Kim Orlando’s latest enterprise — TravelingMom.com — is hardly her first. The lifelong entrepreneur was born in Chicago, and kicked off her career at just 11 years old, when she won a newspaper sales contest while visiting family in Philadelphia.

After completing the McGuire Entrepreneurship Program and graduating from the Eller College, Orlando took a position with the marketing communications firm of Young and Rubicam. Six months after joining the company’s Cato Johnson division, Orlando founded ACT Workshops, which aimed to improve kids’ self-confidence through improvisational and commercial acting workshops.

In 1995, Orlando and her husband relocated to Connecticut. “That thread of owning my own business continued,” she says, this time in the form of a document management business she founded while working at a pharmaceutical company. When the company moved to New Jersey, Orlando became a traveling mom, not in the sense she had originally imagined, frolicking on exotic sandy beaches, but with weekly overnight commutes to New Jersey.

Orlando left the document management business 18 months ago and created TravelingMom.com, an online magazine with family travel information and a community where mothers exchange practical ideas.

The site also includes stories and interviews with real traveling moms.

For more information you can email: korlando@travelingmom.com

MORE INFORMATION:

Kim Orlando knows a thing or two about traveling with a brood. The 44-year-old, Greenwich, Conn., wife and mother left her career as a document manager two and a half years ago to devote her time to TravelingMom.com, a Web site that offers vacation advice and ideas to mothers

It hasn't always been easy to come up with interesting travel options for busy parents. "When I first started TravelingMom, I was really motivated to find resorts that don't just have an all-day camp for the kids," says Orlando. "I was often met by blank stares [from travel professionals]. I wanted something more inclusive; activities that the whole family could do together.".......

A great editorial can do things no news article can. It can expose hypocrisies and ideological contradictions with the stroke of a pen and the flash of an eye. Hospital copes with economy - Amid all the other concerns created by the slumping economy, one of the last things we would want to worry about is whether our local hospital can continue to provide us with the care we have come to expect.
While it is true that Greenwich Hospital is feeling financial pressures like other medical institutions and, indeed, most of us, hospital chief Frank Corvino still has been able to offer some reassuring words to the community.

"This is going to be a tough year," he said in an interview recently. But then he explained that the hospital is making economies aimed at avoiding compromises with the quality of care and patient safety. And even more positive: "We're using this time as an opportunity to get better so we can emerge as a stronger organization."

It's remarkable that Mr. Corvino remains so upbeat given recent events.....

'Spirit' was a little different for church back then - Histories of the town of Greenwich make great reading, and I've sought them out ever since I first arrived in 1956.
I concentrated on the Stanwich section of backcountry Greenwich ever since I built a house here over 40 years ago. I've particularly enjoyed the nearby, serene presence of Stanwich Congregational Church; I was never a member, but I knew its long-time pastor, Nathan Adams, and cherished his friendship. I know the stories of the church's early pastors and members, some of whose houses, dating to the 1700s, still dot nearby corners; you can tell which ones they are by how close they are to the road. The church's bell, ringing the call to worship on Sunday morning, is also, in this small corner of the world, a testimony to a peace and security you wish every corner of the world could enjoy.
But things around here were not always placid, endlessly serene. Here, from a book titled, "The Back Country Church," by Don Osgood, is this:
"In the spring of 1836 Sister Ellen Holly was sent two written admonitions for 'heretical sentiment.' The second was read to the church and a vote was taken to ask her to show any reason why she shouldn't be rejected by the church. There was no response and after weeks of deliberation, the church voted to excommunicate her."
Unlike today's backcountry Greenwich, or anywhere else in Greenwich, or anywhere else in the country, where one neighbor may barely know another, residents in those days -- even though separated by vast acreage, rudimentary transportation and non-existent technology -- tried to be helpful, in an up-to-date, nosey sort of way. You tried to make sure your neighbor got into heaven, even if your neighbor had to do it your way ..... BLAH .... BLAH ..... BLAH .... BLAH ..... BLAH ..... BLAH .....BLAH ...... BLAH ..... Ex- Greenwich Time Managing Editors Never Die, They Just Refuse To Fade Away By Writing Long Boring Columns About Postage Stamp Rate Hikes And The Post Office Bureaucracy......
There Are So Many Problems In Greenwich Government And Bernie "I Wont Rock The Boat" Yudain Writes About His Lost Pension Check.

