11/03/08 Letter To The Greenwich Citizen Editor

Mullen Extraordinary In Multiple Ways

To the Editor:

Congratulations to Tony Mullen, Greenwich Public School teacher extraordinaire.

In April, Tony was honored as one of the six 2008 Distinguished Teachers in Greenwich. From these six Distinguished Teachers, he was then chosen to represent Greenwich in the Connecticut Teacher of the Year competition. Among contestants from 166 school districts across Connecticut, Tony has now been named one of the four finalists! This is a true testament to the commitment, passion and effectiveness he brings to the job.

All of the awards and honors aside, the best part about Tony Mullen and his teaching skills is that, on a daily basis, he is improving the educational skill set of our town's children.

Thank you, Tony. Best of luck.

11/03/08 One The Eve Of An Election Greenwich Time Editors And Reporters Take The Day Off And Put Up Stamford Advocate News Stories

Billi Kid's sticker graffiti illustration of Sarah Palin is seen last week on the wall of the former Yale & Towne lock factory on Henry Street in Stamford.

Palin likeness appears on wall
STAMFORD - A tongue-in-cheek illustration of Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has popped up in, of all places, the South End.

It is a rare sighting of sticker graffiti, a form of street art that uses adhesive paper to print images or messages.

In Stamford, the drawing was stuck on the brick facade of the old Yale & Towne factory on Henry Street. It depicts Palin in a blue bikini and heels, muscled and grinning, saying, "Take That Billi Kid!"

Billi Kid is the artist's pseudonym. Last month, Blog Stamford linked to the Palin caricature and other samples of Billi Kid's work that have appeared in public spaces around the world. He also was featured in galleries and street art exhibits....

Elizabeth Migliore, 41, of 28 Sherman Ave., was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and threatening following vandalism of a motor vehicle on Sherman Avenue on Thursday night, police said.

The car's owner told police that he believed one of his tenants had scratched the right side of his car, police said. Police questioned Migliore, who denied vandalizing the car and yelled a threat to the car's owner, according to the report.

Migliore was placed under arrest and taken to police headquarters, police said. She was released on a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Nov. 14.

Big turnout expected Tuesday
NORWALK
-Will Greenwich get swept up by the prevailing political winds of change or will it buck the trend and deliver for Republicans as it has so many times in the past?

The Rev. Lindsay Curtis, president of the Norwalk branch of the NAACP, said voters have enough time during regular polling hours, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"I do think that there is some responsibility on the voter to be at the polls by 8 p.m.," Curtis said.

His said his concern is for voters who may be stuck in line outside a polling station.

"If they are in the lineup at 7:59:59, they should be allowed to vote, even if they only get to vote at 10 p.m.," Curtis said.

....Art Scialabba, chairman of Norwalk's Republican Town Committee, said he expects the system to run smoothly Tuesday, in part because there aren't as many people to vote for as there were in the 2007 municipal election.

"Last election, it was a much larger ballot. We were voting for mayor and school board; it was two pages long," Scialabba said. "Tuesday, you have to choose five names and answer two questions. It will only take a second to insert (the ballot) and then you are out the door."

Gail Wall, chairwoman of Norwalk's Democratic Town Committee, said Bysiewicz has been preparing for a large turnout.

"She has been working very hard for the last few months to make sure everything will work well," Wall said.

Former critics now praise state voter system
Karen Lyons has not been the biggest booster of Connecticut's new centralized voter system, a database accessible to registrars statewide to help them prevent voter fraud.

Lyons, Norwalk's Republican registrar of voters, and her Democratic counterpart defied a requirement a few years ago to participate in the system, saying it was unreliable.

But the kinks have been worked out, Lyons said.

"They're smokin' now," she said.

It's the kind of response Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz, a Democrat, wants to hear.
Bysiewicz's office and the state Information Technology Department have been working for the past few months to upgrade the system.

Society hosts mineralogical show at Civic Center

Marley Cadigan, 10 and his brother Isaac Cadigan, 7, often spend hours digging for items like gold or crystal in their backyard.

Collecting pieces, whether it is from their backyard, outdoors, or at stores, has become a hobby that both have cultivated.

So attending the Stamford Mineralogical Society gems and minerals show ......

.....Hundreds of people came out for the two day event.

"It's a perfect time of year, right before the holidays to pick up some gifts," said Rye, N.Y. resident Kim Pollard, 29.

Steve Haire of Terrestrial Treasures, based out of Grand Junction, CO, uses a miniature jack hammer and miniature sand blaster to create his fossil sculptures, which ranged in price from $125 to $600. He had turtles and a pipefish as well as an ancient keichousaura lizard from China.
There were also several booths dedicated to jewelry, including necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets made from jade and turquoise to peridot and crystal.

Terry Burtzlaff, of the New York based, Museum Style Bases, was selling rare pieces of minerals from all over the world, including a piece of blue azurite from Arizona, costing $125 and another piece that was crystallized, from Namibia which cost $450......

