If you reread the release I believe you will see we were attempting to talk up the town and not our own company. I don't see how that can be construed as pretentous.

Rabbi's Weekly Teaching

Sukkot

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

According to news reports, Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit is finally going to be released by Hamas as part of a prisoner exchange, albeit with very controversial mathematics: one Israeli versus hundred of terrorists in return.

While the politics of the cost to release Gilad can be debated, there is nothing but joy for his family that they will finally be able to welcome him home. The Israeli government has enabled this to happen at a very high price, but they are driven by the ethos of our Jewish perception that each and every Jew is part of our collective family.

As members of this collective Jewish family, in which each and every soul is precious, we are bound to each other; needing to vigorously confront that which threatens us. Jews in every corner of the earth must not only cherish our Jewish homeland of Israel, but must also defend and support her as well. How we effectively become educated on Israel and become her advocates is of utmost importance to these crucial efforts.

As I stated in my Rosh Hashanah sermon just two short weeks ago: we have to take action for Israel now. We have to do all we can before; once again, it's too late.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. understood the need to be united in the face of a storm. My co-religionist brother offered this spiritual charge in support of Israel:

Dr. King said: "Zionism is nothing less than the dream and the ideal of the Jewish people returning to live in their own land. The Scriptures tell us, the Jewish people once enjoyed a flourishing Commonwealth in the Holy Land. Driven from their homeland, their nation in ashes, forced to wander the globe, the Jewish people time and again suffered the lash of whichever tyrant happened to rule over them. How easy it should be, for anyone who holds dear this inalienable right of all mankind, to understand and support the right of the Jewish people to live in their ancient land of Israel. All men of good will exult in the fulfillment of God's promise that His People should return in joy to rebuild their plundered land. This is Zionism, nothing more, nothing less."

Our Jewish homeland is shaking in the wind. Lightning is striking. The storm is upon us; let's all respond to this crisis with decency, with dignity, and with brotherhood.

This link will provide you with the full text of my Rosh Hashanah sermon on this topic, and I invite your feedback. Additionally, I am providing the highlights of Temple Sholom's upcoming Israel Education and Advocacy programming as well as the action sheets we handed out at our Rosh Hashanah service inclusive of 13 concrete actions we can take in support of our Homeland and our Jewish brothers and sisters. Please click on the links above to learn about how Temple Sholom is taking action, and how you can become involved.

Just as hope - hatikvah - has been the guiding force and light that will, God willing, bring Gilad Shalit home, so it must be for us, to pray that our commitment to taking action for Israel now will bring about a time when all Israel, and every Jewish soul, shall rejoice in a future of safety, security and peace.

Am Yisrael Chai, v'Chag Sameach!!

-Rabbi Mitch

Special Sukkot Study with
Rabbi Mitch

and Dr. Rev. Jim Lemler

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

12:00 - 1:00pm

In the sacred Jewish season, we commemorate how the Children of Israel dwelled in sukkot (fragile booths) when they left Egypt. These temporary structures symbolize the connection between our own fragility as human beings and the compassionate power of God's sheltering presence. Rabbi Mitch and Dr. Reverend Jim Lemler will explore how this metaphor of fragility and power can help us to consider building the path of peace among people of faith, and the key questions that we encounter in this contrast between Divine authority and human frailty. We will welcome friends from Christ Church for this special Lunch 'n' Learn. A kosher lunch will be served.

This discussion is presented by the Sholom Center for Interfaith Learning and Fellowship.

Lunch 'n' Learn will continue on Tuesdays throughout this fall.

FIRST COUNTY’S MORTGAGE TEAM HIRES POST, ROBINSON

STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 11, 2011 -- Industry veterans, Bruce Post and Alice Robinson, recently joined First County Bank as mortgage loan originators adding to the bank’s growing department.

Their primary responsibilities include providing the front-facing link to solving customers’ borrowing needs as the bank continues to build a results-oriented sales team. They will capitalize on First County Bank’s huge growth opportunity in the residential mortgage market, matching the bank’s products and services to customer requirements. They will grow a base of new customers and referral sources, like realtors and attorneys, and cultivate the relationships to develop strong, repeat business from borrowers.

Their roles also include outreach to first-time homebuyers looking to get people into their next home. Both Post and Robinson are very familiar with residential mortgages for conventional, jumbo and construction loans.

Post, most recently a senior mortgage consultant with NewAlliance Bank in Milford, Conn., comes to First County Bank with more than 20 years experience as a sales person, sales manager and sales trainer. Post also worked for PHH Financial Services, First Franklin/Merrill Lynch, First Union Home Equity and AVCO Financial Services.

Prior to joining First County Bank, Robinson worked as a mortgage loan officer at Stamford First Bank. Prior to that, she worked at Bank of America for 21 years, leaving as a senior loan officer. Robinson, who has worked in the banking industry for more than 26 years, has also worked at Webster Bank and Fleet Bank.

“Both Bruce and Alice are very experienced loan originators who know the Fairfield County area and can match a bank loan product to meet a customer’s need,” said David Zamary, senior vice president, residential lending at First County Bank. “The addition of these two professionals will help our team of loan officers increase the residential home loan market, especially for first time home buyers and refi borrowers.”

Post, who lives in Orange, Conn. with his wife and three children, earned a bachelor’s degree in management and marketing from Abilene Christian University in Texas. Robinson, who lives in Norwalk with her son, earned certificates in business banking and accounting from the American Institute of Banking, and earned an associate’s degree in business finance and marketing from the Katherine Gibbs School.

First County Bank, headquartered in Stamford, Conn., is an independent mutual community bank with 15 branches in Stamford, Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk and Westport offering deposit products, mortgages, trust and investment services, business banking services and online banking. First County Bank, which celebrates its 160th anniversary this year, has more than 220 employees and assets in excess of $1.3 billion.
