SUPERINTENDENT APPOINTS NEW LEBANON SCHOOL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

(For immediate release: Thursday, September 2, 2010 – Greenwich, CT)

Superintendent of Schools Dr. SidneyA. Freund announced this summer the appointment of Mr. Eugene Matejek as the Assistant Principal of NewLebanon School (NLS). Mr. Matejek is a skilled teacher and instructional leader, and he has had extensiveexperience and training in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB-PYP).

He has beenworking with New Lebanon School since they began their exploration into a magnet theme, as a member of theNLS Magnet Committee during the 2007-08 school year. In 2008, the first year of New Lebanon’simplementation of the IB-PYP, he became their Intervention Specialist and IB Coordinator.

He has workedclosely with the staff and families of NLS in planning and executing the implementation of their magnet themeand in developing strategies for addressing the needs of struggling learners.Mr. Matejek began teaching in 1998 at the Meeting House Hill School in New Fairfield, CT and after threeyears came to the Greenwich Public Schools in 2001 as a 3rdGrade Teacher at the International School atDundee (ISD).

In 2008, he moved to New Lebanon School as an Intervention Specialist and IB Coordinator. Asa teacher at ISD, he served as a member of and Chair for the school’s Strategic Improvement Team for threeyears from 2005-2008, led the curriculum committee for an IB Evaluation, and administered workshops onstudent portfolios and student-led conferences.

He has been a sought after participant on District committees,including an initial exploration into the IB Middle Years Programme in 2003-04, the New Lebanon SchoolMagnet Committee and currently, with the Transdisciplinary Units Development Committee. At NLS, Mr.Matejek is a member of the Strategic Improvement Team, an Instructional Data Team and the StudentAssistance Team.

As a School Learning Facilitator, he has planned and coordinated a school-wide CurriculumCarnival, and trained staff on web-based curriculum study programs and SMARTboard technologies. He hasworked closely with the teachers in planning and developing units for the IB-PYP implementation, and intraining staff and presenting to parents on the essential elements of the Primary Years Programme.

Mr. Matejekhas been a BEST (Beginning Educator Support and Training Program) teacher mentor and has also been trainedin the State’s new TEAM program – Teacher Education and Mentoring Program.

Mr. Matejek received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 1997, a Masters of Arts in Teaching in1999, and a Sixth Year degree in Administration in 2009 from Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT
