is slowing down, considering the earth’s resources and doing what it can to preserve them. Consider this: a 2008 survey by the National Association of Home Builders shows that more than 60% of potential homebuyers would rather have a smaller house with more amenities than the other way around. And homebuilders such as KB Home, Warmington Homes and John Laing Homes are shrinking floor plans and offering smaller, less costly houses according to published reports. In a Chicago Tribune story in December 2008, Tom Stephani, a longtime homebuilder and the president of the McHenry County Home Builders Association, declared the “big house is dead.’’ .....

Larger, Newspaper-Friendly Amazon Kindle to Debut This Week: Report
TMCnet
Steven R. Swartz, president of Hearst Newspapers and senior vice president of Hearst Corporation, recently referred to Amazon’s e-book tablet, the Kindle, when addressing workers at a pair of struggling Connecticut dailies that his company owns and operates – the Greenwich Time and The Advocate of Stamford.
In a group e-mail that was sent to employees Feb. 26 and obtained by TMCnet, Swartz said the papers must begin charging for access to online content in some way, and that it may look to Amazon’s new version of an e-book tablet – the Kindle 2 – to do that.
“We believe we must begin to provide greater differentiation between the content of our free Web sites and the content of our paid product, be that paid product read in print, on a digital device like Amazon’s Kindle, or online,” Swartz said.
This week, we learn from Brad Stone of the New York Times, reports are emerging that Amazon is in fact developing a larger version of its device – such as those made by Plastic Logic (pictured below) – that could help revitalize the struggling newspaper industry.
Citing unnamed sources that he says are familiar with the situation, Stone says that as early as this week, Amazon will introduce a larger version of the kindle that’s tailored for newspaper, magazine and even textbook displays.

An Inside Look At How The Associated Press Followed Up
And Alerted The Greenwich Time About The Story:
Here Is The Latest Version Of The Associated Press Story......
The recession Nation struggles through one day
Casa Grande Valley Newspapers - 16 minutes ago
And in Greenwich, Conn., home to hedge fund billionaires, it's David Rabin, who lost his $100,000 job last October as a senior vice president for a small financial services firm. He spends part of his morning in his basement, job hunting.
In better times, Rabin would be preparing for his annual spring golfing trip with three buddies at his condo in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Instead, the 48-year-old Rabin, wearing jeans, a blue hockey sweat shirt and white sneakers, is poring over Monster.com and other online job boards. He sends out 10 resumes a day, but has had few nibbles in six months.
A day earlier, he learned he didn't get a job recruiting members for a gym. That hurt.
"I didn't sleep a freakin' wink," he says. "If I don't fit that job, what the hell am I going to do?"
Rabin's wife, Lauren, has a marketing job. And he receives $476 weekly unemployment - about a quarter of his former salary - that runs out in July. Both checks keep them afloat.
Rabin copes by keeping busy. He and Lauren compile a daily list of chores. Each time he completes one, he checks off a box.
Today's list: Drive his 19-year-old son to school. Search online for cheaper auto and home insurance. (No luck there.) Look for work; his target area has expanded to Buffalo, N.Y., Ohio and Florida - any city where he has friends or relatives. Walk the dog. Buy flip flops for his Florida-bound wife. Work out at the YMCA. Paint the basement.
"You have no idea how humbling all this is," he says. "It's extremely humbling. I'm ready to go to Stop & Shop and start bagging groceries."
"I've been in this situation before and I wasn't nearly as frightened," he says. "This is the Great Recession we're in." ...
Let's Hope That All Of This Publicity Helps Mr. Rabin Get Back To Work.

05/04/09 Fairfield County Connecticut Celebrates Obama’s “First 100 Days”
(l-r) co-chairs Lynn Sullivan, Jean D. William and Sheila Foster
About 210 Supporters of President Barack Obama's gathered at the Saltwater Grille in Stamford, Connecticut, to celebrate the president's "First 100 Days," in office as the 44th U.S. president.
The event, which was presented by The Greenwich Democrat PAC and Friends and co-chaired by Lynn Sullivan, Sheila Foster and Jean D.William, brought out political dignitaries from Fairfield County such as, newly elected Congressman Jim Himes, Attorney General Dick Blumenthal and former U.S. Senatorial candidate Ned Lamont.
(l-r) Laura Grad, Sheila Foster, Ned Lamant, Adam Frankel, Stacey Tisdale, Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy and Peter Campbell
The event started with a welcome speech from Greenwich Selectwoman Lin Lavery, which was followed by speeches made by Dave Roberson; Greenwich Democrat Town Committee Chair & Frank Farricker; DTC Officer, Lynn Sullivan; event co-chair, Ned Lamant, Congressman, Jim Himes and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
In response to First Lady Michelle Obama's call to community service, there was a volunteer fair, where guests had an opportunity to meet with representatives from local non-profit agencies.
Ms. Sullivan told reporters "President Obama's promise to offer 'transparency in government' allows us an opportunity to truly understand Washington's priorities—health care, education and sustainable energy."
"With so many serious issues facing our country, we need to take the time to celebrate the progress the administration is making so far," she continued.
As the guests nibbled on hors d'oeuvres and the Terry Hess Band played calypso and jazz music in the background, Ms. Foster said, "President Obama is facing some of the toughest challenges any administration has ever seen and although we worked hard to get him into office, the real hard work is just beginning."
The event raised over $10,000

For the exception of one paper, that THANKFULLY followed the story from it's origins, in the aftermath of the FEC's decision on Lieberman's 387,000 slush fund, the press' silence on the darkest chapter in Lieberman's 2006 primary campaign speaks volumes about the state of hard-news journalism in Connecticut.
Today's article in The New Haven Register outlines the scandal that the rest of the media is ignoring......
....During the time in which Lieberman was dishing out money on the streets, paid-off goons so-called volunteers started disrupting various Lamont events...and at times getting physical.
For instance, remember the horrifying incident at Ted's where Lieberman's paid mercenaries went wild .....

....Till this day, we still have no accountability when it comes to how Lieberman used all of his slush fund...387,000 used up in just 12 DAYS. That breaks down to 32,000 per day WITH NO ACCOUNTABILITY and almost three years later we still have no answers...and the so-called media in our state is still silent.

Police shouldn't be bad-mouthed over addresses
This initiative did not start in the Police Department. Whereas it makes reasonable sense from the Police Department's view that sequential street numbers would be easier to locate than nonsequential numbers, I don't believe the police were the driving force behind it.
Furthermore, in response to Mr Boutelle's concern about personnel not knowing their way around Cos Cob, he must realize that we have civilian dispatchers now. Many of them probably never set foot in Cos Cob, and they send our officers based on citizen calls.......
