Modern Midas: Leading design blogger turns flea-market into treasure
New York Daily News
At age 15, designer Eddie Ross committed to a life of surrounding himself with pretty things.

Now with a Web site tag line reading, “It doesn’t have to be expensive to be beautiful,” the fourth-place finisher in Bravo’s “Top Design” show has turned his interests into a career, transforming flawed flea market finds into high-end decorative objects. In the past year, the former senior style editor at Martha Stewart Living has created a popular blog that may lead to international television shows and books.

Using an out-of-the-box approach to treasure-hunt and reinvent products from the near and distant past, Ross digs through flea market piles to turn butter knives into letter openers, shell-shaped plates into ashtrays and fabrics from preppie sundresses and summer gowns into cocktail napkins.

Not bad for a kid from Greenwich, Conn., whose father was an electrician, his mother a nurse, and grandfather a horticulturalist working the grounds of the town’s estates.

We were middle class, and in Greenwich that meant poor,” says Ross, who just moved from New York City to a 1760 upstate farmhouse, where he and partner Jaithan Kochar run their constantly updated Web site. “My friends were always coming back from exotic places, and I hadn’t even been on an airplane. I wanted to have beautiful things around me, too.”

Family time for Ross meant rewiring chandeliers and planting chrysanthemums. His first job in high school was with a local caterer who planned events and parties in Greenwich, where the average price of a one-family home was $1.7 million in 2006.

“Catering was like antique school for me,” says Ross. “I educated myself by looking through the silver, dishes and linens while I set the tables. I researched every brand I saw to make sure I would recognize it if I saw it at a flea market.”

A total do-it-yourselfer, Ross set his sights on working for Martha Stewart. After a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, he became a food stylist for Stewart’s show on the Food Network before becoming a senior style editor with her magazine group.

“I knew if I could get my foot in the door with Martha Stewart Living, I could go from there,” he says. “She didn’t let anyone stand in her way, and she could really do it all.

Not to knock Ralph Lauren, who does lifestyle well, but he can’t plant tulips or rewire a light socket. Martha can, and I can, too. Ask me to knit you a scarf. I can. Ask me to plan your kitchen or plant you a garden. I can do that, too.”

More blunt than conceited, Ross parlayed his success on Bravo’s “Top Design” to his Web business. Finishing fourth after making it to the final episode, he became a fan favorite.

“People come up to me all the time to say I was robbed,” says Ross. “Seriously, though, like a Martha Stewart editor was going to win a design contest thrown by Elle Decor? It motivates me to keep getting better.”......

Could Balducci’s be underperforming in a town that loves upscale groceries?
Balducci’s managers are shuttering both Balducci’s stores in Manhattan — one in Chelsea and the other on the Upper West Side — on April 26. In addition, Balducci’s announced the closing of two other stores, in Ridgefield, Conn., and Washington, D.C.

The management called those four stores “underperforming.” (Five other Balducci’s stores, which are evidently “performing,” will continue to operate in Virginia, Maryland, and Scarsdale, N.Y.)

The Greenwich store, which was formerly a Hay Day Market is supposedly "preforming" according to Balducci’s managers, but Greenwich business and real estate insiders tell Greenwich Roundup that might not be true.

However, when Greenwich Roundup visited the store to today it appeared to be somewhat busy.

04/16/09 Mattress King Laid To Rest

Former Seaman's Furniture partner Carl Seaman dies

Furniture Today

GREENWICH, Conn. Carl Seaman, brother and one-time partner in former retailer Seaman's Furniture with Morty Seaman, died of pneumonia on April 11. He was 73.

Seaman's was founded in Brooklyn in 1932 by Carl and Morty's father, Julius, with a $500 loan from his mother-in-law. When Julius died in 1954, Morty came on board and was followed three years later by Carl as an equal partner.

The two built the chain into a multimillion-dollar business and brought in their sons (Morty's son Jeff Seaman, now CEO of retailer Rooms To Go, and Carl's son Jordan Seaman) as merchandiser and marketer, respectively. Seaman's went public in 1985 and was sold in 1987 to private equity firm Kohlberg, Kravitz & Roberts. The chain ultimately merged with Levitz and was closed in 2005.

"He was meticulous, a numbers man," Morty Seaman said of his brother. He said Carl also was a "sports nut. Whether it was the New York Giants or the Knicks or the Mets, that was his love in life in addition to his family."

Carl Seaman left the business in 1987 and began working in non-furniture businesses ETI Financial Corp. and Seminole Casualty Insurance.

He also became heavily involved in charitable work, primarily causes associated with familial dysautonomia, a rare genetic disease that affects the autonomic and nervous systems of children from birth and includes symptoms such as reduced sensitivity to pain and temperature and the inability to produce tears.

Seaman's gifts helped advance research of the disease and fund a faculty post at New York University, eventually named the Carl Seaman Family Professorship.

By 1993 a test was developed to determine early in a pregnancy whether the disease was present, Jordan Seaman said. By 2001, new tests could help couples wanting a baby to determine whether they were carriers. And now, researchers are getting close to genetic treatment of the disease.

Carl Seaman is survived by his wife Linda Seaman, daughter Dana Manning, son Jordan and four grandchildren.

04/16/09 READER SUBMITTED COMMENTS: Please keep up the good works

My Dear.

I want to take this opportunity to commend you on the work that you all have done and continue to do, being the voice for those of us who are voiceless.

From the time I first received a link to the Round Up, I have appreciated the knowledge and understanding you all offer. I especially like the way you cover individual cases and the activities of groups/organizations, families and friends. I’ve found courage, inspiration and hope on the website. And just saying "thank you" does not adequately convey my gratitude.

Once again, I would like to reiterate my appreciation for the hard work you all are doing on behalf of those of us ignored in town. Keep the good works in effect, because you all are definitely making a difference.

Thanks and good luck in all your endeavour's.

Yours Affectionately,
Mrs. Emily Jackman

Greenwich Police Watch was an MSN Group that was forced to close when Microsoft ended the old MSN Groups service last February.

MSN sold and transfered the group to the social networking site known as multiply. The transfere did not go well and many posts were lost.

Currently the management of Greenwich Police Watch is reconstructing the archive one sourse at a time and hope to have the site 100% back by the end of the month.

Greenwich Roundup will add Greenwich Police Watch to the Raw Greenwich Blog And RSS Feed.

04/14/09 Greenwich Roundup May Or May Not Be Down For A Day Or So.

There is a scheduled outage of the blogger service at 2:00AM PDT on Thursday (4/16).

Every time this happens Greenwich Roundup end up getting a Java Script error a day before the "scheduled outage" takes place, so if the error occurs once again all post will be saved and put up after the "scheduled outage".

Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause you.

Please don't send the usual flood of emails that instruct Greenwich Roundup to dump Blogger and move to the sexy Word Press Blogging Service.

Greenwich Roundup came to the dance with Blogger and Greenwich Roundup is going home with Blogger.

Blogger might not be as pretty as Word Press, but Blogger is Greenwich Roundup's first love.

Blogger has been very good to Greenwich Roundup.