Ex-Greenwich Time Managing Editor Bernie Yudain
A need to check up with the postal service -

This is the sad saga of the check that went astray:

It so happens that in my Feb. 22 column, I congratulated the postal service that we get here in Greenwich, and I'll stick by it. But I can't resist passing on a coincidental incident.

Only a few days after that comment appeared, on March 1, the usual federal pension check which always arrives on the button on the first of the month failed to appear in our mailbox. Paltry as that instrument may be, it's a welcome visitor.

The next day I called our local post office. Some nice man listened and commiserated, but assured me there was no way they can check it out. I would have to call the people in Washington.
After an anguished search to figure out whom to call, I found a number. I ran the lab-rat maze of press-this-and-press-that automated directives before I finally got a human -- a nice lady. She listened, asked for numbers, codes, Social Security -- the works. At the end she explained that they can't do anything until five days passes from the date of the delivery failure. Call back, she advised.

I called Saturday. Sorry, have to call on a working day, a canned message asserted.

Monday I called again. This time I got twice as long a run-around. After some 15 minutes, on came a live voice -- very nice but not quite as cordial as my earlier contact. In the end, she informed me that they'll send a replacement check.

Before she dismissed me, I asked, "By the way, I don't expect to ever see that missing check, but if by odd chance it should show up, what should I do? Return it? Tear it up? What?"
"Send it back," she said. We then parted.

A few hours later, the phone rang. It was my friend Penny at Parsonage Cottage, that excellent home for the elderly.

"Guess what?" she said. "I have your Social Security check here." ..... BLAH .... BLAH ..... BLAH .... BLAH ..... BLAH ..... BLAH .....BLAH ...... BLAH ..... BLAH ..... BLAH ..... BORING ...... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz ......

What's Brewing: A toast to Munich - German city whose name means "little monks." The Dominicans, Franciscans, Paulaners and Augustinians in Munich itself, and orders such as the Carmelites who settled outside the city, carried on a rich tradition of beer-making whose joys are especially celebrated during the Lenten season, as late winter turns to spring.

Among German beer lovers -- doesn't that sound redundant? -- Lent is also known as "starkbierzeit," or strong beer season.

Brews crafted for this time of year were typically fortified with added barleymalt, increasing their calories to fortify the friars as they fasted dawn-to-dusk from solid food while seeking greater levels of piety and spirituality.

Of course, the extra malts also added to the alcohol content of the beer, which, consumed on an otherwise empty stomach, no doubt helped the brothers achieve an enhanced sense of inner peace ..... HEARST NEWSPAPAPER BUSINESS REPORTER JIM ZEBORA TOTALLY MISSED THE GREENWICH PONZI SCHEME AT "WG TRADING" IN FACT THE GREENWICH TIME ONLY STARTED REPORTING ON THE MISDEEDS OF "PAUL GREENWOOD" AND "STEPHEN SWARTZ " TODAY IN AN WIRE REPORT FROM BLOOMBERG BUSSINESS NEWS:
By David Voreacos and Patricia Hurtado
BLOOMBERG NEWS
Posted: 03/03/2009 06:55:17 PM EST
U.S. prosecutors and regulators took only three weeks to accuse money managers Paul Greenwood and Stephen Walsh of misappropriating $554 million once an industry self-regulatory body grew suspicious
Greenwood, 61, and Walsh, 64, were charged
Feb. 25
with using WG Trading Investors in Greenwich and related companies as a personal piggy bank to buy homes, cars, horses and collectible teddy bears. The case began when the National Futures Association learned Feb. 3 about a private lawsuit against Mark Bloom, a former WG Trading employee charged Feb. 25 in a separate fraud.
The NFA decided to audit those of its 4,000 member firms that worked with Bloom, according to association Chief Executive Officer Daniel Roth.
On Feb. 5,
it began auditing Greenwood and Walsh, who failed to cooperate, Roth said. A week later, the NFA suspended the men, who worked in Greenwich. Four federal agencies then launched a criminal and civil inquiry.
"This is the largest fraud case we've ever had {AND I CAN'T BELIVE HEARST NEWSPAPER BUSINESS REPORTER JIM ZEBORA MISSED IT} ," said Roth, a 25-year veteran of Chicago-based NFA. "Basically, they were stealing the money to support their lifestyles. In some ways it was a typical Ponzi scheme. What sets it apart is the magnitude of the loss {AND HOW HEARST NEWSPAPER BUSINESS REPORTER TOTALLY MISSED THE STORY IN GREENWICH} .".......
.....The next day, they visited the Greenwich offices of Walsh and Greenwood, who run WG Trading Investors, an unregistered investment vehicle; WG Trading Company Limited Partnership, a registered broker-dealer; and Westridge Capital Management Inc., a registered investment adviser in Santa Barbara, Calif.

