Tornado Watch Issued For Fairfield County; Heat On Way For Saturday

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Fairfield County. The alert, which was issued just before 6 p.m. Friday, is in effect until 1 a.m. Saturday.

Republican Congressional Candidate Rick Torres became the first of the three primary contenders to agree to a debate sponsored by News 12 on Friday August 6th at 9:30am. 

The Campaigns are also expected to schedule a debate through the 4th CDRO on either August 1st or August 8th.

07/23/10 Status Report on repairs to the Indian Harbor Ferry

The Indian Harbor Ferry is in its final phase of repair. The boat is
slated to be launched in a sea trial that is scheduled for tomorrow, July
24th. If the ferry is cleared to operate and carry passengers, the boat
will return to Greenwich late tomorrow and will be placed into service on
Sunday, July 25th.

*Please note that the Island Beach Ferry will run on Saturday, July 24th
on the hour leaving the ferry dock. Please visit our website
www.greenwichct.org, click on check out parks and Recreation throughout
the weekend as periodic updates will be made to the "News" section on

the status of the ferry service.

Students' scores 'moving in right direction'

The Connecticut State Department of Education released the results of last March’s standardized test of public school students’ academic performance and for Greenwich, the results are decidedly mixed.

Noting that science is still an area “in need of improvement,” Superintendent of Schools Sidney A. Freund said, “We are moving in the right direction....

...Reading among 10th graders, however, showed a trend away from high achievement.....

...the percentage of 10th graders earning Advanced status slid from a five-year high of 41.2% in 2007 to 33.5% for 2010.....

...The bad news in writing skills included the percentage of third graders scoring Advanced, dropping from 45.9% in 2009 to 38.0% this year, and the percentage of fifth graders scoring Advanced from 42.6% to 39.5% in the same time frame......

....Just under one out of four fifth graders earned Advanced status in science; among eighth graders, only 17% of the class scored in the Advanced category, down from 26.7% last year....

Greenwich High School sophomores made gains in math, science and writing in the Connecticut Academic Performance Test, but saw a dip in reading compared to last year's results.
