There is blame a-plenty to go around in the giant shell game that has caused our nation's finances to collapse. A lot of it very close to home in fact -- starting with American International Group's Financial Products Division, based in Wilton, a source of the credit default swaps that not only helped create the problem, but spread it so far and wide that the crisis became systemic.
.....That said, people in Congress need to cut it with the scapegoating and get busy solving the deep, deep problems with our financial system. Yes, it makes good TV, but the bonuses are a tiny part of the issue. Congress was, at best, asleep as AIG and its cohorts were up to their tricks. At worst, it was a knowing abettor. Then Washington forked over huge amounts of cash with no say over how it all would be spent......
.....The problems with our economy go so far beyond shameful bonuses that every moment that legislators spend grandstanding for the cameras is really just another slap in the faces of the many millions who have already lost so much.......

Service fair gives people hope and help

Until recently, Rebecca had the classic upper-middle-class Greenwich life -- a six-figure job in mergers and acquisitions, living with her teenage son in the Pemberwick section of town.

But, since getting laid off last September, the 43-year-old has temporarily moved in with her parents as a bank forecloses on her home.

Rebecca, who declined to give her last name to protect her son's privacy, was the kind of person the Greenwich Department of Social Services was hoping would come to an event it organized Friday.....

....Joe Barrios has been out of work for four months after 16 years doing home remodeling work. Two weeks ago, he went to the emergency room because he thought he was having a stroke.

"My heart is fine, but I didn't like the bill -- almost $6,000 for just five hours," said Barrios, 44. At Friday's event, Barrios, a town resident, spoke to someone from Greenwich Hospital and learned about the patient financial services department....

... Cyndie Martin, a 49-year-old Cos Cob resident, said that although she goes to the Greenwich Library almost every day, she didn't know about the classes and events there to help job-seekers. Martin was recently laid off from a large irrigation company, where she had worked in the accounts payable department.

"It gives you hope," said Martin, who had collected a shopping bag full of information during the event. "I will be walking out of here feeling empowered, and like there's a little team behind me.".....

Town asks court to deny Honulik appeal
Town attorneys have fired back at police Lt. Gary Honulik's request for the state Supreme Court to reconsider its February ruling against him in a promotion lawsuit.

In a recently filed motion with the court, the town claims Honulik's attorney Kathryn Emmett was wrong to suggest that one of the justices, who was past the mandatory retirement age of 70, should not have been allowed to rule on the case. The case stems from a lawsuit over whether Honulik was unjustly passed over for a promotion to captain in 2003.

Emmett called Justice Barry Schaller's participation "unconstitutional." ....

Irritating Greenwich Time Story #2
Proposal seeks to curb DUI on sea and land
Many Greenwich boaters are backing a new legislative proposal aiming to punish drunken offenders on both land and sea, regardless of where the violation occurs.

The bill would mean that motorists charged with driving while under the influence could not only lose their driving license, but their safe boating certificate as well, which is required to operate a boat. Boaters caught drinking while operating a vessel also would be at risk of losing their driver's license, according to the proposal.

"This would provide a greater deterrent for people and would be a definite step in a positive direction," said John Craine, chairman of the First Selectman's Coastal Resources Advisory Committee.......,
Comment:

Once Again Rookie Reporter Debra Friedman Has Regurgitated A Town Press Release And Only Has Quote From Town Employees....

.....Sgt. John Brown, head of the Greenwich Police's Marine Division agreed

"I think this is a great proposal," said Brown. "We encourage the public not to partake in drinking alcoholic beverages while operating a boat, but we do realize that it is part of the recreational activity."

Police said they have made very few drunken-operating arrests on boats in the last five years but are always on the lookout and felt this law would make boaters take the issue more seriously. The division patrols the coastline year round, working 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the summer.....

For The Record:

Greenwich Roundup Agrees With Both Sgt. John Brown And John Craine And Supports This New Law.

Officials ask people to stay out of bat caves
ALBANY, N.Y.
By Michael Hill -- Associated Press-- Citing an "unprecedented" crisis of bats dying off from West Virginia to New England, federal officials on Thursday asked for people to stay out of thousands of caves in states struck by "white-nose syndrome.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the request to guard against the possibility that people are unwittingly spreading the mysterious affliction when they explore multiple caves. There is no evidence that white nose is a threat to people.

Named for the sugary smudges of fungus on the noses and wings of hibernating bats, white-nose bats appear to run through their winter fat stores before spring. It was confirmed in eight states this winter from New Hampshire to West Virginia and there is evidence it may have spread to Virginia, according to wildlife service spokeswoman Diana Weaver....

03/28/09 Dueling legal complaints filed on the same day in different New York courts present strikingly contradictory portrayals of Joan Banach.....

Robert Motherwell and the curator Joan Banach in 1984.

