04/24/09 PAPER CUTS: More Newspaper Job Cuts !!!!!

25 percent of the overall cuts will hit the newsroom

Hearst eliminates 44 Connecticut newspaper jobs
Norwalk Advocate

Hearst Corp. cut 44 jobs at its Connecticut newspapers on Friday and plans to eliminate another 80 positions within three months as part of a consolidation and cost-cutting effort.

The affected employees met with management throughout the day. The rest of the workforce at Hearst’s four daily newspapers, the Connecticut Post, The Advocate of Stamford, Greenwich Time, The News-Times of Danbury and the six weeklies of the Brooks Community Newspaper group, was told of the plan in an e-mailed letter.

“Beginning today, we will take the first step toward structurally changing the cost base of our business to ensure its long-term viability,” Mark E. Aldam, senior vice president and group publisher of Hearst Newspapers, said in the letter.

Aldam cited the need to cut 20 percent of the Connecticut group’s costs as it deals with the fallout from the recession.

In a phone interview, Aldam declined to discuss the fiscal implications in dollars. Hearst is a privately held company......
....“We’re going to continue to publish all four dailies and seven weeklies,” he said. “Collaborate where we can.”

There is no plan to close offices or reduce publication schedules or home delivery. But Aldam said the company will be smarter about how it delivers to customers.

04/27/09 Director who wrote to Ebert as boy now gets praise

Photo: David Schwimmer and Kate Beckinsale star in 'Nothing But the Truth,'

Growing up in Greenwich, Conn., Rod Lurie was obsessed with films.

He'd ride to the library every Saturday, before the doors opened, and spend the day reading film criticism.

As a boy he wrote to nearly every major critic. Only three responded: Pauline Kael, Judith Crist and Roger Ebert.

He was so nice," Lurie remembered. "He's the one critic who can convince me to see a film that everyone else hates. He has this ability to find qualities where others cannot."

Now Ebert has invited Lurie, a film critic turned film director, to bring his movie "Nothing But the Truth" to Ebert's 11th annual film festival, which opened Wednesday and continues through Sunday at the Virginia Theatre.

Lurie, who will be on stage with actor Matt Dillon, who plays a prosecutor in the movie, after the sold-out 6:30 p.m. Saturday screening, said he's grateful that Ebert is allowing him to show the film to 1,500 cinephiles. Most of them will not have seen the Lurie movie before......

04/24/09 Calling All Bidders

Town of Greenwich to issue consultant RFP
Pensions & Investments

By Douglas Appell

Town of Greenwich (Conn.) Retirement System will issue an RFP for investment consulting services, confirmed Peter P. Mynarski Jr., the town’s comptroller and a trustee of the $238 million system.

NEPC, the system’s investment consultant for the past six years, is welcome to rebid, Mr. Mynarski said.

The RFP should be issued in the coming weeks, with the board likely to make a choice from among three to five finalists by July, he said.

In separate telephone interviews, Mr. Mynarski and Michael Pagliaro, the system’s board chairman, said the RFP wasn’t related to recent news that the Town of Fairfield, Conn., filed a lawsuit against NEPC, its investment consultant, because of Fairfield’s losses from investments in funds that channeled money to disgraced financier Bernard L. Madoff.

NEPC officials have said Fairfield’s Madoff exposure predated NEPC’s hiring by the town, and that NEPC had been urging Fairfield to reduce its exposure to Madoff.

Mr. Pagliaro said as far as he knows, the defined benefit plan’s five-member board has “no major issues or problems with NEPC.”

Putting out an RFP every four or five years is standard operating procedure, although with all the events of the past 12 months, there was some delay this time around, Mr. Mynarski said.
Mr. Pagliaro said his board will make a recommendation to the town’s Board of Estimate and Taxation, which has “never not taken our recommendation.”

Robert Stone, vice chairman of the Board of Estimate and Taxation, said in an interview that the performance of Greenwich’s defined benefit plan in recent years doesn’t appear “relatively poor,” but it’s always healthy to test whether the plan is getting the best professional advice available.

04/24/09 WHERE"S THE JUSTICE? Jason Cunningham Gets Probation As Byram Teenager John Bria Lies In His Cold Grave

Greenwich man gets probation for drug charge

One of two people charged with narcotics possession following the 2004 overdose death of a town teenager pleaded guilty Wednesday.

Jason Cunningham, 24, of Greenwich, received a five-year suspended jail sentence and three years of probation with no special conditions, which means he could face jail time if he violates his probation, according to his attorney.

Cunningham was arrested in September 2008, four years after John Bria III was found dead in the basement of his Hollow Wood Lane home.....

....Prior to the plea, Cunningham attempted to enter a diversionary program, but was denied by a judge who said the circumstances of the case were too severe.

