08//29/11 Despite Full Battery Power And a Backup Generator At Home Many Greenwich Residents Can't Get A Signal On Their Cell Phones

Countless Greenwich smart phone users have learned the hard way that the multitasking devices are only as good as the cell towers they rely on for a signal, many of which got cut off from the power grid in the storm.

Also, traditional "land line" phone service through through cablevision and FIOS also went down in wide parts of Greenwich.

Many Greenwich officials complained about connectivity problems after the storm.

T-Mobile employees were on the ground in the Greenwich working to restore the full local network.

Field technicians were focusing their efforts on connecting portable generators to cell towers without permanent generators or alternate power sources.

Power outages are behind customers' problems. There were about 200 cell towers out of commission after the storm, largely because they lost power.

About 1,000 generators have been trucked into Connecticut by ATT&T to restore cell towers.

AT&T is is also bringing in crews from Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio to help with restoration.

T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless announced that their customers can use their stores in Greenwich to place calls.

During the storm, Greenwich lost all Verizon connectivity.

So far, there have not been any cell towers or antennas that sustained any damage from the storm in Greenwich.

Greenwich Roundup is on the Sprint / Nextel network and did not experience any problems what-so-ever durring or after the storm.

08/29/11 Afternoon Update On The Aftermath Of Irene

Connecticut Light & Power and Greenwich DPW road crews today are trying to reopen the town’s main north-south and east-west routes that are blocked by downed trees and wires.

So far about 5o of the approximately 120 blocked roads have been reopened.

Main north-south streets, such as Round Hill and Riversville roads Lake Avenue and King Street, are still blocked.

There are also a few CL&P crews are working to restore power in town.

If everything goes well, will take several days for all the power is fully restored.

Hurricane Irene did not caused as much damage as the March 2010 nor’easter.

However, town officials say Irene was worse than the nor’easter, because with coastal and overland flooding caused so much damage.

The damage in Greenwich is much less than in other parts of the state.

Currently, 11,800 CL&P customers are in the dark in Greenwich.

Over and over, CL&P has pointed out that Greenwich is better off than the 33 small municipalities in the state of Connecticut that are totally without power.

CL&P has brought in crews from other states to help in the recovery effort, and they are staying at the Hyatt Regency in Old Greenwich.

There are about about 75 workers – based at the Hyatt, but they are also working in other cities and towns, such as New Milford and Newtown.

There are about 20 crews on the streets of Greenwich during the day. The majority of these crews are paired with Greenwich DPW crews that are clearing roads in town. These crews are working in 16 Hour shifts.

08/29/11 The Greenwich Metro North Train Station Will Be Up And Running This Afternoon

THE MTA IS COMING BACK TO LIFE

A Metro North Spokesperson has said that the Greenwich Train Station will on a limited schedule this by late afternoon.

With in 24 hours there should be full local service up to the Stamford train station, thus putting the Cos Cob and Old Greenwich train stations on a local schedule.

UPDATE:

1:00 PM

If things go as planed the 3:54 p.m. train from New Haven to Grand Central Terminal will be the first train to run since trains were shut down during Tropical Storm Irene.

The first outbound train from Grand Central will be the 4:37 p.m. train to New Haven, which also stops in Stamford.

Trees continued to fall all along the 70-mile line into, further extending efforts to clear the right of way and deal with signal problems, this could effect the above mentioned times.

As of 12 PM today, Metro-North was running regular service on the Harlem line between North White Plains and Grand Central Terminal, though several more northern stops of that railway line remain submerged by flood waters.

08/29/11 Greenwich Emergency Management Officials Are Questioning A Decision By CL&P Not To Deploy Crews After Hurricane Irene Left The Town

WHAT'S WITH THE BIG FAT DELAY ?????

Utility officials have repeatedly said the winds were initially too high to safely send out workers to restore power.

CL&P did not begin any work until 1 p.m., due to company and OSHA policies that do not allow workers on the job in winds above 35 miles per hour.

Greenwich officials argued that the winds had died down in Greenwich, but CL&P managers were looking at conditions all around the state

Greenwich tree and DPW crews were ready to go, but the CL&P crews could not get authorization to go to work in Greenwich.

More than 12,500 of CL&P’s Greenwich customers, or close to 50 percent of Greenwich is currently without power.

08/29/11 Church Homecoming - All Of The Public Welcome

Second Congregational Church is inviting the community to take part in a family-friendly homecoming weekend Sept. 10-11. Events are free and will be held at the church, at 139 E. Putnam Ave. in Greenwich.

The homecoming theme will be “The Living Stones,” inspired by Peter’s first letter to early Christians, in which he calls them to holy living and urges them to “love one another deeply from the heart.”

On Saturday, Sept. 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, the church will offer, for younger children, a program of crafts and engaging activities centered on a geological theme.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, during the 10:30 a.m. worship service, the Rev. Holly Adams, transitional senior minister, will deliver the homecoming sermon on the “living stones” theme and include a remembrance of the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11.

A barbecue luncheon, complete with an ice cream truck, will follow at 11:30 a.m. A “Building for the Ages” event also will be held.

Reservations for the Saturday event and the Sunday luncheon are strongly encouraged.

For reservations and further information, please contact Gloria LaDestro, church office manager, at 203-869-9311, ext. 120 or gloria@2cc.org.
