03/16/10 Greenwich Schools Closed Wed., Mar. 17, 2010

All Schools Closed:
Wednesday, March 17, 2010

CL&P crews and Town tree clearing crews are making progress, however, five
of our schools remain without power. Many roads are impassable and others
remain unsafe for pedestrians and school buses. The Superintendent
receives updates throughout the day. Unfortunately, there is no way to
predict when schools will reopen. This is a complex decision with everyone
working very hard to restore power and safe roadways as soon as possible.
Our objective is to remain closed for as few days as possible.

Please continue to check the web site, phone messages, local media, etc.
as you are able to for updated information. Thank you for your patience
and cooperation during this extraordinary time. Be safe, drive carefully
and continue to avoid ANY loose wires.

03/16/19 READER SUBMITTED COMMENTS: Where are the utility crews

On Sunday afternoon I had emergency need to drive from central Greenwich to Hawthorn, NY just a few miles from the Westchester Airport. I passed through many local streets there that seemed to have suffered equal tree damage to power poles and lines, compared to Greenwich. Yet every street had already been cleaned up and made passable. There were neat piles of stacked cut-up branches. Many Con-Ed crews were observed out working. Power was still out, but the work had been finished to clear secondary roads already.

Returning on I-95 I observed many convoy utility crews passing through Greenwich on their way into Westchester and points west.

Just a question - Could the Greenwich Town position toward CL&P tree trimming and line clearing crews, as well as our precarious relationship in Hartford to the rest of the State, put Greenwich utility relief on the back burner of emergency services?

Don't know, but how many crews have you seen in your neighborhood?

Name withheld on request.

03/16/10 Tom Foley: Make your voice heard on health care

Tom Foley for Governor

Congress and the President are trying to ram through a health care bill that the majority of Americans don't want. You can help defeat this bill by making your voice heard.

Please call or email your Member of Congress and ask him or her to vote "NO" to the Senate Health Care Bill. Their phone numbers are listed below. To send an email, visit their websites listed below and use the prompts.

Tell them that this bill is way too expensive and will dramatically increase the state deficit in Connecticut, perhaps by as much as $1 billion per year. Tell them that most Americans don't want their health care coverage changed and don't want a wholesale change in our health care system. Tell them that when the health care bill was first proposed, it was supposed to reduce health care costs - but all those provisions, including ending abusive lawsuits, are no longer part of the bill. Tell them that this health care bill is simply bad policy and bad for America. Tell them that, as your representative, if they don't vote against this bill, you will vote against them in November.

03/16/10 RTM Moderator Thomas Byrne's Anger Management Problem Is Hindering New RTM Members

The Representative Town Meeting's New Members First Legislative Actions Were To Vote On RTM Moderator Thomas Byrne And Moderator Pro Tempore Joan Caldwell's Incumbent Positions Of Authority.

This Was An Ugly, Confusing And Messy Process.

Then The New RTM Members Had To Witness Mr. Byrne's Repeated Harangues As Several Members Tried To Amend The Legislative Body's Minutes From The January Meeting.

All The RTM Members Wanted To Do Was To Reflect The Fact That Mr. Byrne Had Cast A Vote After The Vote Denying Paul Curtis A Second RTM Vote Against Joan Caldwell.

The Angry Moderator Did Not Want His Unorthodox Actions To Be Reflected In The Minutes.

The Fact Is, That Mr. Byrne Should Have Recused Himself As Moderator During The Debate And Discussion Of His Controversial Voting Maneuver.

Ms. Caldwell Is Now Viewed As A Paper Tiger Who Is Propped Up Only By Mr. Byrne's Underhanded And Questionable Voting Methods.

The News Around Town Is That New RTM Members Have Complained To Byrne Some In Writing, And Some In Person.

The New RTM Members Are Asking, "How Can They Serve Their Legislative Districts Properly If We Have To Be Afraid Of Speaking Our Minds."

No New RTM Member Wants To Be Publicly Dressed Down By An Out Of Control Moderator On Cable TV As He Tries To Represent His Or Her Area Of Town.

Byrne's Behaviour At The March RTM Meeting Was A Poor Civics Lesson For The Newly Elected Members.

What Did The New RTM Members Think As They Witnessed An Irate Byrne Blast Out "I Am Not Recognizing You, Mr. von Keyserling, Excuse, Mr. von Keyserling, You Do Not Have The floor."

The Town Voters Expects The RTM to Be Transparent And Open.

It Is Disgusting That Byrne Has Brought Partisan Politics Into The RTM Moderators Position.

Greenwich News - March 16, 2010
The running of the rich: Is wealth changing Connecticut politics? (Connecticut Post)
Connecticut Attorney General, Richard Blumenthal, posed in his Greenwich home, Monday, March 8th, 2010.

Schools Closed In Fairfield Co. (The Hartford Courant)
Schools in Fairfield county closed as a result of the weekend storm. Darien Public Schools Fairfield Public Schools Greenwich Public Schools New Canaan Public Schools Norwalk Public Schools Stamford Public Schools Westport Public Schools School officials hope to determine this afternoon when schools will reopen.

Over the years, drug use in Greenwich has risen significantly
What use to be a small problem has developed in a larger one.
This issue is not made public by school officials or the Greenwich Time yet remains severely unresolved.
Greenwich High School which may seem like an other high school in fact has been a main part of the problem where drugs can be easily accessed on a regular basis.
An article was recently posted in the Greenwich Time, regarding drug sniffing dogs coming into the school to conduct searches.
To many, this may seem like a normal procedure, when in fact it is not.
Drug and other substances are in fact trafficked at the high school, which I am sure school officials are aware of but have done nothing, in order to keep the "Greenwich High Image" in tact.
If many people think drug use is not an issue, or dealers being located in Greenwich, then how do you explain Federal Agents raiding houses in Greenwich?
This a issue that has been well hidden among local media and town officials.
This drug use does not only pertain to marijuana which is heavily used by a large amount of younger residents in town, but other drugs as well such as cocaine have been in use as well.
Residents may wonder how one comes to the conclusion, but when you live here and you know where to get drugs and you don't even go to the high school or college there is obviously a problem.
I strongly believe this is an issue that had been covered up, and should be focused on more.
NORTH IDAHO Says....
Just from what I read way out West I can see that the solution to many of the town's problems is either throw a ton of money at it or sweep it under the rug. The residents don't seem to give a dam or send their kids to private school and the town employees for financial reasons live somewhere else!!
Strange situation!!
Sheesh Ersatz Vet says.....
"An article was recently posted in the Greenwich Time, regarding drug sniffing dogs coming into the school to conduct searches. To many, this may seem like a normal procedure, when in fact it is not. This bit seems to have a contradiction in it. If school officials are doing nothing, why were the drug dogs brought in?
I also question whether or not the problem is really growing. The author is happy to use the term "fact" but doesn't give any proof that the claimed facts are indeed facts.
It isn't as if substance abuse is anything new. I was in high school in the mid/late 70s and drugs were fairly popular back then. Dogs were never brought in back then. OTOH, there was an occasional drug bust in the school system. Is it growing in total number of users or in percentage of the population? Or is it just that the awareness has increased?
