Hardly remarkable that the elected and non-elected Greenwich "townies" occupying the hallowed halls of the Field Point administrative fiefdom practice cronyism.

It's rampant.

There are flocks of bureaucratic public servants nestled in every corner and along the hallways of Greenwich Town Hall that are entrusted to allegedly serve the interests of residents of illustrious hedge fund heaven AKA Greenwich, Connecticut.

The truth of the matter is, despite denial by top officials, the days of using political "juice" to secure a spot to roost is alive and thriving.

It is indeed deplorable and unconscionable for any respectable and responsible town resident to stand idly by and witness the ineptitude and/or disregard of the exigent needs of the citizenry during a major catastrophe like Irene.

It may be time to sweep the floors of all debris -- including the vestiges of cronyism and the sycophants that perpetuate gross negligence and maintenance of the corrupt old guard.

08/31/11 School Activities Status for Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Due to current road conditions, including closures as a result of downed trees and loose and fallen wires, many of the bus routes are not accessible and we are unable to provide the transportation necessary to hold the sixth and ninth grade orientations tomorrow (8/31). Therefore, orientation for sixth and ninth grade students is cancelled for Wednesday, August 31, 2011.

All other staff and student activities planned for August 31, 2011 will continue as scheduled.

Please continue to check the GPS web site and all other means of communication for updates. We will be making decisions about rescheduling sixth and ninth grade orientation activities and the opening status of school on Thursday (9/1) by 5:00 PM on Wednesday (8/31).

Be safe, drive carefully, and avoid any loose or fallen wires.

Please treat this as a formal FOIA request for the EPA Identification Number assigned to 10 Hillside Road, Greenwich High School.

On August 25, 2011 The Board Of Education stated in a public meeting it had obtained all required permits for work in process at 10 Hillside Road which involves dredging and filling a self-described swamp, as well as disposing of hazardous waste uncovered in the process.

I have scoured the EPA website looking for these permits to no avail. Every municipal, state, and federal hazardous waste disposal permit is, by law, supposed to be available on this site indexed by EPA Identification Number.

By law, occupancy and work at 10 Hillside Road must cease and desist immediately to assure the safety of our children and safe disposal of hazardous materials until all required licenses and permits are properly noticed, secured, and available to the public for review.

The Town cannot simply claim it has permits no one can find.

Second Request: This is the second time I have formally requested this information. A response is required immediately.

08/30/11 Greenwich Received Over 6" Of Rainfall And Had More Than 25% Of Its Roads Blocked By Fallen Trees And Lost Power In 50% Of The Town

Greenwich is relatively well-off in comparison to other towns in the state, which lost entire homes to severe flooding and reported much higher power outage percentages.

As of Tuesday morning over 50 Connecticut communities were still reporting power outages of between 80 to 100 percent.

The Town of Greenwich has started to assemble cost estimates for damage from the storm so the state can begin requesting aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The FEMA process has historically been very bureaucratic.

Competition for the funding will be fierce, since FEMA currently has less than $800 million in its disaster coffers and we have extremist TEA Party lunatics like Eric Cantor who want to deny funds to towns like Greenwich

Hopefully Greenwich Jim Himes' office has said Connecticut will be eligible for FEMA funding once its damages exceed the $4.6 million threshold.

The Town Of Greenwich's costs will mainly come from labor, overtime, equipment and supply expenses.

The Greenwich Emergency Management Coordinator currently does not have an estimate for how much Sunday's storm has cost the town in terms of damage and overtime expenses.

There's been a lot of damage. The town's number could be rather big.

Greenwich town workers have been on the streets around-the-clock since Sunday, working to remove trees and debris from Stamford streets. About a quarter of Greenwich's streets had some kind of blockage or were impassable after Sunday's storm

Over 30 Greenwich streets were still blocked as of today.

The Town DPW and tree crews have worked well together throughout this storm

The police and fire and EMS, who have been communicating constantly with the Greenwich Emergency Management Office, reporting downed lines, downed trees.

08/30/11 Trouble Is Brewing On King Street: Two Nursing Homes On King Street, Are Still Without Power

Town And CL&P Crews Targeted The King Street Nursing Homes Last Night, But Greenwich Roundup Has Learn That The Homes Are Still On Back Up Generator Power

The Greenwich Woods Health Care And Rehabilitation Center on King Street lost power as the storm hit early Sunday, and was still running on generator power two days later.

The generator allows for essential areas, including corridors, medication and therapy rooms, and kitchens to be lit at Greenwich Woods. Patient rooms are still in the dark.

Connecticut Health of Greenwich, another nursing home on King Street, is also using a generator and has similar conditions.

If this situation is not corrected soon there may have to be evacuations of the nursing homes. Some families with power have removed their loved ones temporarily from one of the healthcare facilities.

08/30/11 THE ROADS ARE NOT CLEAR IN GREENWICH: CL&P And Out-Of-State Power Crews Can't Work On Power Lines In The Backcountry And Are On Standby

Backcountry residents who going into their third day without power after Tropical Storm Irene, are shocked to learn that out of town Connecticut Light And Power crews are parked on the side of the road in Greenwich waiting for town DPW and Tree crews to clear roads.

Many out of state crews are complained about waiting for direction from the utility on what do, because they can't get to there assigned power restoration tasks.

First Selectman Peter Tesei, who has criticized CL&P for not providing sufficient manpower for Greenwich, is not allowing the crews that are here, work in an efficient manner.

Instead of belly aching the First Selectman needs to get his emergency management coordinator out in the field to get roads clear. The town has had 36 hours to get the roads clear.

The priority for the First Selectman's needs to be opening the 30 or so roads that still remain closed.