A Tug of War Over Robert Motherwell

New York Times

According to a lawsuit filed on Wednesday by Ms. Banach in State Supreme Court in Manhattan against the Dedalus Foundation — formerly known as the Motherwell Foundation — she was fired from the organization, where she was a board member and held various positions, because of authentication disputes about the artist’s work.

But according to a lawsuit the foundation filed on Wednesday in Federal District Court for the Southern District against Ms. Banach, she abused her access to Motherwell’s studio, stealing his work, some of which she sold for her own benefit in a breach of fiduciary duty.....

Motherwell, who died in 1991 at 76, explored literary and philosophical concerns through work that ranged from brooding abstract paintings to elegantly playful collages. His long and prolific career earned him a permanent Motherwell Gallery at the Bavarian State Museum of Modern Art in Munich, established in 1982, and the National Medal of Arts at the White House, awarded in 1989.

Ms. Banach was hired by Motherwell in 1981 “to care for, consign and otherwise manage his artwork,” her lawsuit says. Over the next decade she worked closely with him at his studio in Greenwich, Conn., .....

....In addition, the foundation accuses Ms. Banach of taking Motherwell’s work, including his Metropolitan Museum of Art sketchbook, home without authorization.

“She was observed surreptitiously returning these materials to Dedalus,” the foundation says in its suit.

The complaint adds that Ms. Banach, despite her role in cataloging the artworks, was “caught secretly trying to sell undocumented, unrecorded Motherwell works that have no studio inventory numbers and for which Dedalus has no records.”.....

Oh, Look Here Is Failed Hearst Newspaper Managing Editor Bruce Hunter Hastily Throwing Up Connecticut Post Reporter Ken Dixon's News Report Up On The Greenwich Time In An Effort To Cover A News Story That Greenwich Roundup Broke Over A Week Ago ......

AG wants no more AIG bonuses - Greenwich Time

$230M in payouts planned

Ken Dixon
Connecticut Post.

HARTFORD -- State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said Friday that he will try to stop an estimated $230 million in additional bonuses scheduled for American International Group employees.

And the co-chairmen of the legislative committee looking into the bonuses said they were ready for their next phase of researching the legality of the hefty payouts.

In an interview, Blumenthal said he will ask Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to prevent the bonuses scheduled for March 2010. Blumenthal said he believes that state law does not protect bonuses the way it shelters regular wages under employment contracts.....

Greenwich Roundup Hates To Say
We Told You So, But Damn It ....

We Told You So

"We're writing today to the Fed that in light of the disclosure yesterday that another $230 million will be paid in March of next year to the employees there this year," Blumenthal said.

The Disclosure Yesterday????

Is Greenwich Resident Richard Blumenthal On Drugs ????

Blumenthal's Office Has Known About This For Over A Weak, Because Google Analytics Says His Server Has Logged On To Many Greenwich Roundup Pages That Have Reported This Second Payment All Most Every Day For A Week.

"We are urging the Fed take prompt and aggressive action to protect taxpayer money going to bonuses that seem excessive and unnecessary."

Blumenthal made his remarks after Thursday's hearing before the legislative Banks Committee, in which AIG officials defended the recent $218 million in bonuses paid to executives. The bonuses were funded from the $180 billion taxpayer-funded bailout of the company, which nearly failed under the weight of toxic financial instruments.

"There is a difference between wages and bonuses under our statutes," Blumenthal said. "This compensation seems to have no link to any specific or measurable services or tasks, but rather is at the discretion or latitude of the corporation and should be regarded as a bonus, not a wage, under our statutes."
During a four-hour hearing Thursday, a lawyer for AIG said Connecticut law requires the bonuses or the company could be liable for double the bonus amount, plus legal fees, for each of more than 400 employees.

CT Sen. Bob Duff, D-Norwalk Is Just As Phony As Blumenthal.
Before, AIG Ever Turned Over One Page Of The Retention Contract Over To The State Of Conneticut, Google Analytics Says Bob Duff's Office Was On The Very Pages Greenwich Roundup That Reported The Second Payments.

In a joint statement Friday, Duff and state Rep. Ryan Barry, D-Manchester, co-chairmen of the committee, said the total amount of bonuses over the last two years was about $220 million more than the $232 million widely reported; and there may be additional bonus payments in 2010.

In a joint statement Friday, Duff and state Rep. Ryan Barry, D-Manchester, co-chairmen of the committee, said the total amount of bonuses over the last two years was about $220 million more than the $232 million widely reported; and there may be additional bonus payments in 2010.

"Though that number could be reduced by resignations, it is a significant difference," Duff and Barry said. "In fact, documentation provided indicates that executives put on a personal life vest in the first quarter of 2008 when they knew the ship was starting to sink.

Second, the committee learned that payouts also go to involuntarily terminated employees, or employees who resign with reason, despite the fact that they fall outside the Connecticut Wage Act because those payments appear to be similar to severance payments," the lawmakers said.

They said that documents obtained under subpoena indicate that past employee-retention plans did not have guaranteed payouts.