Police also previously charged Savanna Lamotte, 23, of Greenwich, with possession of a narcotic. Lamotte has yet to enter a plea. She also was denied the diversionary program earlier this year.....

04/24/09 PRESS RELEASE: Giving Teens an Edge in College, Career as SuperFutures Launches Unique Youth Leadership Program at United Nations

With parents spending thousands of dollars on college and worried about their teen's preparedness for the working world amid an economic recession, a new organization -- SuperFutures.org -- today launched to help young people develop the global leadership skills they need to succeed in college, career and life.

SuperFutures.org is kicking off with a unique teen summer program -- The Youth Assembly at the United Nations and SuperFutures Youth Leadership Program -- designed to give motivated teens, 14-18 years of age, an opportunity to learn about global issues, hear from world leaders, develop their own projects, and learn vital skills for success in their ventures, jobs and beyond.
"We know more than ever that this is a global world and the students who are part of that are the ones who will be prepared to compete in a tough job climate," said Patrick Sciarratta, Co-Founder of the Youth Assembly at the United Nations and a member of SuperFutures' Advisory Board. "SuperFutures is providing motivated high school students the chance to turn what they learn into action -- into an experience that can make a difference in their college applications, their lives, even in the lives of others."

SuperFutures.org provides motivated high school students with teen leadership experiences that build on their unique personal strengths. The teen summer program teaches critical skills for success that aren't taught in our schools and helps guide teens to find life paths that can also have a positive impact on communities, businesses and families.

"So many professional adults tell me they wish they had known about their career options when they were young," says Laura Flanagan, a New York-based family therapist. "As a result, many have led frustrated lives, less fulfilling lives, wondering 'what-if'. That's why SuperFutures is so desperately needed -- to give our youth the opportunity to explore their true passions and turn that into real success."

SuperFutures has built an impressive Advisory Board including Harvard Business School Professor Lynda Applegate, Bryan Stone of the World Economic Forum and Bob Ghoorah, Silicon Valley general counsel to Ning, which powers the largest number of social networking sites and was started by Netscape Founder Marc Andreesen and Gina Bianchini. It was founded by a nationally known entrepreneur, author, and financial commentator who's appeared on Oprah, CNN, Today and many other programs.

The SuperFutures.org youth leadership program takes place August 4-12, in conjunction with the Youth Assembly at the UN (in its sixth year) and will feature Arun Gandhi, great grandson of Mehatma Gandhi and Director of the MK Gandhi Center for Global Non-Violence; Marc Weiner, host of Nickelodeon's long-running Weinerville, as well as inspirational, youth leadership trainers -- those who focus on the 'next wave' of career success -- and a host of successful social entrepreneurs.

Parents and teens are urged to apply by May 15th for special pricing and to ensure placement, which is limited.

Miller, Office for Black Catholic Ministries, the Jewish War Veterans, Russian War Veterans, Rabbi Joseph Gopin, Rabbi James Rosen, Cantor Sanford Cohn and ushers from Hebrew High School of New England. U.S. President Barack Obama has paid tribute to the memory of the 6 million Jews murdered in the Holocaust. The president called on people worldwide to ensure that nothing like it ever happens again.
In a Holocaust Days of Remembrance ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, President Obama warned of the dangers of silence when atrocities are being committed. And he said bearing witness to such horrors is only the first step.
"To commit ourselves to resisting injustice and intolerance and indifference, in whatever forms they may take, whether confronting those who tell lies about history or doing everything we can to prevent and end atrocities like those that took place in Rwanda, those taking place in Darfur," Mr. Obama said.
Holocaust Days of Remembrance is a week-long observance, recalling the brutality of Nazi Germany and its collaborators toward Europe's Jews and others during World War II.
Mr. Obama did not name names, but said that some people still deny that the Holocaust took place.
"There are those who insist the Holocaust never happened, who perpetrate every form of intolerance-racism and anti-Semitism, homophobia, xenophobia, sexism and more-hatred that degrades its victim and diminishes us all," Mr. Obama said.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has often denied the Holocaust. At the Capitol Hill ceremony, Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel condemned the Iranian leader's comments this week at the United Nations Conference on Racism.
"I just came back from Geneva, where we attended an event that was incredibly offensive," Wiesel said.....

04/24/09 The Raw Greenwich News Feed: The daily diary of Greenwich Life (Updated)

If You Want To Know What's Really Going On In Greenwich You Have To Read Out Of Town News Sources

Here Is The Story That Managing Editor Bruce Hunter Failed To Cover Online At The Greenwich Time .....