They reviewed some records for WG Trading, a commodity pool, which showed $1.3 billion in assets, NFA records show. That included $532 million in accounts receivable not included in an annual financial report audited by a national accounting firm, according to the NFA.
Investigators from the NFA also found a $293 million receivable owed by Greenwood and one for $261 million by Walsh, according to the NFA.

Walsh and Greenwood offered little help to NFA investigators, association records show. Walsh talked to the NFA for 20 minutes on Feb. 5 and briefly on the phone five days later. Greenwood was only sporadically available to the NFA during its weeklong audit, records show.

"When we started asking questions about the location of assets, they refused to answer," said Roth, 59. "The main problem we had with their books and records is that we couldn't see them. They wouldn't give them to us."

The NFA suspended the two men and alerted the CFTC, which in turn contacted the SEC, Roth said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Attorneys Office in Manhattan joined the probe.

"We responded very quickly, took prompt action and coordinated with other regulators, {AS HEARST NEWSPAPER REPORTER JIM ZEBORA SAT ON HIS ASS DREAMING OF HIS MOME BREWED BEERS} " Roth said .....

If you're seeking this January to drive the cold winter away or otherwise perk up your spirits, the dark, black beers of winter are just the thing.
Porter and stout on the ale side, and bock on the lager, bring unique, warming qualities to a beer glass or mug. Sometimes thick and oftentimes mysterious, it might seem amazing that they're kin to the golden beers of summer. These brews are yet another manifestation of the brewmaster's art.

03/13/09 Governor Rell Is Crossing The Line By Taxing Shell Fishermen Like Ed Stilwagen Out Of Bussiness

Really Poor Thinking: Misguided Conneticut Govenor Has Is Flushing A Traditional Greenwich Industry Down The Toilet

Last Year Greenwich Lost One Of Two Of It's Working Farms And Now Jody Rell Is Going To Wipe Out Our Greenwich Shell Fisher Man.....

This Helps Jody And Hurts Greenwich

Locals believe Rell's proposed tax is a bit fishy
Westport News

State Sen. Bob Duff (D-Norwalk) met last Thursday with local shellfishermen at Norm Bloom & Sons -- a Norwalk-based shellfishing operation that has harvested oysters and clams for three generations -- to speak out against Gov. M. Jodi Rell's proposal to charge commercial shellfishermen $1 for every bushel of shellfish harvested.....

....."This is an unfair and aggressive tax on the shellfish industry that could cost many people their jobs," Duff said. "These people work hard, play by the rules, get their hands dirty and make an honest living. They are our neighbors We are going to fight for our oystermen, lobstermen and shellfishermen."

Duff also explained that the proposal misfires because it would tax shell fishermen $1 on the bushel -- a unit of measurement now largely outdated. Most orders from restaurants and other businesses now come in the form of shellfish counts.....

.....Ed Stilwagen, of Atlantic Clam Farms of Greenwich, harvests from about 2,500 acres in Greenwich waters......

Stilwagen, like Duff, explained the tax would be inappropriate because of the variation possible in sizing up a bushel.

"It's basically an unenforceable tax," he said, explaining that confusion would arise at local docks between state officials and shellfishermen as to how many bushels, exactly, any given harvest might entail. Those types of circumstances could result in millions of dollars in litigation costs and could negate profits the state might accumulate from the tax, Stilwagen said.....

