09/25/11 Cos Cob Library hosts children’s Chinese art

The Cos Cob Library is host to a new display of children’s Chinese artwork, which is being exhibited in their Community Room through Sept. 30. The exhibit is sponsored by the Chinese Language School of Connecticut, the non-profit, Riverside-based provider of Chinese language programs to students, schools and corporations.

This year’s theme is “Inventions from the Middle Kingdom,” based on Simon Winchester’s book, The Man Who Loved China. The first day of the show coincided with the Library’s annual Open House and book fair on Saturday, Sept. 10. On display is a sampling of students’ work from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Katy Chen Myers, the school’s vice president of art and culture, explained, “We are so grateful for the Cos Cob library’s support of our children’s art and culture programs. CLSC’s curriculum integrates Chinese history, art and culture, and includes hands-on learning projects for students via weekly workshops, so each student can learn experientially, through art. The Greenwich community is very fortunate to have the Cos Cob library’s resources available to children, teens and families.”

Visitors can view the artwork during regular Library hours.

PRESS RELEASE FROM: The Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles

Greenwich, CT - The Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles (OFALS) seventh anniversary gala fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at The Harvard Club of New York City. The celebratory evening will honor Martha Stewart, who will receive the Leadership Award for Non-Profit Philanthropy, Russell Warren, MD, who will receive the Excellence in Sports Medicine Award, and John M. Bader, who will receive the Award for Embodying the Spirit of an Active Lifestyle. The menu will feature Celebrity Chef Michael Mina with wine pairing chosen by a world-famous sommelier.

The evening will begin with a champagne and hors d'oeuvres reception at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner which will once again feature a bone-healthy menu. Guests will also experience a special performance by the perennial classic-rock favorite, America, who evolved in the late 1960s and quickly harmonized to the top of the charts with their signature song, “A Horse with No Name.” America celebrated their 40th-year anniversary in 2010 and continues as a mainstay on the domestic and international concert circuit and a cornerstone of 70’s Top 40 FM rock radio.

Honorees include Martha Stewart, America’s most popular guide to stylish living, and known for her company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, which consists of her Emmy-award-winning television show, numerous best-selling books and product lines and widely-read magazines. Committed to healthy living, she has donated millions of dollars to Mount Sinai Hospital for a center for healthy aging.

Russell Warren, MD, has been with the Hospital for Special Surgery for thirty-four years. Dr. Warren was surgeon-in-chief, has been the team physician for the New York Giants for twenty years, and has been named New York Magazine’s Best Doctor for many years.

John M. Bader, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Halcyon Asset Management, will receive the Award for Embodying the Spirit of an Active Lifestyle. He and his wife, Peggy, have been involved with guiding the Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles for many years. Both pursue active lifestyles: enjoying kiteboarding, among other sports, and reside in New York City with their children.

Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Lifestyles, developed by Kevin Plancher, MD, a not-for-profit foundation whose principal mission is to promote, support, develop and encourage research and education concerning orthopaedic injuries and musculoskeletal diseases. Support will fund cutting edge research on new and minimally invasive ways to treat pain and keep individuals active. Proceeds will also provide hands on “Doctor for a Day” educational labs for middle school and high school students in the New York and Connecticut region. In the labs, the students will work directly with OFALS’ surgeons and learn how to mend broken bones on lifelike cadavers. 09/25/11 Adelle Alessandroni's Letter To Greenwich Roundup In Support Of Board Of Education Member Marianna Ponns Cohen

Dear Greenwich Roundup:

I am submitting the following letter to the editor in support of Ms. Ponns Cohen's candidacy for the Board of Education. I know her personally, and know the good work she does. She is a terrific and decent gal, and very smart, too.

Sincerely,

ADELLE ALESSANDRONI
OLD GREENWICH, CT 06870

To the editor:

Marianna Ponns Cohen has spent the past four years on the Board of Education working to stop bad things from happening in Greenwich and trying to make good things happen. Some highlights:

First, the prior superintendent tried to quietly negotiate a magnet school venture with Stamford – using mostly Greenwich and state money. Marianna almost singlehandedly exposed and stopped it. Next, this superintendent proposed introducing over 100 new "initiatives ," a plan so watered down there would be no way to determine what worked and what didn't. Marianna suggested 30 measurements instead – the board ignored her.

Then, Marianna recommended a budget review to help ensure an appropriate allocation of funding for students in the classrooms, rather than a continued churning of new "initiatives" that supported administrative staff and consultants. They attacked and silenced her.

In the past two years, the superintendent and the Board chair covertly signed on to expensive, "international" programs (IB) for Greenwich middle and high schools, before some board members knew anything about it. And Marianna discovered that the agents selling IB get a hefty chunk of the millions it costs every district. I've since learned that, if you try to leave IB, they help arrange lawsuits against your town. By the way, the board has not provided one IB academic success story to the public – another of those pesky questions Marianna keeps asking.

Marianna Ponns Cohen is certainly inconvenient for the rubber stamp Board of Education and their friends. But she is YOUR best friend as a taxpayer and parent. Vote for Marianna Ponns Cohen November 8.

09/25/11 Greenwich High School Teacher Jen Kennelly Wants To Be On The Fairfield Board Of Education Even Though Her School Failed NCLB Standards

Jen Kennelly currently teaches English literature at Greenwich High School and is running for the Fairfield Connecticut Board Of Education.

According to a Kennelly campgain supporter.....

"As a young professional administrator, Jen turned around a parochial school in New York’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” achieving significantly raised academic performance, increasing enrollment, reversing fiscal deficits, creating financial stability and, as coach of the basketball, team turning around a failed program into state champs.
Jen and her husband have three children attending Fairfield public schools and are dedicated to our community with many years serving with PTA activities, co-founding our Board of Education Cultural Diversity Task Force and achieving a gold medal performance as coach of the Stratfield Elementary School’s fifth grade International Odyssey of the Mind Competition."

WOW!!!

If this is all true, maybe we should take Ms. Kennelly out of that Greenwich High School English classroom and fire a very highly paid failed Greenwich High School administrator.