How Bernie did it
CNNMoney.com

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- The employees were transfixed. Standing on the mid-Manhattan trading floor of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities in late 2007, a half-dozen staffers stared up at the ceiling-mounted TV as CNBC aired a report on the mysterious Palm Beach death of a hedge fund manager who had been leading a double life. The police, it appeared, were even considering the possibility that he had been murdered. "Bernie," someone casually asked as Madoff happened to walk by, "have you heard of this guy?"

Madoff glanced at the screen, blanched, and exploded: "Why the fuck would I be interested in some shit like that?" The employees recoiled. "I never saw him react like that before," says a Madoff trader who witnessed the outburst. "It obviously hit a nerve.".....

....Then there was the man who ran the floor, Frank DiPascali, Madoff's chief deputy on 17. He was a 33-year veteran of the firm, with a rough Queens accent and a high-school education, but nobody was quite sure what he did or what his title was. "He was like a ninja," says a former trader in the legitimate operation upstairs. "Everyone knew he was a big deal, but he was like a shadow.".....

A Bit About Greenwich Resident Mark Madoff:

....Mark was in charge of the main trading business at the time the firm collapsed. If he didn't have his younger brother's intellect, he had the people skills that marked him as heir to the Madoff throne. A frat boy, he was easygoing and low-key, occasionally driving his Vespa to work from his SoHo apartment. In his younger days, he would accompany his fellow traders to the topless bar Scores......

A Bit About Greenwich Resident Walter Noel And His Fairfield Greenwich Feeder Fund:

.....Then came the closest call: The SEC launched an investigation in 2006. A whistleblower named Harry Markopolos had spent years trying to persuade the SEC that Madoff was running a Ponzi scheme (he had been a key source for the Mar/Hedge article). The SEC also examined whether Fairfield Greenwich, a giant feeder fund, was properly disclosing the extent of its reliance on Madoff.

Madoff had always been terrified of the SEC. "Every time the SEC came into the office," remembers one longtime employee, "Bernie was a basket case." Wherever Madoff was in the world, he would fly back, even for a routine examination. He peppered employees with questions about their preparedness. "What's up?" he would ask nervously. "What's up? What's up?"

This time Madoff was being asked specifically about his fraudulent investment business. Once again he prepared -- not only himself but also his customer Fairfield Greenwich. A phone conversation with representatives of Fairfield Greenwich in December 2005 was taped, transcribed, and made public as part of a Commonwealth of Massachusetts suit charging Fairfield Greenwich with essentially abdicating its responsibility to protect its investors. The transcript provides a revealing example of Madoff's thinking and his ability to manipulate.

"Obviously, first of all, this conversation never took place ... okay?" Madoff began. ("Yes, of course," was the reply from Fairfield Greenwich's risk manager, though the company has since asserted that it informed the SEC of the conversation at the time.) Madoff proceeded to spin a strange, fragmentary -- he seemed to interrupt himself every few words -- self-contradictory set of talking points for Fairfield to follow in its SEC interview.....

.....Madoff was telling Fairfield to deny the obvious: that he was managing their money. At the same time, he portrayed his firm's role as something well known to the SEC. "They're aware of the fact that we do this," Madoff said, adding later, "The commission knows how we -- how we operate." (An SEC spokesman declined to comment.)

Madoff went on to disparage the SEC investigation as a "fishing expedition," saying that "these girls" -- the SEC's lawyers -- might not understand the strategy, and implying that they might not press too hard because SEC lawyers have ambitions to go into lucrative private practice and don't want to alienate the sorts of firms that might hire them. "It's none of their business," he added. Madoff, who appeared at times to be reading from a list of bullet points, also advised the Fairfield Greenwich team on the tone they should take. "You don't want them to think that you're concerned about anything ... You're best off [if] you just be, you know, casual." Fairfield has said it told the truth to the SEC.

When it was his turn to be interviewed by the SEC, in May 2006, Madoff flat-out lied. When he was asked, for example, "Is it correct, then, that the equities are traded in Europe?" he responded, "Yes." (Madoff often told people he made all sorts of trades in Europe, where it would be harder to verify what he was doing.) Needless to say, there were no equities being traded in Europe or anywhere else.....

.....The man once famous for rebuffing potential investors was now openly soliciting the ultrawealthy: Ken Langone, the Pritzker family, and others were invited to invest. And Madoff leaned on some of his most loyal investors for cash infusions. Carl Shapiro ponied up $250 million. Some of the principals at Fairfield Greenwich added another $15 million. But it just wasn't enough......

But It Is Not All Bad News For Greenwich Resident Walter "Feeder Fund" Noel.....

Madoff Lieutenant Negotiating Plea Deal, Naming Names
The Business Insider

Apparently he can't implicate Fairfield Greenwich in the fraud either, which is good news for them, though they don't have to be directly complicit in it to be in a whole world of legal trouble for their lack of due diligence.
