05/21/09 This Is What The Western Middle School Parents Were Given Today When They Picked Up There Sick Children

WMS Handout

Hello, this is Stacey Gross, Principal of Western Middle School, with an update as of 1:45pm today on our students' health situation. The District received notification today from the Greenwich Department of Health of one confirmed case of H1N1 virus (swine flu). On Friday, May 15th the student was symptomatic, was kept home from school and saw the doctor. He was tested positive for flu and was treated. His test results were forwarded to the State for further testing, the results of which were communicated to us today. The student was on the Nature's Classroom trip, but was no longer exhibiting symptoms.

Parents of the nineteen students sent home from the trip with symptoms were asked to take their children to their healthcare provider. To date, none of the students who have been tested for the flu have had positive results.

In accordance with State Department of Health recommendations we are not closing school at this time. We will continue to closely monitor student and staff illnesses and absences. As per standard practice, if your child exhibits symptoms of illness, please keep them at home and/or have them seen by a healthcare provider. We also ask that you contact the school nurse with any information on your child's illness.

Thank you very much and we will continue to provide you with regular updates. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions.

Stacey Gross