The utility crews that can get through have been working with the town on a list of priorities.

They are restoring power to health care facilities running on generator power and re-energizing sewage pump stations and homes served by sewer pumps in areas where the gravity system doesn't work.

One the Town of Greenwich gets the roads clear, there will be 15 line crews and 15 tree crews from the town and utility dedicated to customer restoration.

Greenwich Emergency Management officials declined to comment further on reports that crews were waiting around for roads to be cleared.

A lot of this is similar to what we experienced after the March 2010 storm.

08/30/11 UPDATE: Connecticut Light And Power Along With Greenwich DWP And Tree Crews Made Some Progress Restoring Power Overnight

There are still about 8,700 households, or 31 percent of CL&P’s 28,000 Greenwich homes and businesses that are still without electricity this morning.

This is down from about 11,000 CL&P customers out on Monday night.

There were more than 13,000 without power on Sunday night, after Tropical Storm Irene swept through Greenwich.

08/31/11 Greenwich Residents Continued To Assess The Damage To Their Homes And Other Personal Property

After 48 Hours of recovery from the tropical storm, floods and strong winds from Hurricane Irene the town is starting to discover how heavy damage the damage is.

A source in the Greenwich Emergency Management office had reported to Greenwich Roundup that there are at least five homes that have sever enough damaged from trees to met FEMA requirements that might qualify them for financial assistance.

There are over 120 Greenwich homes that have sustained flood damage from Irene.

So far there is not a firm number on the number of personal vehicles that were damaged in town.

These numbers are sure to go up dramatically over the next day or so.

08/30/11 Power Is Back On To All Of Greenwich's Public Schools

According to a Greenwich Roundup source in the Greenwich Emergency Management Office at Town Hall electric service has been restored to the last three elementary schools that were in the dark

The International School at Dundee, and North Mianus and Glenville School are up and running.

The first day of school for all students is on Thursday

Power was also restored to some sewage pump stations.

The pump stations, including the big Old Greenwich pump station is now off generator power.

The town was able to take the portable generators at the pump stations and reassign them to other stations.

CLEANING UP AFTER A FLOOD
Flood waters must be assumed to be contaminated with disease bacteria. When sewage treatment plants are flooded they are sometimes forced to pass raw sewage directly into flooded streams and rivers. Additionally, the normal safety separations between private septic systems and wells may be bridged by rising and waning flood waters. These waters may, therefore, carry the germs of a range of sicknesses typified by diarrhea and other communicable diseases. All material that they touch should be either disinfected or discarded.

In the event of a flood…

• If your home or workplace is flooding, turn off basement furnaces and the outside gas valve. Do not handle energized electrical equipment in wet areas. Shut off the electricity. If the area around the fuse box or circuit breaker is wet, stand on a dry board and shut off the power with a dry wooden stick. Do not turn the power back on until the electrical system has been thoroughly checked and repaired.

• Never try to cross a flood area on foot. The water may be unsanitary and any fast running water could sweep you away.

• Wait until flood waters are below basement level before trying to drain or pump the basement.

• After contact with flood waters, always wash your hands with soap and water that has been disinfected before preparing or eating food, after flood clean-up activities, and after handling articles contaminated with flood water.

• Never allow children to play in flood waters. Clean all toys and equipment with a disinfectant or discard them after contamination with flood waters.

• Do not eat any food that may have come into contact with flood water. This includes packaged food items in plastic, paper, cardboard, cloth, and similar containers that may have been water damaged, as well as beverage containers with screw-caps, snap lids, crimped caps (soda bottles), twist caps, flip tops, and home canned foods, as these tops cannot be disinfected appropriately.
• All clothing, curtains, bedding, etc. should be washed with hot, soapy water, and bleached if possible. Furniture and floors may be rinsed with clean water after washing with soap and water; disinfect if possible.

• Never assume that water-damaged structures or ground are stable. Structural elements that have been submerged or subject to rushing flood waters may be unsound. Assume all stairs, floors and roofs are unsafe until inspected and leave immediately if shifting or unusual noises signal a possible collapse.

08/30/11 With Hurricane Irene forcing blood drive cancellations across the East Coast, the Red Cross is in dire need of your help

The American Red Cross is urging immediate Blood Donations
To help ease the shortfall caused by Hurricane Irene
Storm causes blood drive cancellations and loss of more than 1,500 units of blood

Hurricane Irene has affected blood donations along the East Coast at a time when the nation’s blood supply is already low. Since Hurricane Irene began its path along the East Coast, the storm has forced the cancellation of nearly 60 American Red Cross blood drives, resulting in the shortfall of more than 1,500 units of blood and the numbers could increase this week while areas deal with the storm’s aftermath. For those areas not heavily impacted by the storm, the Red Cross is urging immediate blood and platelet donations and asks that community members consider donating blood in affected areas, once it is safe to do so. Blood has a limited shelf life and platelets have a shelf-life of just five days.

“It is imperative that we are always prepared with enough blood on hand to meet the needs of patients,” stated Donna M. Morrissey, Director of Communications, American Red Cross – Northeast Division. We encourage all those who are eligible to help make up the shortfall caused by Hurricane Irene. It’s the blood that is already on the shelves that helps save lives before, during and after a disaster.”

The Red Cross is still working to stabilize the blood supply after our summer shortages and with a holiday weekend approaching, the need continues.

Across the country, blood centers are struggling to keep pace with demand. Nationwide, around 44,000 blood donations are needed each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders. These patients and others rely on blood products during their treatment.

When disaster strikes, this need does not diminish, even though blood donors may find it difficult or impossible to get to a convenient donation opportunity. If collections are negatively impacted by a disaster, the long-term needs of these patients could also be affected.