An exhibit of contemporary masterpieces focusing solely on female subjects will be shown at Sotheby's New York City galleries next month

The works include Andy Warhol's "Turquoise Marilyn," Edvard Munch's "Madonna" and Willem de Kooning's "Women III." Sculptures, works on paper and photographs also will be displayed.

Suspended lacrosse coach had prior DWI arrest

By Debra Friedman
STAFF WRITER

Suspended Greenwich High School lacrosse coach Paul Burke was required to sign a "Last Chance Agreement" to keep his athletic position because a 2008 drunken driving arrest was not his first, school officials confirmed Thursday...... In addition to the two DWI charges, Burke served 30 days in Webster Correctional Institute in Cheshire in August 1999 after he was convicted of driving while his license was suspended for DWI, according to state Department of Corrections records ..... According to police, Burke smashed his BMW Z4 into a stone wall on June 15, 2008, on Middlesex Road. He had a blood alcohol content of .29 percent -- more than triple the legal limit -- and was coming from Greenwich at the time of the crash around 2:30 a.m., according to the arrest warrant. He was arrested two months after the accident and charged with DWI

WHY CAN'T ROOKIE GREENWICH TIME REPORTER DEBRA FRIEDMAN AND HER BUDDIES AT THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH?

COACH PAUL BURKE NEEDS TO START GOING TO AA

NO ONE IS HELPING HIM OR PROTECTING CHILDREN BY MINIMIZING OR COVERING UP THIS ONGOING PROBLEM

ROOKIE REPORTER DEBRA FRIEDMAN INCOMPLETE GREENWICH TIME SO-CALLED "NEWS STORY" CONTINUES.....

Records from the school's human resources office confirm that Burke had a prior DWI arrest and served time in jail on the suspended license charge, according to Ellen Flanagan, human resources director for Greenwich Public Schools. According to an on-line database, Burke had a prior DWI arrest in 1998. It is not clear where the offense took place...... Burke was hired by the school as a teacher in 1990 and briefly resigned during the 1991-1992 school year. He was rehired the next school year and has been employed as a teacher with the school ever since, Flanagan said......

HEY DEBRA WHAT'S UP WITH THAT 1991 RESIGNATION?

Shouldn't Hearst Newspaper Stories Tell Us Who, What, When, Where And WHY ?

Well This Is Rookie Greenwich Time Reporter Debra Friedman's Second Attempt At Telling The Whole Story.

Yesterday, Her First Story Only Reported About Betty Sternberg's So-Called "Last Chance Agreement That Does Not Affect His Teaching Job If He Gets Arrested Again"

Now Today Rookie Greenwich Time Reporter Debra Friedman Partially Reported On The Previous Arrests, Jail Time And Resignations That Have Been Covered Up For Years.

Maybe, Tomorrow Rookie Reporter Debra Friedman Will File A Third Report And Do What The Late Journalist Paul Harvey Used To Do....

TELL US THE REST OF THE STORY

If Rookie Reporter Friedman Fails To Deliver The Story It Will Once Again Prove That Greenwich Time Managing Editor Bruce Hunter Need To Be Replaced By Hearst Newspapers.

School officials told Rookie Reporter Debra Friedman that Coach Paul Burke supposedly immediately notified them of the Darien accident in June of last year and of his arrest last August.

But, school officials did nothing all of last semester or half of this semester, until concerned Greenwich High School parents started getting fed up with GHS Headmaster Alan Capasso's cover ups and started talking to citizen journalists and bloggers in Greenwich.

Then all of a sudden there is an emergency meeting with school officials and lacrosse parents.

Then, after Greenwich Roundup broke the Paul Burke DWI story, Greenwich Public School Superintendent Betty Sternberg suspended Mr. Burke and issued her so-called "Last Chance" statement.

If Greenwich Time Managing Editor Bruce Hunter doesn't get rookie reporter Debra Friedman to tell the rest of the story to the parents and taxpayer of Greenwich, then parents and school officials are going to once again bring the details to Greenwich Roundup.

And Hearst Newspaper President Steven Swarts
is probably going to start saying......

"Why Am I Paying Bruce Hunter All This Freaking Money When Citizen Journalists And Blogger Are Scooping The Greenwich Time Day After Day."
