Minor charges filed after Monday's car accident

A two-car accident blocked traffic in both lanes going eastbound on the Post Road and one lane going westbound at the intersection of Dayton Avenue between Stop & Shop and A&P Fresh Monday, and both drivers were cited with minor charges.

According to police reports, a Buick driven by Roy Aletti, 50, of Harrison, N.Y., traveling westbound on West Putnam Avenue, collided with a BMW driven by Melanie Yildizlar, 40, of 4 Sound Shore Drive, which was turning left out of the Stop & Shop parking lot onto West Putnam Avenue at about 5:50 on Monday evening. The collision forced Ms. Yildizlar’s vehicle partially off the road; it was found straddling the sidewalk and right-hand westbound lane when police arrived.

A passenger in Ms. Yildizlar’s vehicle complained of minor head pain at the scene and was taken to Greenwich Hospital for evaluation.....

United Way invests $2 million in town

The United Way of Greenwich Board of Directors has approved close to $2.2 million in distributions for programs that meet the health and human service needs of the community.

This represents a 5% overall increase from last year. According to United Way President Stuart Adelberg, the money will be raised throughout the United Way’s 2008-09 community-wide fund-raising campaign that began in September.

Turscanyi named Officer of Month

Police Officer Joseph Turscanyi has been named the Greenwich Police Department’s Officer of the Month for September after his role in catching a burglary suspect.According to the department,

Officer Turscanyi was on a routine patrol and was checking 1 Stallion Trails because of past reports of trespassers on the property, when he saw a car parked near the side of the house occupied by a woman in the driver’s seat.

The woman told him she had driven someone to the property because he wanted to pick up his belongings, which were inside the house. Officer Turscanyi told headquarters and waited for backup units to arrive at the scene. He learned the man tried to flee the scene when he saw the police officer there because the man left a message on the woman’s cell phone. Through this means he was able to contact the man and convince him to surrender.....

First selectman seeks energy management team

First Selectman Peter Tesei is looking for qualified volunteer candidateo serve on a new Energy Management Team. The team is being put together following the unanimous adoption of an energy resolution presented to the Bod of Selectmen by the Environmental Action Task Force.


DMV bus will not return to Town Hall

Te Department of Motor Vehicles bus that comes to Town Hall monthly for license renewal will not be returning to town until further notice.

The First Selectman's office was informed of the news today by the Department of Motor Vehicles. October was the last visit. For information about the DMV, visit CT.gov/dmv.

BURGLARY


Ashleigh Singer, 23, of 51 Forest Ave., Riverside and Bridget Palazzo, 22, of 27 Richmond Drive, Old Greenwich were arrested Oct. 12 and charged with third degree burglary and criminal attempt at second degree larceny.

According to police, a witness described to officers a vehicle that had left the scene of a burglary and when it was discovered and pulled over Singer and Palazzo were found inside.

Police said Palazzo and Singer took things from a residence and stashed them in bags before they were interrupted by someone arriving at the scene. Singer was released on a $10,000 surety bond and Palazzo was released on a $5,000 surety bond. They are both due in court Oct. 20.


BREACH OF PEACE

Deron Cooper, 26, of Port Chester, N.Y. was arrested Oct. 13 and charged with breach of peace. Police had responded to the children’s playground on Museum Drive on the report of a fight. According to police, the investigation and discussion with witnesses revealed Cooper had come to the park to confront another person there selling ice cream, about a previous fight in Port Chester.

Police said Cooper yelled and cursed at the person before pushing him and then taking a swing. The two had been separated before police arrived. Cooper was released on a $100 cash bond and is due in court Oct. 20.

The candidate isn't photogenic, but his dog is. "I tell that to everyone," Ed Krumeich, 58, said last week, before door-to-door campaigning in Riverside, part of the 151st District he seeks to represent at the state House next term.

Police blotter

Deron Cooper, 27, of 61 Poningo St., Port Chester, N.Y., was arrested and charged with breach of peace following an altercation at a playground at 2 Museum Drive on Monday afternoon, police said.

Cooper went to the park to confront another "mystery" man, who was selling ice cream, regarding a previous altercation the two had in Port Chester, police said. Police said Cooper pushed the man and took a swing at him. The two were separated before police arrived, according to police.

Cooper was released on a $100 bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Monday.

Hilda Munoz, 60, of Bertolf Road, was arrested Saturday night and charged with breach of peace following a dispute with a "mystery" neighbor, police said.

Police responded and talked with a victim, who said Munoz approached her on the road and began yelling and waving her fists in the air, according to the police report.

The "mystery" neighbor told police it has been an ongoing problem for approximately three years, police said.

Munoz was issued a misdemeanor summons and was released on a promise to appear, police said. She is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Oct. 20.