11/03/08 Democrats see chance to widen majority in state legislature

By The Associated Press

HARTFORD — Democratic House Speaker James Amann thinks the minority Republicans in the Connecticut legislature have a lot to worry about on Election Day.

"The tsunami is coming, they know it," he said. "It's going to be the biggest landslide since Watergate."Democrats already hold a veto-proof majority in the House of Representatives.

Given the popularity of presidential candidate Barack Obama in Connecticut and voter displeasure with the Bush administration, some hope to secure the same level of supremacy in the state Senat

... of the state Democrats, said he thinks Democrats can pick up more seats, even in Republican strongholds such as Greenwich. "Democrats are running some pretty strong races," he said. Republicans are trying to convince voters that such Democratic ...

...."For more than 30 years Democrats have controlled the Connecticut state House. Thirty years of a Democratic majority has gotten us higher taxes, jobs lost and a growing state deficit," reads the announcer.

"After 30 years, don't you think it's about time to change the state House?"Beth Rotman, executive director of Connecticut's Citizens Election Fund, said whether or not incumbents lose on Tuesday will not determine whether the new public campaign financing initiative is a success.

"Overall, we're going to judge success by whether we're able to make things more competitive and whether the program really incentivizes participation," she said.

Two public hearings have been scheduled for Nov. 19 and Dec. 3 to get feedback from the public and candidates on the first year of the public financing initiative.

"I think the point for the program is to make sure candidates have the opportunity to run clean, without being beholden to special interests," Rotman added, "and that candidates that want to run, who don't have access to large donors, are still able to run."

Getting Tired Of Joe Pisani's Groupies At Our Greenwich

Simple Question. Why is Mr. Greenwich, Joe Pisani, always in Greenwich? He lives in Orange and works in NY. Why do the people in Greenwich and Stamford give a rats ass about this guy? And by people, I mean a bunch of worthless women writers who are trying to create absolutely nothing from absolutely nothing.

Don't insult my intelligence. Joe Pisani is far from Mr. Anything. He has a FEMALE FAN CLUB, the majority of which doesn't represent the town of Greenwich or those of us who live here.

These women: Joy, Suzy, Kristen, and the likes, are "JOE GROUPIES" The question is why??? Can't they come up with real news...news beyond Pisani parties and the gorgeousness of his family? Are their lives so incomplete? Or is it that they can't let go of sophomoric fantasies? Do they wear " What Would Joe Do?" bracelets too?

Greenwich is Greenwich. Orange is by New Haven. New York is New York. Mr Pisani has overstayed his welcome and should be encouraged to move on. Ladies, it is time to let go. Want me to walk you through it, sweethearts......?

Newspapers follow the news. REAL NEWS. They do not obsessively follow the dishonest dumber than dumb life of one former journalist, Joe Pisani. Get a grip, ladies. The day I want to read about ONE MAN, everyday, is the day I take my own life.

ENOUGH!!!!!!!

20 Year Old Mystery Driver Who Killed Joey Is Getting Special Treatment

Mr. Editor,

I'm still waiting for the Greenwich Police to release ANYTHING on the death of Joey. I don't know his family personally, but I feel sympathetic to their need to know ANY additional facts. Closure is important.

Last month, my college news paper, "The Fairfield Mirror" wrote an article on underage drinking. There were numerous car accidents in the off-campus housing area known as the "beach". Many accidents resulted in injuries requiring medical attention. This is nothing new, but the student editor specifically PRINTS NAMES. The effect? Student accountability.

The most recent was a car-pedestrian accident. The name of the drunk driver was released immediately, as was the pedestrian's. The sophomore, who was hit by the car, transferred to Fairfield this year from UNC, to play on our ,men's soccer team. He is from England. His season was cut short because some loser decided to drive drunk. He was very close to having his 19 year old LIFE CUT SHORT. His injuries were potentially life-threatening, and not just a few minor cuts and bruises. His were neck, back, and broken bones. He condition was listed as STABLE.

There is no toxology report that takes more than 24 hours. Either the driver in Greenwich refused a breathalyzer, or not administered.. If the driver was not taken to the hospital, no blood work was done. And if the driver was taken to the hospital, that STILL DOES NOT GUARENTEE ANY TOX_SCREEN WAS DONE. Often, a court order is necessary and it is the DA's responsibility to make a call to a judge who will grant one in the middle of the night. Very few judges would deny a court order involving a death.

Local police fall short in their ability to protect innocent victims. By holding info, they contribute to the inherent negligence. In Greenwich, the name of the driver should be known to all by now. It doesn't take detective work to see the driver was either: COMPLETEY WASTED, ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL, TRYING TO LEAVE THE SCENE, OR SOME VIP in the eyes of Greenwich Police.

So, for the welfare of a grieving family, and the countless others who have suffered similar consequences, tell Greenwich Police- THIS IS A PUBLIC DOCUMENT, and should be on file PUBLICALLY. There is no "confidentiality laws" in the state of CT with the exception of premeditated murder and minors.
